This Week’s Movie Menu (25 – 31 May 2026)

Get lost in a freakishly good week of new film releases, including a terrifying cinematic version of an online phenomenon, a literal battle of the bands, a fantastical airplane journey, and the return of a bubbly law student…

Movie of the Week

Backrooms (dir. Kane Parsons)

CAST: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, Avan Jogia

CREW: Kane Parsons (director, composer), Will Soodik (writer), Kori Adelson, Peter Chernin, Michael Clear, Dan Cohen, Chris Ferguson, Dan Levine, Shawn Levy, Roberto Patino, Osgood Perkins, Jenno Topping and James Wan (producers), Edo Van Breemen (composer), Jeremy Cox (cinematographer), Greg Ng (editor)

PLOT: When a strange doorway leading to an otherworldly dimension appears in the basement of a furniture showroom, manager Clark (Ejiofor) leads an expedition into its terrifying depths…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The creepypasta sensation that inspired YouTuber Kane Parsons’ viral web series is transformed into a high-calibre horror from studio and distributor A24
  • Parsons also directs the film, making him the youngest filmmaker in A24’s history at only 20 years old
  • He’s fortunate enough to have Oscar-nominated powerhouses Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve in front of the camera, as well as the likes of Shawn Levy, Osgood Perkins and James Wan as producers
  • Fans can expect the genuinely unnerving atmosphere and imagery of the web series to be faithfully replicated with some seriously scary upgrades
  • It’s further proof, along with the recent Obsession, Iron Lung and Shelby Oaks, that the next generation of horror filmmakers lies among the realms of YouTube

Backrooms is showing in cinemas from Friday 29 May 2026

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

PLOT: Rick (Rudd), a washed-up wedding singer, has a chance encounter with fading pop star Danny Wilson (Jonas), only to later find that one of his songs has been transformed into a career-reigniting hit for the latter, causing him to seek the recognition he believes that he deserves…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Filmmaker John Carney, previously of Once and Sing Street, returns to the big screen with a delightful new crowd-pleaser that once again reiterates the power of music
  • Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas engage in a fierce on-screen battle of musical integrity while preserving their genuine charm and natural likeability
  • The plot is largely inspired by a real-life dispute between music icon Robbie Williams and Irish songwriter Ray Heffernan, who claims that he co-wrote Williams’s legendary track “Angels”
  • Many of the original songs featured in this film will go right alongside some of the other memorable tracks from Carney’s previous work, including Once’s Oscar-winning “Falling Slowly”
  • With plenty of humour to match its heart, this is a musically-intwined comedy-drama that will have you do more than tap your toes along to it

Power Ballad is showing in cinemas from Friday 29 May 2026

Tuner (dir. Daniel Roher)

CAST: Leo Woodall, Dustin Hoffman, Havana Rose Liu, Jean Reno, Lior Raz, Tovah Feldshuh, Nissan Sakira, Gil Cohen, C.S. Lee, Rek Lee, Ari Cohen Mann

CREW: Daniel Roher (director, writer), Robert Ramsey (writer), Michael Heimler, Teddy Schwartzman, JoAnne Sellar and Lila Yacoub (producers), Will Bates (composer), Lowell A. Meyer (cinematographer), Greg O’Bryant (editor)

PLOT: Niki (Woodall) is a gifted young piano tuner with a sharpened sensitivity toward sound who begins an unlikely criminal career as a safecracker…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This enjoyable crime caper lends an ear to an all-new kind of outlaw while providing plenty of heart and dark humour
  • Daniel Roher, who previously made the Oscar-winning documentary Navalny, makes his narrative feature debut by directing and co-writing with Intolerable Cruelty screenwriter Robert Ramsey
  • The cast includes bright up-and-comers like Leo Woodall and Havana Rose Liu, as well as screen legends like Jean Reno and Oscar-winner Dustin Hoffman
  • You’ll constantly be on the edge of your seat as the protagonist and his all too sharp hearing gets into some rather intense situations
  • With strong potential to be a sure-fire audience hit, the film provides nearly everything that audiences are looking for in movies nowadays

Tuner is showing in cinemas from Friday 29 May 2026

My Mother’s Wedding (dir. Kristin Scott Thomas)

CAST: Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham, Kristin Scott Thomas, Freida Pinto, Thibault de Montalembert, Joshua McGuire, Mark Stanley, Samson Kayo, James Fleet, Roger Ashton-Griffiths, Ian Dunnett Jnr

CREW: Kristin Scott Thomas (director, writer), John Micklethwait (writer), Finola Dwyer and Steven Rales (producers), Rolfe Kent (composer), Yves Bélanger (cinematographer), Joan Sobel (editor)

PLOT: Katherine (Johansson), Victoria (Miller) and Georgina (Beecham) are sisters who return to their family home for the wedding of their twice-widowed mother Diana (Thomas), where they must deal with their shared issues…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Oscar-nominee and BAFTA-winner Kristin Scott Thomas makes the leap into directing with a feature debut that will warm the soul
  • In addition to playing the titular mother, she’s also recruited A-list royalty Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller and Emily Beecham as her on-screen daughters
  • Thomas, who also co-wrote the script, based the story loosely on her own childhood memories, making it something of a personal project for the actor-turned-filmmaker
  • It breathes the same light air that a classic Richard Curtis rom-com once did, particularly Four Weddings and a Funeral which Thomas of course starred in
  • Viewers will be delighted to see a messy but still pleasant mother-daughter(s) dynamic work so well on the big screen

My Mother’s Wedding is showing in cinemas from Friday 29 May 2026

Moss & Freud (dir. James Lucas)

CAST: Ellie Bamber, Derek Jacobi, Jasmine Blackborow, Tim Downie, Will Tudor

CREW: James Lucas (director, writer), Maile Daugherty and Matthew Metcalfe (producers), Karl Sölve Steven (composer), Maria Ines Manchego (cinematographer), Nick Carew (editor)

PLOT: In 2002, supermodel Kate Moss (Bamber) embarks on a journey of self-discovery when acclaimed artist Lucian Freud (Jacobi) offers to paint her portrait…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • An unlikely bond between two very different types of artists forms the heart of this provocative drama
  • Ellie Bamber delivers a spot-on Kate Moss opposite the legendary Derek Jacobi as painter Lucian Freud
  • It marks the feature debut of writer-director James Lucas, who won an Oscar for writing the screenplay of the short film The Phone Call
  • Lucas tackles the intricate and deeply complex world of art through the perspective of two figures who represent starkly different artistic eras
  • With its hard-hitting portrayal of an industry that is always changing by the day, the film is a tough but necessary watch for any budding artist or model out there

Moss & Freud is showing in cinemas from Friday 29 May 2026

Fairyland (dir. Andrew Durham)

CAST: Emilia Jones, Scoot McNairy, Geena Davis, Cody Fern, Maria Bakalova, Adam Lambert, Bella Murphy, Ryan Thurston, Nessa Dougherty

CREW: Andrew Durham (director, writer, producer), Megan Carlson, Sofia Coppola, Greg Lauritano, Siena Oberman and Laure Sudreau (producers), Michael Penn (composer), Greta Zozula (cinematographer), Peter Cabada Hagan and Lawrence Klein (editors)

PLOT: In 1973, young Alysia Abbott (Dougherty) moves to San Francisco where her gay father Steve (McNairy) can live out his bohemian lifestyle, but years later Alysia (Jones) finds herself confronting her childhood in surprising ways…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This powerful coming-of-age story explores an era of LGBTQ+ pride that comes with its fair share of highs and lows
  • It is an adaptation of Alysia Abbott’s memoir that sees BAFTA-nominee Emilia Jones play a slightly older version of her childhood self, played by formidable young actor Nessa Dougherty
  • The supporting cast features heavy-hitters like Scoot McNairy, Oscar-winner Geena Davis, Borat breakout Maria Bakalova and even current Queen collaborator Adam Lambert
  • Sofia Coppola is a producer through her father Francis Ford Coppola’s American Zoetrope production company, and rest assured it’s a far more accomplished project than Zoetrope’s last film Megalopolis!
  • It’s a film that will move you to tears, on occasion make you laugh until there are tears, but always has its heart in the right place

Fairyland is showing in cinemas from Friday 29 May 2026

Leonora in the Morning Light (dirs. Thor Kelin and Lena Vurma)

CAST: Olivia Vinall, Alexander Scheer, Cassandra Ciangherotti, Ryan Gage, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Mercedes Bahleda, Denis Eyriey, Cat Jugravu, Wren Stembridge, István Téglás

CREW: Lena Vurma (director, writer, producer), Thor Klein (director, writer), Mónica Moreno Bayard, Carolina Pérez Costamagna, James Heath and Alejandra Malvido (producers), Mariá Portugal (composer), Tudor Vladimir Panduru (cinematographer), Matthieu Taponier (editor)

PLOT: In 1930s France, surrealist artist Leonora Carrington (Vinall) forges a rocky relationship with German painter Max Ernst (Scheer) as the threat of European war looms, while in 1950s Mexico her past experiences help to cement her own artistic voice…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This biopic about Leonora Carrington, an icon within the world of surreal art, focuses on two pivotal moments in the artist’s life and career
  • Directors and writers Thor Kelin and Lena Vurma adapt Elena Poniatowska’s novel into a compelling character study that brings the viewer directly inside her absurdist mind
  • Belgian actor Olivia Vinall is a striking presence as the titular surrealist, especially in scenes where she holds her own against prominent art figures like Salvador Dalí and Dadaist pioneer Max Ernst
  • The filmmakers got some serious help from Poniatowska, who was a close friend of Carrington and was able to advise on certain details to make this as accurate a representation as possible
  • It’s a gorgeous film filled with romance, mystery, and of course plenty of strange art that people are still debating to this day

Leonora in the Morning Light is showing in cinemas from Friday 29 May 2026

What’s Showing At Home This Week?

PLOT: During the golden age of aviation, young airplane enthusiast Jeff (Shotwell) has a life-changing journey during a one-way flight to Hollywood with his mother (Eviston-Quinnett)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Hollywood icon John Travolta makes his directorial debut with a deeply personal passion project intended for dreamers of all ages
  • Travolta directs, writes and produces the adaptation of his own 1997 children’s novel, which plays into the actor’s own lifelong fascination with aviation
  • The first-time filmmaker makes surprising use of the limited space among this aircraft, where some unexpected events illuminate the viewing experience
  • It offers a vibrant and charming sense of imagination that will surely inspire a new generation of plane enthusiasts
  • Hopefully it’ll go over better than the last time Travolta spearheaded a major passion project, that being the infamous 2000 sci-fi bomb Battlefield Earth!

What’s Returning to Cinemas This Week?

PLOT: After being dumped by her affluent boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Davis), sorority girl Elle Woods (Witherspoon) decides to enrol at Harvard Law School in order to win him back, but ends up discovering her unlikely talents as a lawyer…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The empowering feminist classic is bending and snapping its way back into cinemas for its 25th anniversary
  • Reese Witherspoon solidified her A-list status with her iconic performance as Elle Woods, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination
  • An adaptation of Amanda Brown’s novel, the film quickly became a hit among audiences after grossing over $100 million against its $18 million budget
  • The film’s legacy has inspired a (less successful) sequel in 2003, a stage musical, and a prequel series set to debut later this year on Prime Video
  • With its fresh mix of light comedy and intricate courtroom drama, it remains a winning crowd-pleaser to this very day

Legally Blonde is showing in cinemas from Friday 29 May 2026

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (dir. Céline Sciamma)

CAST: Noémie Merlant, Adèle Haenel, Luàna Bajrami, Valeria Golino, Christel Baras, Armande Boulanger

CREW: Céline Sciamma (director, writer), Bénédicte Couvreur (producer), Para One and Arthur Simonini (composers), Claire Mathon (cinematographer), Julien Lacheray (editor)

PLOT: In late 18th century Brittany, artist Marianne (Merlant) is commissioned to secretly paint a portrait of young noblewoman Héloïse (Haenel) who has previously refused to pose, but things become complicated as their initial connection grows into something more passionate…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • French auteur Céline Sciamma’s dazzling romantic drama is reignited on the big screen with a special 4K reissue
  • The film’s critical acclaim helped push Sciamma and lead actors Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel into the international spotlight
  • It competed for the Palme D’Or at the 2019 edition of the Cannes Film Festival, and came away with the prize for Best Screenplay as well as the Queer Palm
  • UK audiences didn’t get much of a chance to catch this movie in its intended format, for it originally debuted just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic forced cinemas to close
  • If you indeed missed that opportunity back in early 2020, this re-release will be an excellent way to get you back up to speed!

Portrait of a Lady on Fire is showing in cinemas from Friday 29 May 2026

Bullet in the Head (dir. John Woo)

CAST: Tony Leung, Jacky Cheung, Waise Lee, Simon Yam, Fennie Yuen, Yolinda Yam, Shek Yun Lau, Chung Lin, Paw Hee-ching, Soh Hang-suen, Kan-wing Tsang, Chang Tseng, Kwong Lam Tsui, John Woo

PLOT: In 1967 Hong Kong, childhood friends Ben (Leung), Frank (Cheung) and Paul (Lee) are gang members who flee to Vietnam after an attack goes wrong, where their friendship is tested after getting involved in a smuggling scheme…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Celebrate the 80th birthday of legendary action filmmaker John Woo by revisiting one of his most acclaimed features
  • Woo funded the production almost entirely out of his own pocket, after having difficulty securing financing after his professional break-up with influential producer Tsui Hark
  • The film incorporates elements of action, crime, war and melodrama genres into a singular experience that has been likened to Apocalypse Now by Woo himself (at least, in the sense of its chaotic shoot)
  • While Hong Kong critics were initially soft on the film, international viewers have labelled the film as one of the best action movies ever made
  • Along with Woo’s other genre classics, it’s a mesmerising watch that will surely inspire an all-new wave of action filmmakers
