This Week’s Movie Menu (11 – 17 August 2025)

Fall in love with an all-new set of film releases coming your way this week, including a thoughtful new rom-com, a disturbing body horror about co-dependent relationships, and even a little puppy love…

Movie of the Week

Materialists (dir. Celine Song)

CAST: Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, Zoë Winters, Marin Ireland, Dasha Nekrasova, Louisa Jacobson, Sawyer Spielberg, Eddie Cahill, Joseph Lee, John Magaro, Baby Rose

CREW: Celine Song (director, writer, producer), David Hinojosa, Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon (producers), Daniel Pemberton (composer), Shabier Kirchner (cinematographer), Keith Fraase (editor)

PLOT: Lucy (Johnson) is a successful matchmaker who, despite her strong track record, refuses to settle for a match of her own, but that changes when she finds herself torn between the wealthy Harry (Pascal) and her ex-boyfriend John (Evans)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Filmmaker Celine Song follows up her Oscar-nominated debut Past Lives with a seemingly conventional romantic-comedy with much more going on underneath the surface
  • Dakota Johnson is on top form as she appears opposite the equally charming pair of Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal
  • Song was reportedly inspired to make the film after working for a professional matchmaking service over a six-month period, proving that she knows full well how this particular world works
  • While there are plenty of pleasing moments that fall directly into the rom-com template, there are also some contemplative and mature parts that offer something profound and insightful to the viewer
  • It’s bound to give anyone a whole new outlook on the complications of dating in the modern world, while also being thoroughly entranced by Song’s masterful approach

Materialists is showing in cinemas from Wednesday 13 August 2025

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

Together (dir. Michael Shanks)

CAST: Dave Franco, Alison Brie, Damon Herriman, Mia Morrissey, Jack Kenny, Sunny S. Walia, Karl Richmond, Charlie Lees, MJ Dorning, Tom Considine, Melanie Beddie, Sarah Lang, Rob Brown

CREW: Michael Shanks (director, writer), Alison Brie, Mike Cowap, Erik Feig, Dave Franco, Julia Hammer, Tim Headington, Andrew Mittman and Max Silva (producers), Cornel Wilczek (composer), Germain McMicking (cinematographer), Sean Lahiff (editor)

PLOT: Tim (Franco) and Millie (Brie), a couple who are years into their relationship, reach a crossroads in their lives when they decide to move to a remote home in the countryside, only to find themselves up against a mysterious force that is causing some disturbing changes to their bodies…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • In the wake of The Substance comes a fresh new body horror that is both shocking and painfully relatable
  • Dave Franco and Alison Brie – who are married in real life – are eerily good at playing a couple going through a complex range of emotions concerning their fluctuating relationship, something made even trickier by what ends up happening to them!
  • Debut filmmaker Michael Shanks employs some impressive practical effects for scenes where the two leads become intertwined in very unexpected ways
  • It’s already proving to be a hit with critics, having (until recently) retained a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes since its world premiere at this year’s Sundance back in January
  • You’ll be grossed out, laughing uncomfortably, and worrying about the seemingly stable connections in your own life whilst witnessing the madness of this movie

Together is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 August 2025

Nobody 2 (dir. Timo Tjahjanto)

CAST: Bob Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen, John Ortiz, RZA, Colin Hanks, Christopher Lloyd, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Colin Salmon, Billy MacLellan, Gage Munroe, Paisley Cadorath, Daniel Maclnnis, Cindy Myskiw, Zara Longe, Nolan Grantham, Pyper Braun

CREW: Timo Tjahjanto (director), Bob Odenkirk (writer, producer), Umair Aleem, Derek Kolstad and Aaron Rabin (writers), Braden Aftergood, David Leitch, Kely McCormick and Marc Provissiero (producers), Dominic Lewis (composer), Callan Green (cinematographer), Elísabet Ronaldsdóttir (editor)

PLOT: Hutch Mansell (Odenkirk), a former assassin turned suburban family man, takes his wife Becca (Nielsen) and their children Brady (Munroe) and Sammy (Cadorath) to a small tourist town for a much-needed holiday, but a run-in with local bullies puts Hutch and his family in the crosshairs of corrupt theme park owner Henry (Ortiz) and local crime boss Lendina (Stone)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Bob Odenkirk is back in ass-kicking mode in this sequel to the hit action-comedy from the makers of John Wick
  • This time, Odenkirk’s mild-mannered former hitman Hutch is trying to relax in the sunshine when he’s inevitably drawn into even more explosive mayhem
  • There’s plenty more for co-stars Connie Nielsen and Christopher Lloyd to do here, as well as newcomers John Ortiz, Colin Hanks and screen legend Sharon Stone
  • With David Leich producing, expect lots more of that thrilling stunt work mixed with bombastic moments of slapstick
  • Sequels to hit action-comedies can be hit-or-miss, but this one looks to retain the same level of brutal violence and hilarious pick-black humour as the original film, so we could be in safe hands!

Nobody 2 is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 August 2025

Super Charlie (dir. Jon Holmberg)

CAST: Orlando Wahlsteen, Silas Strand, Sven Björklund, Ulla Skoog, Tuva Novotny, Johan Rödin, Lily Wahlsteen, Joakim Jennefors, Annie Lundin, Joakim Sikberg

PLOT: Willie (Wahlsteen), a ten-year-old boy with dreams of becoming a superhero, is dismayed when his baby brother Charlie (Strand) is born with actual superpowers, but the brothers must put aside their differences when evil forces threaten their world…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The best-selling children’s book series by Swedish crime author Camilla Läckberg is brought to life in this fun animated adventure for the whole family
  • Young kids, especially those dealing with younger siblings, will relate to the struggles of its main characters and their increasingly childish (for lack of a better phrase) sibling rivalry
  • There is also plenty of energetic superhero action to please anyone who enjoyed last month’s double whammy of Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps
  • It touches upon juvenile perspectives in similar but ultimately unique ways to Dan Pilkey’s work, such as Captain Underpants and Dog Man (both of which have also been turned into animated delights)
  • With colourful animation and hilarious gags that anyone of any age can giggle at, this is a charming and feel-good experience that is perfect early summer viewing for families

Super Charlie is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 August 2025

Unmoored (dir. Caroline Ingvarsson)

CAST: Mirja Turestedt, Thomas W. Gabrielsson, Kris Hitchen, Anna Próchniak, Marta Zmuda Trzebiatowska, Andrzej Konopka, Sven Ahlström

CREW: Caroline Ingvarsson (director), Michele Marshall (writer, producer), Naomi Despres and Mariusz Wlodarski (producers), Martin Dirkov (composer), Michal Dymek (cinematographer), Agata Cierniak (editor)

PLOT: Maria (Tuestedt), a successful Swedish TV presenter, heads on sabbatical with her husband Magnus (Gabrielsson) after he is accused of serious misconduct, but when she finally confronts him about it, she begins heading down a dark and paranoid path…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • A gripping tale of paranoia and uncertainty awaits you in this dark psychological thriller that tackles some difficult topics
  • It is the directorial debut of Swedish director Caroline Ingvarsson, who brings to life an unpredictable script by Michele Marshall that is adapted from Håkan Nesser’s novel
  • Lead actor Mirja Turestedt is endlessly compelling as someone drawn into a disturbing set of mind during the midst of #MeToo inspired personal controversy
  • The English moors provide a mysterious backdrop for the mysterious narrative, which has previously shown at festival around the world including London
  • You’ll feel your heart racing as the story reaches a definitive conclusion with plenty of shocks and surprises up its sleeve

Unmoored is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 August 2025

Bambi: A Tale of Life in the Woods (dir. Michel Fessler)

CAST: Mylène Farmer

CREW: Michel Fessler (director, writer), Jean-Pierre Bailly, Reginald de Guillebon, Marion Delord and Stéphane Millière (producers), Laurent Perez Del Mar (composer), Daniel Meyer (cinematographer), Laurence Buchmann (editor)

PLOT: A young deer named Bambi is born in the forest, where he learns to survive, makes friends, experiences profound loss, and learns valuable life lessons…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The timeless book by Felix Salten – famously adapted by Disney – is brought to the screen like never before in a pleasing readaptation for the whole family
  • It uses real footage of woodland animals as the characters, with actor Mylène Farmer providing necessary voiceover to tell the story
  • Director Michel Fessler, who previously co-wrote the Oscar-winning documentary phenomenon March of the Penguins, utilises striking nature cinematography to visually convey each part of the narrative
  • Bring plenty of tissues, as the film also covers perhaps the most emotionally traumatising part of the whole story!
  • For families looking for an all-new interpretation of the original novel, this is as close as we’ll yet get to a Disney live-action remake without it actually being from Disney!

Bambi: A Tale of Life in the Woods is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 August 2025

Motherboard (dir. Victoria Mapplebeck)

CAST: Victoria Mapplebeck, Jim Mapplebeck

CREW: Victoria Mapplebeck (director, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor), Ed Seed and Jamie Perera (composers), Oli Bauer (editor)

PLOT: After finding herself single, broke and pregnant at the age of 38, Victoria Mapplebeck is forced to give up her career as a TV director in order to take care of her son Jim, and over the following twenty years she captures their lives together…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This unique time-capsule documentary celebrates the unsung heroes of single parenthood and the children they sacrifice everything to raise
  • Victoria Mapplebeck compiled the film from hundreds of hours of footage across two decades, charting from her very first pregnancy scan to her son Jim’s first day at college
  • She captures intimate details of her and Jim’s life, including adolescent fights and tender moments of closeness that signify their bond
  • There’s an argument to be made that this could go hand in hand with Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, with both charting a realistic literal growth in its young main subject and the people around him
  • Anyone who’s ever found themselves raising a child alone will no doubt feel the emotion pouring out of them as they witness a fellow parent doing the bare minimum under extraordinary circumstances

Motherboard is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 August 2025

War 2 (dir. Ayan Mukerji)

CAST: Hrithik Roshan, N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Kiara Advani, Ashutosh Rana, Anil Kapoor

PLOT: After secret agent Kabir Dhaliwal (Roshan) goes rogue, his spy agency sends lethal Special Units Officer Vikram (Rao Jr.) to go after him…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • India’s hugely popular YRF Spy Universe expands even further with a bombastic new entry
  • A sequel to the 2019 film War, and the sixth overall instalment, the film also sees the return of leading man Hrithik Roshan as the anti-heroic Kabir
  • Scenes were shot globally, including in Spain, Italy and Abu Dhabi as well as Mumbai
  • Accompanying the high-octane action sequences is a lively musical score, partially composed by prolific Bollywood songwriter Pritam Chakraborty
  • Fans of the franchise will enjoy seeing plenty of the explosive espionage action that has become its signature style

War 2 is showing in cinemas from Thursday 14 August 2025

Oslo Stories Trilogy: Love (dir. Dag Johan Haugerud)

CAST: Andrea Bræin Hovig, Tayo Cittadella Jacobsen, Thomas Gullestad, Lars Jacob Holm, Marte Engebrigtsen, Marian Saastad Ottesen, Morten Svartveit

CREW: Dag Johan Haugerud (director, writer), Hege Hauff Hvattum and Yngve Sæther (producers), Peder Capjon Kjellsby (composer), Cecilie Semec (cinematographer), Jens Christian Fodstad (editor)

PLOT: Marianne (Hovig), a doctor, and Tor (Jacobsen), a nurse, strike up a conversation whilst on a ferry together outside of work, where they discuss casual approaches to love and sexual relationships which they attempt to apply to their own lives…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The second part of Norwegian filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud’s trilogy of standalone films explores an intimate side of human connection
  • As with the previous film Dreams (released a couple of weeks ago), it adopts nonjudgemental attitudes toward casual encounters that are treated with care and respect by the writer-director
  • Leads Andrea Bræin Hovig and Tayo Cittadella Jacobsen give a pair of tender performances that allow you to see the vulnerable but relatable sides of their characters
  • It competed for the Golden Lion at last year’s Venice Film Festival, where it faced off against movies by Luca Guadagnino, Brady Corbet and eventual winner Pedro Almodóvar
  • Make sure you see it before next week brings about the final film in the trilogy, which given that it’s called Sex suggests an even raunchier, but no less intimate, finale!

Oslo Stories Trilogy: Love is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 August 2025

  • The raunchy comedy incorporates Tartakovsky’s signature style into a hilarious and surprisingly mature narrative filled with colourful and very inappropriate canine characters
  • Said characters are voiced by a starry line-up including Pitch Perfect’s Adam DeVine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn and SNL veterans Fred Armisen, Bobby Moynihan and Beck Bennett

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This intense crime thriller is a gripping late-summer watch that will have you clenching every single one of your muscles with trepidation
  • Vanessa Kirby, currently illuminating the big screen as Sue Storm in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, is on fiery form under the direction of Benjamin Caron, previously of Apple’s twisty con artist thriller Sharper
  • Throughout the one-night narrative, she encounters plenty of seedy and intimidating figures played by the likes of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Randall Park, Michael Kelly and even filmmaker Eli Roth
  • Underneath the brooding intensity is a heartfelt family drama as Kirby’s anti-hero does whatever she can for her family, represented by the fabulous Zach Gottsagen of The Peanut Butter Falcon fame
  • Fans of similar pressure-cooker thrillers like Uncut Gems and Martin Scorsese’s After Hours will greatly enjoy the stressful chaos that goes on in this movie too
