WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

Oppressed by her family, dead-end school prospects and boys’ rule of her neighbourhood, teenager Marieme (Touré) starts a new life for herself when she meets and befriends a group of three, spirited girls. She ditches school, adopts a new dress code and even changes her name to Vic in order to feel a sense of freedom with her new friends…

IN ONE SENTENCE, WHY SHOULD YOU BE EXCITED?

Please don’t confuse this as being a spin-off of Richard Linklater’s 12-year odyssey Boyhood – rather, Girlhood is a very different story about coming of age and finding acceptance, brilliantly told by French director Céline Sciamma and expertly portrayed by a group of mostly fresh-faced actresses.
