This Week’s Movie Menu (13 – 19 October 2025)

Take a gander at the latest film releases to have been sent from the heavens, including an angelic comedy, a fascinating story of true crime, the return of a terrifying villain, and a couple of absolute twits…

Movie of the Week

Roofman (dir. Derek Cianfrance)

CAST: Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst, LaKeith Stanfield, Peter Dinklage, Ben Mendelsohn, Uzo Aduba, Juno Temple, Emory Cohen, Melonie Diaz, Molly Price, Lily Collias, Tony Revolori, Jimmy O. Yang

CREW: Derek Cianfrance (director, writer), Kirt Gunn (writer), Lynette Howell Taylor, Duncan Montgomery, Alex Orlovsky, Chris Parker, Jamie Patricof and Dylan Sellers (producers), Christopher Bear (composer), Andrij Parekh (cinematographer), Jim Helton and Ron Patane (editor)

PLOT: Jeffrey Manchester (Tatum), a former United States Army Reserve officer, commits a series of unusual robberies that get him arrested and sentenced to prison, from which he promptly escapes and takes refuge in a Toys “R” Us store…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The fascinating and very real story of a robbery with the most bonkers of track records is retold in director Derek Cianfrance’s madcap caper
  • It’s the director’s first film in almost ten years, after previously impressing with heavy dramas like Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines
  • This one takes on a much more comedic tone, anchored by a charismatic lead turn by Channing Tatum that humanises the central figure but doesn’t excuse him for his crimes
  • As the story takes more and more unpredictable turns, you’ll be left amazed not just at the fact that most of it actually happened, but by how it’s all held together with real heart and passion
  • Anyone looking for a good laugh as well as a compelling real-life tale of crimes and misdemeanours (and lots of cuddly toys) will find this a film you’ll want to shout from the rooftops about

Roofman is showing in cinemas from Friday 17 October 2025

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

Good Fortune (dir. Aziz Ansari)

CAST: Seth Rogen, Aziz Ansari, Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh, Keanu Reeves, Sherry Cola, Stephen McKinley Henderson

CREW: Aziz Ansari (director, writer, producer), Brady Fujikawa, Jon Humphrey, Anthony Katagas and Alan Yang (producers), Carter Burwell (composer), Adam Newport-Berra (cinematographer), Daniel Haworth (editor)

PLOT: Gabriel (Reeves), a guardian angel trying to earn his wings, attempts to help struggling handyman Arj (Ansari) who, whilst performing a number of odd jobs for wealthy socialite Jeff (Rogen), hits rock bottom. Gabriel subsequently decides to switch the lives of both men to show that wealth can’t solve Arj’s problems, only for the plan to backfire and banish Gabriel to Earth, where he forms an uneasy bond with the now-struggling Jeff…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Comedian and actor Aziz Ansari finally makes his directorial debut (after his last attempt, the now-cancelled Being Mortal, got shut down after on-set malpractice) with a brightly funny fantasy satire
  • In addition to directing and writing, Ansari also stars alongside Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves in a timely take on a concept made famous by Wim Wenders’s Wings of Desire
  • Reeves in particular is a blast as the hapless guardian angel at the centre of the chaos within Ansari’s smart and layered narrative
  • It humorously proves that some of the things we’ve been taught to prioritise over others may not always be the answer, which the script treats with both sincerity and hilarity
  • With fewer high-concept comedies like this being made, let alone being given a major theatrical release, it is vital that we all go out and support it while also being thoroughly entertained by its silliness

Good Fortune is showing in cinemas from Friday 17 October 2025

Black Phone 2 (dir. Scott Derrickson)

CAST: Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Ethan Hawke, Demián Bichir, Miguel Mora, Jeremy Davies, Arianna Rivas, Anna Lore, Graham Abbey, Maev Beaty

CREW: Scott Derrickson (director, writer, producer), C. Robert Cargill (writer, producer), Jason Blum (producer), Atticus Derrickson (composer), Pär M. Ekberg (cinematographer), Louise Ford (editor)

PLOT: Four years after escaping from the clutches of The Grabber (Hawke), a notorious child kidnapper and murderer, Finn (Thames) is struggling to move on until his younger sister Gwen (McGraw) begins experiencing horrifying visions of a series of murders at a winter camp, where they soon discover that The Grabber is seeking revenge on them from beyond the grave…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The anticipated sequel to the surprise hit 2022 horror introduces terrifying new layers to an already horrific situation
  • Writer-director Scott Derrickson, along with co-writer C. Robert Cargill, return to create a new tale within the world of author Joe Hill’s supernatural short story
  • Ethan Hawke is also back to scare audiences with his unhinged turn as the masked villain, while dealing once again with Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw as the brother-sister duo we can’t get enough of
  • The atmosphere this time is quite literally chilling, with Derrickson employing a more wintery setting amidst new revelations that make the ones in the previous film feel surface-level by comparison
  • It’s a strong horror sequel that seems to be taking the right steps towards launching an all-new franchise, and if they play their cards right then The Grabber could become one of our new genre icons

Black Phone 2 is showing in cinemas from Friday 17 October 2025

After the Hunt (dir. Luca Guadagnino)

CAST: Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, Michael Stuhlbarg, Chloë Sevigny, Lío Mehiel, Ariyan Kassam, Will Price, Thaddea Graham, Christine Dye, Burgess Byrd

CREW: Luca Guadagnino (director, producer), Nora Garrett (writer), Jeb Brody, Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum (producers), Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (composers), Malik Hassan Sayeed (cinematographer), Marco Costa (editor)

PLOT: Alma Olsson (Roberts) is a well-respected professor at Yale University whose colleague and close friend Hank (Garfield) is accused of sexual abuse by Maggie (Edebiri), one of her students…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The latest film from visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is a sobering and deeply complex study of modern-day misconduct in a post-#MeToo world
  • Oscar-winner Julia Roberts delivers one of her strongest performances to date as the college professor caught in the middle of a tense situation between her colleague and her protégé
  • There are some striking supporting turns from Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri and Michael Stuhlbarg, the latter of whom previously wowed with a memorable monologue in Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name
  • It’s a movie that asks difficult questions about how far we are willing to go to prevent justice, even when truly heinous acts have been committed
  • You’ll be thinking long and hard about what this film has to offer, which may well be more than most other films that have tackled the ongoing movement

After the Hunt is showing in cinemas from Friday 17 October 2025

Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie (dir. Ryan Crego)

CAST: Laila Lockhart Kraner, Gloria Estefan, Kirsten Wiig, Ego Nwodim, Kyle Mooney, Jason Mantzoukas, Thomas Lennon, Melissa Villaseñor, Fortune Feimster, Logan Bailey, Darren Criss, Juliet Donenfeld, Eduardo Franco, Maggie Lowe, Sainty Nelson, Donovan Patton, Tara Strong, Carla Tassara, Secunda Wood

CREW: Ryan Crego (director, writer), Melanie Wilson LaBracio and Adam Wilson (writers), Marcei A. Brown, Jason Clark, Jessica Malanaphy and Steven Schweickart (producers), Stephanie Economou (composer), TBA (cinematographer), Marcus Taylor (editor)

PLOT: Gabby (Kraner) travels with her Grandma Gigi (Estefan) to the city of Cat Francisco, but when her prized dollhouse – and her various cat friends who live inside – are kidnapped by eccentric cat lady Vera (Wiig), Gabby must go on a journey to rescue them…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The hit pre-school show from Netflix and DreamWorks Animation is brought to the big screen in a fun-filled outing for the whole family
  • All of your (or more specifically your kids’) favourite characters are off on a colourful adventure filled with sparkly animation and catchy songs
  • The central voice cast returns, including young actor Laila Lockhart Kraner as the titular Gabby, with new additions including acclaimed singer Gloria Estefan and a delightfully evil Kristen Wiig
  • Technically, it is DreamWorks Animation’s first (partially) live-action film that isn’t a remake, following their hit do-over of How to Train Your Dragon earlier this year
  • Whether you’re new to this world or can’t get enough of it on Netflix, it’ll be a treat to see these characters and good morals in cinemas for all to enjoy

Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie is showing in cinemas from Friday 17 October 2025

Souleymane’s Story (dir. Boris Lojkine)

CAST: Abou Sangaré, Nina Meurisse, Alpha Oumar Sow, Emmanuel Yovanie, Younoussa Diallo, Ghislain Mahan, Mamadou Barry, Yaya Diallo, Keita Diallo

CREW: Boris Lojkine (director, writer), Delphine Agut (writer), Bruno Nahon (producer), Tristan Galand (cinematographer), Xavier Sirven (editor)

PLOT: Souleymane (Sangaré) is a Guinean migrant residing in Paris where he works for a food delivery service whilst preparing for his asylum application interview…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • It may be Souleymane’s story (as per the title), but this eye-opening and heartbreaking French drama proves that it’s also the story of many other migrants caught in the European asylum system
  • Debut actor Abou Sangaré is revelatory as the titular protagonist whose anxieties and worries will sadly ring true to anyone who’s been trapped in similar situations
  • Filmmaker Boris Lojkine captures a couple of days in Souleymane’s life as he, and the viewer, experience hostility and prejudice with gritty, almost documentarian camerawork
  • The film was up for the Un Certain Regard prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and came away with numerous other awards including the Jury Prize and Best Performance
  • By simply allowing the audience a portal into the world that people like Souleymane live in and have to endure, the film certifies its essentialness for anyone engaged in migrant-friendly activism

Souleymane’s Story is showing in cinemas from Friday 17 October 2025

What’s Showing At Home This Week?

The Twits (dir. Phil Johnston)

CAST: Johnny Vegas, Margo Martindale, Natalie Portman, Emilia Clarke, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ryan Lopez, Jason Mantzoukas, Timothy Simons, Alan Tudyk, Nicole Byer, Mark Proksch, Rebecca Wisocky, Charlie Berens

CREW: Phil Johnston (director, writer, producer), Meg Favreau (writer), Maggie Malone and Daisy May West (producers), Oli Julian (composer), Erika Dapkewicz (editor)

PLOT: Mr. Twit (Vegas) and Mrs. Twit (Martindale) are a deeply unpleasant couple who run the equally nasty amusement park Twitlandia, but as they quickly rise to power, young orphans Beesha (Ramakrishnan) and Bubsy (Lopez) team up with a group of magical monkeys known as “Muggle-Wumps” to take the Twits down…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The classic Roald Dahl story is adapted into a suitably grotesque animated film that is filled with the author’s trademark eccentricity
  • Johnny Vegas and Margo Martindale voice the repugnant couple of the title, and they’re joined by the likes of Natalie Portman, Emilia Clark and Jason Mantzoukas in an impressive cast
  • They’re all under the direction of Phil Johnston, who previously scored an Oscar nomination for co-directing Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet, and brings his lively approach to the stylish world of Roald Dahl
  • It’s also a musical, with none other than legendary Talking Heads frontman David Byrne contributing a collection of original songs to the story
  • Anyone who’s ever grown up with the highly imaginative tales of this author will find themselves utterly delighted by how well this film captures his penchant for amusingly nasty storytelling

The Twits is streaming exclusively on Netflix from Friday 17 October 2025

Vicious (dir. Bryan Bertino)

CAST: Dakota Fanning, Kathryn Hunter, Mary McCormack, Rachel Blanchard, Devyn Nekoda, Klea Scott, Emily Mitchell

CREW: Bryan Bertino (director, writer), Richard Suckle (producer), Tom Schraeder (composer), Tristan Nyby (cinematographer), Tad Dennis (editor)

PLOT: Polly (Fanning) receives a late-night visit from a mysterious stranger (Hunter) who gives her a box that she must place three things inside of – something she needs, something she hates, and something she loves – before time runs out…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This chilling psychological horror stuffs plenty of scares and thrills into a compact and easily digestible horror template
  • An ever-excellent Dakota Fanning headlines the film from writer-director Bryan Bertino, best known as the creator of The Strangers
  • Its premise is simple yet effective, inviting numerous questions that are sure to provide plenty of alluring answers
  • Watch out for yet another scene-stealing turn by character actor Kathryn Hunter, who brings to life an all-new figure to add to her gallery of grotesque antagonists
  • However it may end up for poor Fanning in this movie, you’ll be glad that you opened up this weird little box of horrors

Vicious is streaming exclusively on Paramount+ from Thursday 16 October 2025

What’s Returning to Cinemas This Week?

Constantine (dir. Francis Lawrence)

CAST: Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Djimon Hounsou, Gavin Rossdale, Peter Stormare, Max Baker, Francis Guinan, José Zúñiga, Jesse Ramirez, April Grace, Tanoai Reed, Valerie Azlynn, Connor Dylan Wryn, Quinn Buniel

CREW: Francis Lawrence (director), Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello (writers), Lorenzo DiBonaventura, Akiva Goldsman, Benjamin Melniker, Lauren Shuler Donner, Erwin Stoff and Michael E. Uslan (producers), Klaus Badelt and Brian Tyler (composers), Philippe Rousselot (cinematographer), Wayne Wahrman (editor)

PLOT: John Constantine (Reeves), a cynical exorcist with the ability to see and communicate with half-angels and half-demons that walk the mortal realm, is reluctantly drawn into a personal investigation by police detective Angela Dodson (Weisz) that sees them confronting a demonic force…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • In time for its 20th anniversary is an all-new re-release of the DC Comics adaptation that slowly but surely found its audience
  • Despite mixed reviews and modest box office upon its initial release, the film has gained a cult following by those who consider it a misunderstood alternative to the now-standard comic-book movie formula
  • Keanu Reeves delivers a memorable lead turn as the titular anti-hero (his casting in spite of the character’s very English origins notwithstanding), with the cast of director Francis Lawrence’s film also featuring the likes of Shia LaBeouf, Peter Stormare, and Oscar-winners Rachel Weisz and Tilda Swinton
  • The film’s reappraisal has reached such heights that a sequel with both Lawrence and Reeves returning is in active development, most likely as part of the new DC Studios’ “Elseworlds” brand (for films taking place outside the main continuity)
  • If it’s a spooky and surprisingly thoughtful trip to Hell and back that you’re after, this will certainly supply you the goods while proving exactly why it’s endured after all these years

Constantine is showing in cinemas from Friday 17 October 2025

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (dir. Miloš Forman)

CAST: Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Will Sampson, William Redfield, Brad Dourif, Sydney Lassick, Christopher Lloyd, Danny DeVito, Dean Brooks, William Duell, Vincent Schiavelli, Michael Berryman, Alonzo Brown, Mwako Cumbuka, Nathan George, Marya Small, Scatman Crothers, Phil Roth, Louisa Moritz, Peter Brocco, Delos V. Smith Jr., Josip Elic, Mimi Sarkisian, Ted Markland, Mary Costa

CREW: Miloš Forman (director), Bo Goldman and Lawrence Hauben (writers), Michael Douglas and Saul Zaentz (producers), Jack Nitzsche (composer), Haskell Wexler (cinematographer), Sheldon Kahn and Lynzee Klingman (editors)

PLOT: In 1963, convict R.P. McMurphy (Nicholson) feigns mental illness so that he can be transferred to a mental institution instead of doing hard labour, and is soon placed under the authoritarian rule of Nurse Ratched (Fletcher), whom R.P. manages to convince his fellow inmates to rebel against…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The Oscar-winning classic from director Miloš Forman marks its 50th anniversary with an all-new 4K restoration
  • Forman’s adaptation of Ken Kesey’s novel took over a decade to develop, and was originally set to have Kirk Douglas star until he was eventually replaced by Jack Nicholson in a career-defining role
  • The film is filled with character actors in hugely memorable roles, some of them making their acting debut such as Christopher Lloyd and Brad Dourif as the stuttering young patient Billy Bibbit
  • Most famously, the film is one of only three movies to have won the “Big Five” at the Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress (for Louise Fletcher’s iconic turn as the chilling Nurse Ratched) and Best Screenplay
  • Its zest for life and freedom is infectious, and continues to inspire and move viewers more than fifty years after its debut

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is showing in cinemas from Friday 17 October 2025

Princess Mononoke (dir. Hayao Miyazaki)

CAST (ENGLISH VERSION): Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Billy Bob Thornton, John DeMita, John DiMaggio, Jada Pinkett Smith, Gillian Anderson, Debi Derryberry, Keith David

CAST (JAPANESE VERSION): Yōji Matsuda, Yuriko Ishida, Yūko Tanaka, Kaoru Kobayashi, Masahiko Nishimura, Tsunehiko Kamijō, Sumi Shimamoto, Makoto Satō, Akihiro Miwa, Mitsuko Mori, Hisaya Morishige, Tetsu Watanabe, Akira Nagoya

CREW: Hayao Miyazaki (director, writer, editor), Toshio Suzuki (producer), Joe Hisaishi (composer), Atsushi Okui (cinematographer), Takeshi Seyama (editor)

PLOT: In ancient Japan, young warrior Ashitaka (Crudup/Matsuda) finds himself cursed after killing a demon, and sets out to find a cure when he finds himself in the middle of a conflict between an industrial town and the spirits of the neighbouring forest, whose fiercest warrior is San (Danes/Ishida), a human girl raised by wolves…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The sprawling anime epic by the iconic Hayao Miyazaki returns to the big screen with a mighty roar (on regular screens this time, after a brief IMAX run in August)
  • Miyazaki began developing the film in 1980, with the finished film being released seventeen years later with a then-groundbreaking blend of traditional 2D animation and CGI backdrops
  • Until Miyazaki’s own Spirited Away, it became the highest-grossing film in Japanese history with over ¥20 billion at the local box office
  • It has become one of Miyazaki’s most treasured films by his fanbase, with filmmakers like James Cameron also citing it as a major influence on their own movies
  • Any Miyazaki die-hard who has not yet seen it on the biggest screen possible will most certainly want to rectify that mistake with this golden opportunity!
