Maggie (Gerwig), a young and independent New Yorker, decides to inseminate herself with the sperm of an old college acquaintance (Fimmel) in order to become a single mother. However, everything changes when she meets the older and more sophisticated John (Hawke), whose marriage to a woman named Georgette (Moore) is falling apart. Three years later, Maggie and John are married, and have a young daughter together – but Maggie is starting to fall out of love with him, so she devises a new plan: get John back together with Georgette, who seems to be more right for him…
