This Week’s Movie Menu (29 June – 5 July 2026)

Linda boca nunu a monstrous mat ka ta gnuour! That’s Minionese for “Get ready for a monstrous week at the movies!” And what a week it is, with an animated Hollywood romp leading the way…

Movie of the Week

Minions & Monsters (dir. Pierre Coffin)

CAST: Pierre Coffin, Trey Parker, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Allison Janney, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges

CREW: Pierre Coffin (director, writer), Brian Lynch (writer), Christopher Meledandri and Bill Ryan (producers), John Powell (composer), Gregory Perler (editor)

PLOT: In the 1920s, the Minions arrive in Hollywood where they hope to make and star in a monster movie, but when they decide to summon real monsters for their film, they unwittingly unleash all sorts of chaos…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The Minions return for their third solo outing – and this time, they’re causing havoc all across Hollywood (and a little bit beyond as well)!
  • Pierre Coffin, a long-time veteran of the hugely popular Despicable Me franchise, returns as both director and the unintelligible voices of the pill-shaped yellow creatures themselves
  • Also among the voice cast are A-list talent like Oscar-winners Christoph Waltz and Jeff Bridges, as well as previous franchise voices Allison Janney and Trey Parker (yes, of South Park fame) in new roles
  • As we’ve all come to expect from the Minions by this point, expect hilarious slapstick aplenty and lots of silliness that will inspire giggle fits in just about everyone
  • With the summer holidays rapidly approaching, this is the perfect movie to kick it all off for families (as well as long-time series fans) everywhere

Minions & Monsters is showing in cinemas from Wednesday 1 July 2026

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

The Invite (dir. Olivia Wilde)

CAST: Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penélope Cruz, Edward Norton

CREW: Olivia Wilde (director), Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (writers), Ben Browning, Megan Ellison and David Permut (producers), Devonté Hynes (composer), Adam Newport-Berra (cinematographer), Anthony Boys and Yorgos Mavropsaridis (editors)

PLOT: Married couple Joe (Rogen) and Angela (Wilde) invite their enigmatic neighbours Piña (Cruz) and Hawk (Norton) to a dinner party in their apartment, but an unexpected proposition throws the whole evening into disarray…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Olivia Wilde’s third film as director – after teen comedy Booksmart and the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling – is her best, and by far her funniest, to date
  • Wilde also forms one-quarter of the four-actor ensemble, alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, all of whom are at the top of their comedic game here
  • It is a remake of the Spanish-language film The People Upstairs, and those who are familiar with that film will know the sorts of crazy directions that Wilde’s version is bound to present
  • After its rapturous debut at Sundance earlier this year, it sparked the festival’s biggest bidding war for distribution rights, with A24 eventually acquiring it for over $12 million (although Black Bear Films is releasing it here in the UK!)
  • Audiences are set for a wild and unpredictable ride as the characters’ night takes some unusual, and always entertaining, routes

The Invite is showing in cinemas from Friday 3 July 2026

Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie (dir. Matt Johnson)

CAST: Matt Johnson, Jay McCarrol, Jared Raab, Ben Petrie, Ethan Eng, Michael Scott, Reid Janisse, Mitch DeRosier, Steve Hamelin, Luke Lalonde, Maddy Wilde, Roz Weston, Mocha Frap

CREW: Matt Johnson (director, writer), Jay McCarrol (writer, composer), Matt Greyson and Matthew Miller (producers), Jared Raab (cinematographer), Curt Lobb and Robert Upchurch (editors)

PLOT: In the city of Toronto, Matt (Johnson) and Jay (McCarrol) are a music duo called Nirvana the Band who, in a desperate new attempt to book a gig at the prestigious Rivoli venue, somehow wind up in the year 2008…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The Canadian comedy sensation finally makes it way into UK cinemas after taking most of North America by storm
  • A feature-length version of the web series (and later television series) Nirvana the Band the Show, it sends creators Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol on a Back to the Future-inspired journey through time!
  • Much of the film was shot in secret over 200 days, with the actors/filmmakers adopting a hidden-camera approach whilst filming in public and committing some rather awe-inspiring stunts without permits!
  • Naturally, it being a Toronto-set film, TIFF awarded it the People’s Choice Award (Midnight Madness) section, beating the likes of Obsession and last week’s release The Furious
  • It’s a hilarious and surprisingly endearing comedy feat that will no doubt have viewers everywhere cackling like absolute mad!

Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie is showing in cinemas from Friday 3 July 2026

My Father’s Island (dir. Vladimir de Fontenay)

CAST: Swann Arlaud, Woody Norman, Ruaridh Mollica, Alma Pöysti, Tuppence Middleton, Maria Arlén Larsen, Yas Bingol

CREW: Vladimir de Fontenay (director, writer), Eliott Khayat and Carole Scotta (producers), Florent Chronie-De Maria and Jeremy Villecourt (composers), Amine Berrada (cinematographer), Nicolas Chaudeurge (editor)

PLOT: Roy (Norman), a troubled young man, travels to a remote island where his estranged father Tom (Arlaud) lives, in the hopes of rebuilding their relationship after a traumatic event tore them apart…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • An unusual father-son bond takes the spotlight in this quietly powerful drama from acclaimed filmmaker Vladimir de Fontenay
  • Swann Arlaud, who previously played the scene-stealing lawyer in the Oscar-winning Anatomy of a Fall, forms some distant yet plentiful chemistry with young co-star Woody Norman (previous of Mike Mills’s film C’mon C’mon)
  • The vast snowy landscapes of Norway form a haunting backdrop as the two central characters work through their shared trauma
  • It made its world premiere at the 2025 edition of the Sundance Film Festival, under the title Sukkwan Island (renamed here because, well, it’s a little risqué when you say it out loud!)
  • If you’ve ever gone through the ordeal of amending the bond with a family member, you may well see a bit of yourself in this unique father and son duo

My Father’s Island is showing in cinemas from Friday 3 July 2026

Birds of War (dirs. Janay Boulos and Abd Alkader Habek)

CAST: Janay Boulos, Abd Alkader Habek

CREW: Janay Boulos and Abd Alkader Habek (directors, writers, producers, cinematographers), Sonja Henrici (producer), Harpal Mudhar and Darren Sng (composers), Will Hewitt (editor)

PLOT: In 2016, London-based Lebanese BBC journalist Janay Boulos meets Syrian activist and freelance cameraman Abd Alkader Habek whilst she covers the Syrian civil war in Aleppo, and they form a deeply personal romance…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Fall in love with a truly unlikely couple in this powerful and deeply romantic documentary as told by the couple themselves
  • Janay Boulos and Abd Alkader Habek dive into thirteen years of their personal archives to create a wider portrait of their relationship, from how it began to where it is today
  • The filmmakers were awarded the Special Jury Award for Journalistic Impact for this film at the Sundance Film Festival back in January, where it also premiered in the World Cinema Documentary Competition section
  • Their story forms an emotional contrast to the various wars and revolutions happening in the immediate background
  • The film goes to show that even in the most hopeless of situations, something good and inspiring can still be formed from it!

Birds of War is showing in cinemas from Friday 3 July 2026

What’s Returning to Cinemas This Week?

Taxi Driver (dir. Martin Scorsese)

CAST: Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, Albert Brooks, Victor Argo, Leonard Harris, Peter Boyle, Harry Northup, Norman Matlock, Martin Scorsese, Diahnne Abbott

CREW: Martin Scorsese (director), Paul Schrader (writer), Julia Phillips and Michael Phillips (producers), Bernard Herrmann (composer), Michael Chapman (cinematographer), Tom Rolf and Melvin Shapiro (editors)

PLOT: Travis Bickle (De Niro), a psychologically disturbed war veteran who now works as a night-shift taxi driver in New York City, finds his mental state deteriorating as he witnesses decadence and sleaze that fuels his urge for violent action…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • One of the most essential films in Martin Scorsese’s eclectic filmography makes its way back into cinemas for its landmark 50th anniversary
  • It was Scorsese’s first collaboration with screenwriter Paul Schrader, with the two later working together on films like Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ and Bringing Out the Dead

  • Nonetheless, upon its release the film became a box office success and an instant classic among critics and audiences, with the film winning the coveted Palme D’Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival, earning four Oscar nominations including Best Picture, and is widely considered to be one of the best films ever made
  • Whether you’ve seen it so many times that you’ve lost count, or you only know it from numerous pop culture references, it’s a movie that demands to be seen on the big screen by cinephiles everywhere
