This Week’s Movie Menu (11 – 17 May 2026)

If you wished for a normal new week of film releases, then you’re out of luck as there’s some truly extraordinary movies coming to your screens instead, including an action-packed caper in a small snowy town, a creepy cautionary tale, and some classic big-screen adventures from our childhoods…

Movie of the Week

Normal (dir. Ben Wheatley)

CAST: Bob Odenkirk, Henry Winkler, Lena Headey, Reena Jolly, Ryan Allen, Billy MacLellan, Brendan Fletcher, Peter Shinkoda, Jess McLeod

CREW: Ben Wheatley (director), Derek Kolstad (writer, producer), Bob Odenkirk and Marc Provissiero (producers), Harry Gregson-Williams and Ryder McNair (composers), Armando Salas (cinematographer), Jonathan Amos (editor)

PLOT: Ulysses (Odenkirk) arrives in the snowy and seemingly friendly town of Normal, Minnesota to temporarily fill the role of sheriff, but after responding to a bank robbery he uncovers plenty of dark secrets about the town and its residents, forcing him into a brutal battle for survival…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Bob Odenkirk continues his trajectory as an unlikely action movie hero in director Ben Wheatley’s balls-to-the-wall crime thriller
  • Odenkirk also reunites with John Wick screenwriter Derek Kolstad, who also wrote his previous action vehicle Nobody (as well as last year’s surprisingly strong sequel)
  • TV legend Henry Winkler is one of many notable supporting faces playing the numerous residents of the titular town, many of whom may or may not be hiding some rather unpredictable surprises
  • Expect plenty of gunfire, hand-to-hand combat and even a little Yakuza swordplay as Wheatley embraces the action-filled chaos
  • Imagine if Fargo also took place in the same universe as Hot Fuzz, and you’ve more or less got an idea of the hugely entertaining ride you’re in for!

Normal is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 May 2026

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

Obsession (dir. Curry Barker)

CAST: Michael Johnston, Inde Navarrette, Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, Andy Richter, Haley Fitzgerald, Darin Toonder, Chloe Breen, Anthony Pavone, Justice, Malcolm Kelner, Anthony Casabianca

CREW: Curry Barker (director, writer, editor), James Harris, Haley Nicole Johnson and Christian Mercuri (producers), Rock Burwell (composer), Taylor Clemons (cinematographer)

PLOT: Bear (Johnson) is smitten with his childhood friend Nikki (Navarrette) but lacks the courage to reveal his feelings to her, so he ends up breaking a mysterious “One Wish Willow” with the wish that Nikki would fall madly in love with him – and he gets his wish, but with a dark emphasis on “madly”…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The horror event of the (early) summer is a creepy and unnerving cautionary tale about being careful with what you wish for
  • It’s the mainstream filmmaking debut of Curry Barker, best known as one-half of YouTube sketch comedy duo That’s a Bad Idea and who previously directed the viral found-footage horror Milk & Serial
  • Barker’s original script takes the concept of wish fulfilment and, with a terrifying central turn by Inde Navarrette, transforms it into a genuinely creepy stalker thriller
  • The film won widespread acclaim at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where it became the first runner-up of the festival’s People’s Choice Award for its Midnight Madness section
  • It will haunt your nightmares for weeks to come as you witness the scary consequences of a seemingly harmless wish

Obsession is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 May 2026

The Christophers (dir. Steven Soderbergh)

CAST: Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, James Corden, Jessica Gunning, Tilly Botsford, Ferdy Roberts, Lucy McCormick, Le Fil

CREW: Steven Soderbergh (director, cinematographer, editor), Ed Solomon (writer), Iain Canning and Jim Parks (producers), David Holmes (composer)

PLOT: Julian Sklar (McKellen) is an aging London artist who now lives as a recluse, until his estranged adult children Barnaby (Corden) and Sallie (Gunning) hire aspiring painter Lori (Coel) to pose as his new prospective assistant in order to gain access to a series of Julian’s unfinished paintings, which they hope to forge and sell for their own profit…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Steven Soderbergh’s second London-set caper in a row, after last year’s excellent spy thriller Black Bag, is a much lighter but still gripping outing for the Oscar-winning filmmaker
  • The one and only Sir Ian McKellen headlines the film, appearing alongside Emmy and BAFTA-winner Michaela Coel with James Corden and Baby Reindeer breakout Jessica Gunning offering devious support
  • It features a wonderfully witty script by Ed Solomon, the writer behind Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Men in Black, and Soderbergh’s previous crime thriller No Sudden Move
  • The film is a lovely character-centric piece that shows a genuinely sweet bond between McKellen and Coel as their differing worldviews align with one another
  • For Soderbergh, it represents yet another self-reinvention in a career made up of experimental indies and crowd-pleasing blockbusters

The Christophers is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 May 2026

Orphan (dir. László Nemes)

CAST: Bojtorján Barabas, Grégory Gadebois, Andrea Waskovics, Hermina Fátyol, Elíz Szabó, Soma Sándor

CREW: László Nemes (director, writer), Clara Royer (writer), Mike Goodridge, Gregory Jankilevitsch, Ildikó Kemény, Alexander Rodnyansky and Ferenc Szále (producers), Evgueni Galperine and Sacha Galperine (composers), Mátyás Erdély (cinematographer), Péter Politzer (editor)

PLOT: In 1957 Budapest, 12-year-old Andor (Barabas) searches for answers about his father who went missing during the Second World War…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • László Nemes, the Hungarian filmmaker behind the Oscar-winning war drama Son of Saul, is back with a powerfully understated slice of local history
  • The director and co-writer takes viewers back in time to post-war Hungary, when the country and its civilians were facing violently suppression by Soviet forces
  • The youthful perspective, as brought to life by tremendous young lead Bojtorján Barabas, adds a slight sense of innocence to a world filled with growing cynicism
  • It offers some beautiful visuals that have been captured on 35mm film, giving it a grainy and archaic visual aesthetic
  • Viewers will be intellectually engaged as they witness a valuable history lesson that feels awfully relevant in today’s world

Orphan is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 May 2026

Northern Soul: Still Burning (dir. Alan Byron)

PLOT: A study of the legacy of underground music movement of Northern Soul which popularised numerous discarded Black soul artists from the US throughout various UK clubs, including the infamous Wigan Casino…

  • One of the UK’s most iconic subcultures has its legacy examined in a celebratory new documentary that will get your heart pumping and your feet stomping
  • It is a follow-up to filmmaker Alan Byron’s 2012 film Keep on Burning: The Story of Northern Soul, with this one taking a deeper look at the movement and its lasting cultural impact
  • Numerous figures from that world are interviewed, including radio DJ Tony Blackburn and club owners like Russ Winstanley, the founder of the legendary Wigan Casino
  • Rare archival footage has also been restored to implant viewers directly into the music scene itself, giving them full access to the very height of its popularity
  • Nostalgic music lovers will enjoy revisiting a joyous time when forgotten artists found their audience and communities could come together with their shared love of song and dance

Northern Soul: Still Burning is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 May 2026

Queer as Punk (dir. Yihwen Chen)

CAST: Faris Saad (aka Faris), Khairunnisa Mohd Nasir (aka Yon), Nurul Shuhadah Mohamed (aka Yoyo)

CREW: Yihwen Chen (director, producer, cinematographer, editor), Angen Sodo (editor)

PLOT: In Malaysia, the members of LGBTQ+ punk band Shh…Diam! set out to challenge the country’s anti-queer policies…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • One of the most outspoken queer punk bands in the world becomes the focus of a powerful new documentary
  • All three members of Shh…Diam! (which basically translates to “Shut up!”) are followed by Malaysian filmmaker Yihwen Chen as they try to influence the country’s shifting political landscape
  • It tackles themes of self-expression, self-acceptance and camaraderie within the confides of a deeply conservative backdrop
  • The film made its world premiere at the 2025 edition of the Berlin Film Festival, where audiences fell in love with the band’s free-spirited energy
  • It’ll have viewers rocking along to the various anthems that this band have become renowned for across the country and the wider world

Queer as Punk is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 May 2026

PLOT: Hannah (Colman) and her non-binary teenager Frances (Mason-Hyde) travel from Australia to Amsterdam to reconnect with Hannah’s gay father Jim (Lithgow), but when Frances expresses a keen interest in staying with him for a year, Hannah is compelled to re-examine her family history…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Sophie Hyde, the BAFTA-nominated Australian filmmaker behind Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, returns with a deeply personal inter-generational family drama
  • It is a semi-autobiographical piece, with Hyde basing the film on her experiences with her father, the late activist Jim Hyde who came out as gay when Sophie was a child
  • The roles are filled by some exceptional screen talent including Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, soon-to-be Dumbledore John Lithgow, and Hyde’s own non-binary offspring Aud Mason-Hyde in their first feature role since their mother’s narrative debut 52 Tuesdays
  • The pristine streets and canals of Amsterdam form a wondrous backdrop to the intimate dynamics shared between the primary characters
  • It’s an emotional offering that sees the filmmaker give far more of herself than with any other project she’s been involved in

What’s Returning to Cinemas This Week?

Top Gun (dir. Tony Scott)

CREW: Tony Scott (director), Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. (writers), Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson (producers), Harold Faltermeyer (composer), Jeffrey Kimball (cinematographer), Chris Lebenzon and Billy Weber (editors)

PLOT: Pete Mitchell (Cruise), known by his call sign “Maverick”, is an impulsive and cocky US Navy pilot who is sent to complete further training at Top Gun, a prestigious flight academy where he competes against fellow pilot Tom “Iceman” Kasansky (Kilmer) for the school’s top honours, and ignites a romance with flight instructor Charlotte Blackwood (McGillis)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • You’ll feel the need to speed towards the big screen to revisit the classic blockbuster as it celebrates its 40th anniversary
  • The movie, directed by the late action legend Tony Scott, helped solidify a certain Tom Cruise as one of the biggest movie stars on the planet
  • Despite a mixed critical reception, the film became a box office phenomenon and even inspired a new wave of naval aviators to sign up for the US Navy
  • It’s filled with iconic quotes, memorable characters, an awe-inspiring soundtrack (featuring band Berlin’s Oscar-winning ballad “Take My Breath Away”) and of course plenty of 80s homoeroticism (that volleyball scene…)
  • And while you’re marking this classic film’s milestone anniversary, don’t forget to also check out its much-beloved sequel (see below)!

Top Gun is showing in cinemas from Wednesday 13 May 2026

Top Gun: Maverick (dir. Joseph Kosinski)

PLOT: Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) is reluctantly brought back to Top Gun to help train a new generation of fighter pilots for a dangerous mission, while also confronting Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Teller), the son of his deceased friend…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • With the original film celebrating its 40th anniversary (see above), there’s also the chance to revisit its decades-later sequel which more than outpaces its predecessor
  • Tom Cruise returned to his most iconic role after more than 30 years, this time under the direction of Joseph Kosinski whom he had previously worked with on Oblivion
  • After numerous delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film debuted to outstanding box office, widespread critical acclaim and even an Oscar nomination for Best Picture
  • It’s quickly become a modern blockbuster that has everything audiences could ever want from a classic legacy sequel while also being its own movie
  • With a third film currently in development, it won’t be long before audiences can see Cruise and co in the skies again – but until then, both this and the original will remind viewers of why they became so popular in the first place!

Top Gun: Maverick is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 May 2026

Shrek (dirs. Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson)

PLOT: In a magical kingdom, Shrek (Myers) is an ogre who lives a solitary life in his beloved swamp, but when it is suddenly occupied by several fairy tale characters after they are exiled by the cruel Lord Farquaad (Lithgow), Shrek is forced to go on a quest with the talkative Donkey (Murphy) to rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona (Diaz) in order to get his land back…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Arguably the most iconic film in DreamWorks’ library of animated classics is back on the big screen as it celebrates its 25th anniversary
  • Originally adapted from William Steig’s picture book of the same name, producer Jeffrey Katzenberg saw it as an opportunity to parody the fairy tale storytelling of his former employer Disney, where he oversaw the studio’s Renaissance period before being unceremoniously ousted
  • Audiences and critics responded so well to the film that it’s inspired numerous sequels (including one due out next year), numerous theme park attractions, and more than a few internet memes
  • The film scored the very first Oscar for Best Animated Feature, beating contenders Monsters Inc and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, and was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, a rarity for an animated film
  • It continues to be beloved by audiences everywhere for its sardonic humour, mature storytelling and unforgettable skewering of classic fairy tales

Shrek is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 May 2026

Cronos (dir. Guillermo del Toro)

CAST: Federico Luppi, Ron Perlman, Claudio Brook, Tamara Shanath, Margarita Isabel, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Mario Iván Martínez, Farnesio de Bernal, Jorge Martínez de Hoyos

PLOT: After stumbling across a 400-year-old artefact that is said to grant eternal life, elderly antique dealer Jesús Gris reaps the benefits but also develops a disturbing habit…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Guillermo del Toro’s groundbreaking directorial debut returns with an all-new 4K restoration, as part of the BFI’s current season centred around the beloved auteur
  • It introduced the world to del Toro’s imaginative filmmaking and empathetic storytelling, telling a timeless cautionary tale with echoes of classic monster horror
  • Federico Luppi, one of the director’s favourite actors, earned some of his best-ever reviews with this film, and he worked with the director on several other films before his death in 2017
  • At first, it seemed like the film would fall into obscurity after debuting in just two cinemas in the US, but critical word of mouth helped propel it to an astonishing $17k opening weekend gross (again, from just TWO cinemas!)
  • Both beautifully haunting and hauntingly beautiful, it would of course mark the very beginning of an illustrious career for the filmmaker

Cronos is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 May 2026

Space Jam (dir. Joe Pytka)

CAST: Michael Jordan, Wayne Knight, Theresa Randle, Bill Murray, Billy West, Dee Bradley Baker, Danny DeVito, Charles Barkley, Muggsy Bogues, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, Manner Washington, Eric Gordon, Penny Bae Bridges, Larry Bird, Bob Bergen, Bill Farmer, Maurice LaMarche, Kath Soucie, Brandon Hammond, Thom Barry

CREW: Joe Pytka (director), Leo Benvenuti, Timothy Harris, Steve Rudnick and Herschel Weingrod (writers), Daniel Goldberg, Joe Medjuck and Ivan Reitman (producers), James Newton Howard (composer), Michael Chapman (cinematographer), Sheldon Kahn (editor)

PLOT: When Bugs Bunny (West), Daffy Duck (Baker) and the rest of the Looney Tunes are threatened with enslavement by a group of aliens, led by the evil Swackhammer (DeVito), their only chance is to defeat them in a game of basketball – and they soon recruit retired NBA superstar Michael Jordan (as himself) to help them out…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • One of the most unexpected crossovers in basketball and animation history returns to the big screen for its 30th anniversary
  • The project was famously inspired by a popular series of TV commercials for Nike, which saw Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny fool around on the court, and were directed by this film’s filmmaker Joe Pytka
  • Jordan of course played himself opposite everyone’s favourite cartoon characters, while fellow athletes Charles Barkley and Larry Bird, as well as the incomparable Bill Murray, show up in vital cameo roles
  • Despite mixed reception among critics and long-time Looney Tunes fans, the film became a major box office hit in addition to a cult classic among audiences, with a sequel being made years later starring LeBron James (and, contrary to what others will tell you, isn’t as bad as everyone makes it out to be!)
  • With plenty of 90s nostalgia and shameless corporate pandering, not to mention plenty of hilarious cartoon and sports action, it’s pretty much a slam-dunk in every case

Space Jam is showing in cinemas from Friday 15 May 2026
