This Week’s Movie Menu (17 – 23 August 2026)

You’re in for a truly looney time at the movies this week, with the biggest release of the bunch being a wacky legal thriller for the whole family – one that, until fairly recently, almost never saw the light of day…

Movie of the Week

Coyote vs. Acme (dir. Dave Green)

CAST: Will Forte, Lana Condor, John Cena, P.J. Byrne, Tone Bell, Martha Kelly, Luis Guzmán, Eric Bauza

CREW: Dave Green (director), Samy Burch (writer), Christopher DeFaria and James Gunn (producers), Steven Price (composer), Brandon Trost (cinematographer), Carsten Kurpanek (editor)

PLOT: After failing far too many times to catch the Road Runner thanks to the shoddy products of the Acme Corporation, Wile E. Coyote hires down-on-his-luck lawyer Kevin Avery (Forte) to sue the company, only for the unlikely allies to uncover a much larger conspiracy in the process…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The ambitious Looney Tunes epic that almost never was is finally about to make its debut as perhaps the strongest feature-length live-action/animated hybrid movie yet!
  • Originally completed for a 2023 release, the film was unceremoniously written off by Warner Bros for a $30 million tax loss, prompting industry-wide backlash and an online campaign to save the movie from almost certain deletion
  • Luckily, thanks to new distributor Ketchup Entertainment (which has teamed with Altitude for the UK release), audiences will get to see the hilarious and twist-heavy film from director Dave Green and producer James Gunn, who based the film on a satirical New Yorker article by Ian Frazier
  • While the likes of Will Forte and John Cena fill the A-list quota for the film, its real stars are of course a whole bunch of classic Looney Tunes characters, who are brought to life via a unique blend of 3D animation and 2D designs
  • After fighting so long for it to see the light of day, it is our duty as cinephiles and cartoon lovers to head out and support this movie, in effect telling its former place of residence how dumb they were for letting it go in the first place!

Coyote vs. Acme is showing in cinemas from Friday 21 August 2026

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma (dir. Jane Schoenbrun)

CREW: Jane Schoenbrun (director, writer), Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner (producers), Alex G (composer), Eric K. Yue (cinematographer), Graham Mason (editor)

PLOT: Kris (Einbinder), a queer young filmmaker, is hired to direct the next instalment in the long-running Camp Miasma slasher franchise, but when she seeks out original lead actor Billy Presley (Anderson) to cast her in the movie, the two of them wind up together on a vivid psychosexual journey together…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • For their follow-up to the cult hit I Saw the TV Glow, writer-director Jane Schoenbrun has crafted a queer love letter to slasher cinema that carries their signature eccentricity
  • Gillian Anderson and Hacks breakout Hannah Einbinder form dazzling chemistry as an unlikely creative duo navigating the cinematic legacy they have both contributed to
  • It is filled with fascinatingly surreal imagery that shakes the classic slasher formula up to a degree where it becomes fresh and original once more
  • Critics and audiences have raved about the film ever since it debuted in the Un Certain Regard section of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it also walked away with the Queer Palm
  • With classic slasher franchises like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street still in limbo, this playful homage will make you ache even more for new entries in the near(ish) future

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is showing in cinemas from Friday 21 August 2026

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The sixth instalment in the Insidious franchise goes a step further than most and makes the supernatural threat more real than ever before
  • Jacob Chase, previously of the well-received 2020 horror Come Play, directs and writes a chilling new entry with the support of producers Jason Blum, Leigh Whannell and original director James Wan
  • Series regular Lin Shaye reprises her role as the now-deceased psychic Elise Rainier, alongside newer faces like Amelia Eve and Sam Spruell
  • With various demons now set to roam about in the real world, there’s no telling who’s safe and who isn’t from their wrath
  • As often in this series, expect some chilling scares as well as memorable villains who will haunt your nightmares for weeks afterward

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Anyone who’s ever wanted to relax and wind down will find themselves relating hard to the wacky shenanigans of this hilarious new comedy
  • The lead quartet are proven comedic firecrackers, and their winning camaraderie makes the various jokes land much harder

  • It offers so much chaos and energy that you’ll feel as though you need to book a spa trip yourself in order to recover from it all!

Spa Weekend is showing in cinemas from Friday 21 August 2026

Mutiny (dir. Jean-François Richet)

PLOT: Cole Reed (Statham), a former Special Forces militant turned private security guard, is framed for the murder of his boss, and uncovers an international conspiracy whilst attempting to clear his name…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Jason Statham is back to teach more bad guys a violent lesson in this gritty action-thriller that offers everything audiences have come to expect from a Statham movie
  • The action star also produces the film under his new production company, the brilliantly-named Punch Palace Productions
  • It’s directed by Jean-François Richet, who previously directed the Gerard Butler vehicle Plane – and seeing how much of this movie appears to be set at sea, it’s a surprise this one isn’t called Boat!
  • Some of the gnarly action sees Statham lay into villains with everything from hooks to harpoons, almost like it’s another sequel to The Meg!
  • With its engaging plot and, of course, Statham’s reliable screen presence, this is bound to be a late-summer hit for action aficionados

Mutiny is showing in cinemas from Friday 21 August 2026

PLOT: When the luxurious Glamazonian Express train runs into danger during a massive storm, stewardesses Tess (Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee) must team with US President Judy Gagwell (Charles) to prevent a major disaster…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The spirit of classic Zucker-Abrahams-Zuckers spoof comedies like Airplane! and The Naked Gun remains alive in this hilarious new farce with a delightfully campy modern twist
  • Some of the most iconic faces from RuPaul’s Drag Race play major roles in the film, from Ginger Minj to Symone to RuPaul himself, the latter playing the President of the United States
  • Other recognisable comedic faces in director Adam Shankman’s film include Rachel Bloom, Chris Parnell, Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and even Sarah Michelle Gellar as a fictional version of herself
  • Wackiness is everywhere as the comedy goes to some unexpected and often cartoonish areas that make the physical slapstick and quick visual gags land even harder
  • Anyone wanting a good hearty laugh at the movies will find plenty to mindlessly giggle over in a film that has no other mission than to make its audience chuckle – and does so with pride!

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This sardonic comedy-drama flirts with surprising and sometimes dark themes while delivering an engrossing family spectacle at the same time
  • Oscar-nominee Bill Nighy leads a stellar ensemble cast that also includes George MacKay, Johnny Flynn, Hamnet star Noah Jupe and fellow Oscar-nominated actor Imelda Staunton
  • Sarah Polley, who won an Oscar for writing the screenplay for Women Talking, adapts David Gilbert’s novel of the same name with co-writer and director Pablo Trapero
  • The secret that Nighy’s deeply complex protagonist has to impart paves the way for some intricate and thoughtful commentary on the fragile definition of family as well as the legacy parents leave for their kids
  • It’s a whip-smart, funny and devastating film that brings out the best in each and every person involved, whether in front of or behind the camera
