Martin Eden (Marinelli), a working-class sailor, saves a young boy from a beating on the docks, and is invited to the boy’s bourgeois family home. There, he meets the boy’s sister Elena (Cressy), who becomes both the object of Martin’s affections and a symbol of the social status he wishes to achieve. He sets out to become a writer, which is challenged by the obstacles presented by his humble origins, and the growing socialist circle which puts him into direct conflict with Elena and her privileged lifestyle…
