WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

During the American Civil War, disillusioned Confederate soldier Newton Knight (McConaughey) deserts the battlefield and returns to his home in Jones County, Mississippi. There, he unites an unlikely band of poor farmers, runaway slaves, and growing amounts of Southern deserters in a revolt against the Confederate State Army, which would lead to Jones County eventually seceding from the Confederacy to become a Free State of Jones…
