This Week’s Movie Menu (6 – 12 July 2026)

The summer just continues to give us hit after hit after hit, and this week we’ve got gruesome horror sequels, a must-sea Disney remake, and so much more…

Movie of the Week

Evil Dead Burn (dir. Sébastien Vaniček)

CAST: Souheila Yacoub, Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan, Erroll Shand, Maude Davey, George Pullar, Greta Van Den Brink

CREW: Sébastien Vaniček (director, writer), Florent Bernard (writer), Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert (producers), Philip Lozano (cinematographer), Maxime Caro (editor)

PLOT: After the death of her husband Will (Pullar), Alice (Yacoub) shares an awkward reunion with her grieving in-laws – but the gathering soon descends into hellish chaos when one of them read from the Book of the Dead, causing the family members to gradually turn into demonic Deadites…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The sixth entry in producer Sam Raimi’s influential Evil Dead franchise offers some of the nastiest and most unforgiving horror in the series history
  • French filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček brings to hellish life an all-new standalone story that, much like Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise, goes all out with its nightmarish and darkly funny gore
  • Souheila Yacoub, previously seen in Dune: Part Two, leads a fresh-faced cast that are all susceptible to the unpredictable mechanisms of the deranged beings known as Deadites
  • Raimi isn’t the only franchise regular involved behind the scenes, for none other than Ash himself Bruce Campbell is listed as an executive producer, as is Cronin – groovy, indeed!
  • A third spin-off, titled Evil Dead Wrath, is already deep into production, ensuring that this movie is just the beginning for the franchise’s future!

Evil Dead Burn is showing in cinemas from Thursday 9 July 2026

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

Moana (dir. Thomas Kail)

CAST: Catherine Laga’aia, Dwayne Johnson, John Tui, Frankie Adams, Rena Owen, Jemaine Clement

CREW: Thomas Kail (director), Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller (writers), Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Dwayne Johnson (producers), Opetaia Foa’i, Mark Mancina and Lin-Manuel Miranda (composers), Oscar Faura (cinematographer), Melanie Oliver (editor)

PLOT: On the island of Motunui, Moana (Laga’aia), the spirited teenage daughter of Chief Tui (Tui), answers a call from the surrounding ocean to embark on a voyage that will save her people – and along the way, encounters the legendary demigod Maui (Johnson)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The latest animated classic from Disney’s back catalogue to be remade as a live-action adventure is the studio’s hugely popular Polynesian-inspired musical
  • Despite it not even being a whole decade since the original’s debut, director Thomas Kail – who previously directed the filmed production of co-composer Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton for Disney – recreates the story that has captured the imagination of children everywhere
  • Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as the self-assured demigod Maui and, in addition to starring opposite newcomer Catherine Laga’aia as the titular hero, also produces through his Seven Bucks production company
  • The thrilling action, the lovable characters, and of course the toe-tapping musical numbers are all present and correct, with possibly a couple of new additions here and there as well!
  • Whether or not you think it’s too soon for this remake to even exist at all, it’s a golden opportunity for kids everywhere to re-experience their favourite movie with a fresh look to it all

Moana is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 July 2026

Rosebush Pruning (dir. Karim Aïnouz)

CAST: Jamie Bell, Callum Turner, Riley Keough, Lukas Gage, Elle Fanning, Tracy Letts, Pamela Anderson, Elena Anaya

CREW: Karim Aïnouz (director), Efthimis Filippou (writer), Viola Fügen, Simone Gattoni, Michael Weber and Vladimir Zemtsov (producers), Matthew Herbert (composer), Hélène Louvart (cinematographer), Dávid Jancsó, Ilka Janka Nagy and Heike Parplies (editors)

PLOT: Whilst staying with his affluent family at their Spanish villa, eldest son Jack (Bell) announces to his siblings – Ed (Turner), Anna (Keough) and Robert (Gage) – and their blind father (Letts) that he plans to move in with his girlfriend Martha (Fanning), all while Ed uncovers the disturbing truth behind the death of their mother (Anderson), from whom the family inherited their vast wealth…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • A particularly vapid family lies at the rotten centre of this unusual yet incredibly stylish satire of upper-class society
  • Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz’s second English-language film – after the Henry VIII biopic Firebrand – is a loose remake of the 1965 Italian film Fists in the Pocket, with a script by regular Yorgos Lanthimos collaborator Efthimis Filippou
  • The starry ensemble cast includes Jamie Bell, Riley Keough, Pamela Anderson, Callum Turner and Oscar-nominee Elle Fanning, among a few other recognisable faces
  • Critics have already highlighted the sharp satirical writing as well as some of the more unpredictable, and at times quite stomach-churning, twists and turns
  • It’ll certainly make you feel glad that your own family isn’t anywhere near as messed-up or psychologically damaged as the one in this movie!

Rosebush Pruning is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 July 2026

The Last One for the Road (dir. Francesco Sossai)

CAST: Filippo Scotti, Sergio Romano, Pierpaolo Capovilla, Roberto Citran, Andrea Pennacchi

CREW: Francesco Sossai (director, writer), Adriano Candiago (writer), Marta Donzelli, Philipp Kreuzer, Gregorio Paonessa and Cecilia Trautvetter (producers), Krano (composer), Massimiliano Kuveiller (cinematographer), Paolo Cottignola (editor)

PLOT: In Northern Italy, fifty-something friends Carlobianchi (Romano) and Doriano (Capovilla) decide to turn their misfortunes around by travelling across the country to locate a pile of money buried by their old friend and business associate Genio (Pennacchi), but when they encounter young architecture student Giulio (Scotti), they find even greater riches…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • You’re in for a cheery and boozy time with this Italian road trip comedy fuelled by good vibes and lots of alcohol
  • Filmmaker Francesco Sossai shot the film on-location across various parts of Veneto, a particularly striking region in Italy that’s perfect for the open-mindedness of the plot
  • The three lead actors share such infectious chemistry with one another that it almost feels as though you’re experiencing the fun alongside them
  • After debuting at last year’s Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, the film received a warm reception in its home country as well as several David di Donatello awards (basically, the Italian Oscars)
  • There are whiffs of Sideways and even the classic Samuel Beckett play Waiting for Godot in the story, while Sossai mixes them all into a concoction of his very own

The Last One for the Road is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 July 2026

Shoot the People (dir. Andy Mundy-Castle)

CAST: Misan Harriman

CREW: Andy Mundy-Castle (director), Wyn Baptiste, Adam Gee and Aletha Shepherd (producers), Nik Ammar (composer), Johann Perry (cinematographer), Maeve O’Boyle (editor)

PLOT: World-renowned photographer and activist Misan Harriman sets out to document various protest movements driving social change around the world…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This fascinating documentary shows the world through the literal lens of a modern artist without whom we would be vastly unaware of the atrocities going on in our society
  • Misan Harriman, the trailblazing photographer, is the focus of BAFTA-winning director Andy Mundy-Castle’s film as he captures (again, very literally) some of the most influential social movements of the modern age
  • His photography depicting the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 are covered in this movie, as is his later documentation on the Palestinian liberation movement
  • As we see Harriman’s striking and often emotional work up close, we are better able to see the urgency and humanity that drove many of these international protests
  • It should hopefully serve as a call to arms not just for photographers aspiring to follow in Harriman’s wake, but also for various other people who are desperate to bring about change in an increasingly unstable world

Shoot the People is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 July 2026

Life Support (dir. Daniele Rugo)

CAST: Denise Gough

CREW: Daniele Rugo (director), William Parry (producer), Robert Del Naja, Euan Dickinson and Habib Shehada Hanna (composers), Mahmoud Abou Hamda and Suleiman Hejjy (cinematographers), Masahiro Hirakubo (editor)

PLOT: As Gaza falls victim to Israel’s constant bombardment, a small group of international doctors breach the blockade and uncover far more than just a humanitarian crisis…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The closest yet we’ve come to truly witnessing the horrors of the genocide in Gaza is contained in this harrowing yet essential new documentary
  • The film, from director Daniele Rugo, covers two years of the atrocities in the Middle East, as told through the eyes of the healthcare workers who risked everything to help those caught up in the attacks
  • Andor star Denise Gough, a vocal advocate against the ongoing genocide of Gaza’s people, narrates the film with a fiery and pleasing passion in her voice
  • Several other high-profile advocates are listed as executive producers, including ousted Scream star Melissa Barrera, filmmaker Asif Kapadia, and Oscar-winning actor Susan Sarandon
  • It’s a film that is undoubtedly difficult to watch, but to understand the extent of the violence and the suffering in full, they must be viewed with brave eyes

Life Support is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 July 2026

What’s Returning to Cinemas This Week?

The Girls (dir. Sumitra Peries)

CAST: Vasanthi Chathurani, Ajith Jinadasa, Jenita Samaraweera, Shyama Ananda, Trilicia Gunawardena, Chitra Wakishta, Senaka Perera, Nimal Dayaratne, Dayamanthi Pattiarachchi, Joe Abeywickrema

CREW: Sumitra Peries (director, writer, editor), Lester James Peries (producer), Nimal Mendis (composer), M. S. Ananda (cinematographer)

PLOT: In a small village in Sri Lanka, Kusum (Chathurani) romantically pines for her childhood friend Nimal (Jinadasa), despite belonging to a lower social class than he does…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The classic groundbreaking tale of tragic love in Sri Lanka is brought back to the big screen in an all-new 4K restoration
  • It was remarkable at the time of its release for its uniquely feminine perspective, as well as its deceptively simple premise
  • The film marked the directorial debut of filmmaker Sumitra Peries, the wife and creative partner of pioneering Sri Lankan director Lester James Peries (who also produced this movie)
  • This newly tidied-up version was made possible by the Film Heritage Foundation, an organisation dedicated to preserving South Asian cinema, and made its world debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival
  • Its themes of unrequited love and romantic regret are extraordinarily timeless, even almost fifty years since its debut
