This Week’s Movie Menu (3 – 9 March 2025)

With Oscar season finally behind us (and congratulations to the Anora team for their astonishing victory!), it’s time to look forward to a brand-new week of film releases that could well show back up again at the ceremony next year, including an epic sci-fi caper, a gripping boxing drama, and Danny Dyer at his most Danny Dyer…

Movie of the Week

Mickey 17 (dir. Bong Joon-Ho)

CAST: Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Holliday Grainger, Anamaria Vartolomei, Thomas Turgoose, Angus Imrie, Patsy Ferran, Daniel Henshall, Steve Park, Tim Key

CREW: Bong Joon-Ho (director, writer, producer), Dooho Choi, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner (producers), Jung Jae-Il (composer), Darius Khondji (cinematographer), Jinmo Yang (editor)

PLOT: In the distant future, Mickey Barnes (Pattinson) is eager to escape Earth and depart for a human colony on an alien world, so he signs up to be an “expendable”, a disposable employee who is promptly cloned with his memories intact as soon as he is killed on missions he is not expected to survive. However, things become complicated when “multiples” of Mickey begin popping up…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho follows up his Oscar-winning masterpiece Parasite with a hilarious and darkly commentarial sci-fi epic
  • The South Korean auteur adapts the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, and inserts plenty of his trademark wit and creativity into the adaptation
  • Robert Pattinson is cloned over and over in multiple roles, leading a strong cast that also includes Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo
  • Expect the gritty and often shocking violence of director Bong’s underappreciated 2014 feature Snowpiercer, albeit on an even larger scale than the filmmaker has worked on before
  • Filled with humour, action, and thoughtful plotting, this is a real blockbuster treat for anyone hoping for brains in their regular movie entertainment!

Mickey 17 is showing in cinemas from Friday 7 March 2025

  • It marks the first film in ten years for writer-director Nick Love, who’s best known for British cult classics like The Football Factory, The Business and The Sweeney
  • The trailers are certainly emphasising its heavily NSFW nature – to where the one on this page is via a different player, since YouTube won’t allow us to embed the age-restricted promo!
  • It’s a lairy, sweary and occasionally very hairy misadventure for Dyer’s protagonist as he embarks on a drug-fuelled odyssey unlike any other
  • Dyer-hard fans of the actor will consider this as one of his strongest performances yet, and maybe one of his very best films

  • It is a deeply emotional movie that is certain to put Huston in the league of plenty other actors that have reinvented themselves as soulful filmmakers

  • Her lead, Joana Santos, navigates multiple layers of emotion in a role that allows you to feel her declining emotional state
  • The legendary Ken Loach is an executive producer on the film, guaranteeing a fierce commentary on its standout social issues that are crippling much of this country’s economy
  • Carreira was awarded the Sutherland Prize for Best First Feature at last year’s BFI London Film Festival, an award previously won by the likes of Robert Eggers, Lynne Ramsay and Jean-Luc Godard
  • It’s tough watching, especially if you are similarly trapped within algorithm-centric jobs like the central character is, but it also offers a poignant glimmer of hope for our emotional resilience

  • Some deeply upsetting parallels between the racism of South Africa and that of the United States form a concerning but important backdrop to help explain Cole’s unique legacy
