We were born to run towards the movies, and this week’s selection of new releases will make anyone get their running shoes ready, for they include a soulful musician biopic, imaginative family adventures, an intense real-time political thriller, and a return to the deepest depths of the earth…

Movie of the Week

Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (dir. Scott Cooper)

CAST: Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Stephen Graham, Odessa Young, Gaby Hoffmann, Marc Maron, David Krumholtz, Johnny Cannizzaro, Harrison Gilbertson, Chris Jaymes, Grace Gummer

CREW: Scott Cooper (director, writer, producer), Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson and Scott Stuber (producers), Jeremiah Fraites (composer), Masanobu Takayanagi (cinematographer), Pamela Martin (editor)

PLOT: In 1982, young Bruce Springsteen (White) is on the cusp of fame when he decides to record his next album, titled Nebraska, in his childhood bedroom in New Jersey…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The legendary Bruce Springsteen is the latest musician to have his life turned into a film, with this one taking a look at the musician’s crafting of what would become one of the most influential albums of all time
  • Jeremy Allen White, the Emmy-winning star of The Bear, slips into The Boss’s shoes in a transformative turn where he perfectly captures his raw and energetic stage presence
  • Filmmaker Scott Cooper’s adaptation of the non-fiction book by Warren Zanes also features a strong supporting cast including Succession star Jeremy Strong and Adolescence’s Stephen Graham
  • The film dives deep into some heavy and often upsetting themes as it portrays aspects of Springsteen’s early life and the demons that he carried around with him at the time
  • With an emotionally charged script and a dazzling lead performance, expect this to feature heavily in the upcoming awards season as other recent musician biopics like A Complete Unknown were

Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere is showing in cinemas from Friday 24 October 2025

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

Regretting You (dir. Josh Boone)

CAST: Allison Williams, Mckenna Grace, Dave Franco, Mason Thames, Willa Fitzgerald, Scott Eastwood, Clancy Brown, Sam Morelos, Ethan Costanilla, Aubrey Brockwell

CREW: Josh Boone (director), Susan McMartin (writer), Brunson Green, Robert Kulzer, Anna Todd and Flavia Viotti (producers), TBA (composer), Tim Orr (cinematographer), Marc Clark and Robb Sullivan (editors)

PLOT: Morgan Grant (Williams) and her teenage daughter Clara (Grace) are left devastated when Morgan’s husband and Clara’s father Chris (Eastwood), along with Morgan’s sister Jenny (Fitzgerald), is killed in a car accident, but when revelations about the deceased’s relationship to one another come to light, much to the woe of Morgan and Jenny’s fiancé Jonah (Franco), she must find a way past her grief and hide the truth from Clara, who becomes involved with local boy Miller (Thames)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The financial success of It Ends with Us (its behind-the-scenes headaches notwithstanding) has led to another one of Colleen Hoover’s books being adapted into a compassionate crowd-pleasing drama
  • Josh Boone, the director of acclaimed YA hit The Fault in Our Stars, tells the emotional story of grief from two different perspectives that will certainly get the waterworks going
  • Allison Williams and Mckenna Grace form the mighty mother-daughter duo at its centre, along with supporting turns by Dave Franco and Mason Thames as their respective love interests
  • It raises difficult but necessary questions about the sanctity of relationships and how much our other halves truly meant to us, even in death
  • Hopefully, it’ll do well enough with audiences that even more of Hoover’s bibliography will be adapted into the future (so long as certain people aren’t involved…)

Regretting You is showing in cinemas from Friday 24 October 2025

The Mastermind (dir. Kelly Reichardt)

CAST: Josh O’Connor, Alana Haim, Hope Davis, John Magaro, Gaby Hoffmann, Bill Camp, Sterling Thompson, Jasper Thompson, Eli Gelb, Cole Doman, Javion Allen, Matthew Maher, Rhenzy Feliz, D.J. Stroud

CREW: Kelly Reichardt (director, writer, editor), Neil Kopp, Vincent Savino and Anish Savjani (producers), Rob Mazurek (composer), Christopher Blauvelt (cinematographer)

PLOT: In the early 1970s, James Blaine Mooney (O’Connor) is a suburban family man who lives a double life as an art thief, but after stealing a number of paintings from a museum in broad daylight, he is confined to a life on the run…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Acclaimed indie filmmaker Kelly Reichardt presents a wry and hugely entertaining portrait of an unlikely thief whose ambitions are larger than his build
  • Josh O’Connor continues his rapid rise to stardom with an engrossing lead turn where he gets to use his natural screen charisma as an effective weapon
  • He’s joined by the likes of Licorice Pizza’s Alana Haim, character actor Bill Camp and Past Lives scene-stealer John Magaro who all bring life to their supporting roles
  • Reichardt applies her unique filmmaking style to a madcap plot that’s among her most ambitious pieces of work in an already distinguishable career
  • It’s a loving callback to 70s caper flicks with a postmodern twist that will open up a strong appetite among audiences for more films of this nature

The Mastermind is showing in cinemas from Friday 24 October 2025

Pets on a Train (dirs. Benoît Daffis and Jean-Christian Tassy)

CAST: Damien Ferrette, Hervé Jolly, Kaycie Chase, Frantz Confiac, Emmanuel Garijo, Nicolas Marié, Stéphane Ronchewski, Sébastien Desjours

CREW: Benoît Daffis and Jean-Christian Tassy (directors), David Alaux and Jean-François Tosti (writers, producers), Eric Tosti (writer), Le Feste Antonacci (composer), TBA (editor)

PLOT: Falcon (Ferrette), a raccoon thief, finds himself on a train for a routine swindle, only for the train to be taken over by Hans (Confiac), a vengeful badger, who sends the locomotive speeding across the country, and only Falcon and righteous police dog Rex (Jolly) can stop him…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Imagine Speed or Bullet Train but with cute furry animals as your action heroes, and you have a sense of what this fun family adventure is like
  • The animated feature, originally a French production, introduces a cuddly set of heroes and villains that kids and parents can easily root for and against respectively
  • Even though the majority of the film is set on a moving train, there are some creative set-pieces that make good use of the limited space, even in animated form
  • Of course, there’s plenty of sharp-witted gags and highly effective slapstick that children can giggle senselessly over, while adults can appreciate the smooth animation
  • With half-term just around the corner, this is the perfect film to take young kids to for an exciting day out at the movies!

Pets on a Train is showing in cinemas from Friday 24 October 2025

Love+War (dirs. Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi)

CAST: Lynsey Addario

CREW: Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi (directors, producers), Anna Barnes and Shannon Dill (producers), Claudia Sarne (composer), Thorsten Thielow (cinematographer), Keiko Deguchi and Hypatia Porter (editors)

PLOT: Lynsey Addario, the Pulitzer Prize–winning photojournalist, sets out to document the war in Ukraine…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The Oscar-winning filmmakers behind Free Solo and Nyad turn their attention to a legendary photographer and her illustrious career
  • Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vaserhelyi follow photojournalist Lynsey Addario as she risks her life to capture the realities of war in Europe
  • We also get glimpses into Addario’s most notorious feats, including her coverage of the Iraq war and her 2011 capture by the Libyan government
  • At its core is a study of what makes someone like Addario want to put themselves in danger for the sake of capturing real-life atrocities to show the world
  • Both a celebratory bio-doc and a compelling analysis of modern-day journalism, this is a formidable film that will leave you breathless

Love+War is showing in cinemas from Friday 24 October 2025

Sketch (dir. Seth Worley)

CREW: Seth Worley (director, writer, editor), Katelyn Botsch, Dusty Brown, Tony Hale, Daryl C. Lefever and Steve Taylor (producers), Cody Fry (composer), Megan Stacey (cinematographer)

PLOT: Amber (Belle), an imaginative young girl who enjoys drawing imaginary monsters in her sketchbook, accidentally drops the book into a magical pond that brings to life the monsters, who promptly proceed to wreak havoc on the town…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This creative family comedy offers a thrilling adventure that anyone of any age can thoroughly enjoy
  • It marks the feature debut of filmmaker Seth Worley, who expands his proof-of-concept short film Darker Colours, and forms a strong cast including character actors Tony Hale and D’Arcy Carden and younger performers Bianca Belle and Kue Lawrence for plenty of antics
  • The real stars, though, are the monsters that come to life from a child’s sketchbook, and their imaginative designs along with the impressive effects used to create them
  • It received unanimous praise when it debuted at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where it was quickly picked up for distribution by Angel Studios (a rare non-faith-based acquisition for the company)
  • With Halloween approaching fast, here’s a strong family-oriented movie with horror elements that comfortably throws back to harder kid’s films of the 80s and 90s

Sketch is showing in cinemas from Friday 24 October 2025

A Tooth Fairy Tale (dir. Michael Johnson)

CAST: Booboo Stewart, Larkin Bell, Vivica A. Fox, Jon Lovitz, Fran Drescher, Jailen Bates, Mary Deaton, Nicolas Greco, Maz Jobrani, Paty Lombard, Tony Nation, Zachary Alexander Rice, Presley Ryan

PLOT: Van (Stewart), a teenage tooth fairy who yearns for adventure beyond his restricted civilisation, forms a connection with a goblin named Gemma (Bell), despite the age-old animosity between their kind, and they soon set out on a journey to restore peace to their kingdoms…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Discover a world of fantasy and wonder in a magical family adventure that children can sink their teeth into
  • There are strong characters for young viewers to become attached to, as well as fine morals for them to take away and apply to their own lives
  • Descendants star Booboo Stewart leads a voice cast that includes SNL veteran Jon Lovitz and comedic character actor Fran Drescher
  • There are dazzling visuals to go along with a bouncy soundtrack that will get kids jumping for joy in their seats
  • It’s a likeable animated romp that will do just nicely for young families looking for something to watch this half-term

A Tooth Fairy Tale is showing in cinemas from Friday 24 October 2025

What’s Showing At Home This Week?

PLOT: When a nuclear missile from an unknown source is fired towards the United States, numerous authority figures – including the President (Elba) – scramble to figure out who is responsible and how to respond before the missile strikes…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow returns for her first film in eight years with a truly nail-biting real-time thriller that feels exceptionally relevant right now
  • The acclaimed director of Point Break and The Hurt Locker focuses on a wide ensemble of characters who have their own unique, and sometimes not very helpful, ways of handling a genuine crisis
  • Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson and Anthony Ramos are just some of the names that Bigelow has assembled to fill roles that speak to who we are in this day and age of grave uncertainty
  • It will no doubt cause even greater paranoia among those already concerned with the antagonistic nature of international countries in our reality, and may inspire plenty others to take action before it’s too late
  • Fans of the director will be ecstatic to find that almost a decade away hasn’t eroded her ability to inject tension into just about every single frame

A House of Dynamite is streaming exclusively on Netflix from Friday 24 October 2025

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Oscar-winning filmmaker Ron Howard presents a tense historical thriller that is based on real alarming events
  • Howard and screenwriter Noah Pink concoct a very Lord of the Flies-esque story about European settlers discovering that they pose the biggest threat to each other
  • The rather starry ensemble includes various Oscar nominees including Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby and Ana de Armas, as well as acclaimed character actors like Daniel Brühl, Richard Roxburgh and Sydney Sweeney
  • There is a delicious portion of jealousy, manipulation and possibly even murder to chew on as the characters succumb to their most primitive instincts
  • It’s got plenty of stellar filmmaking, blinding star power, and maybe a little hint of campiness to make for an exceptionally entertaining watch

Eden is streaming exclusively on Prime Video from Friday 24 October 2025

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle (dir. Michelle Garza Cervera)

CAST: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Maika Monroe, Raúl Castillo, Martin Starr, Mileiah Vega, Riki Lindhome, Shannon Cochran

PLOT: Caitlyn Morales (Winstead), an affluent suburban mother, hires Polly Murphy (Monroe) as the new nanny for her baby, only to soon discover that she is not exactly the person she claims to be…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The 90s psychological thriller cult classic is given a modern-day revamp that recontextualises the unnerving plot and disturbed characters
  • Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Maika Monroe have a blast playing the tormented mother and untrustworthy nanny respectively
  • It’s directed by Mexican filmmaker Michelle Garza Cervera, who previously impressed with her debut horror feature Huesera: The Bone Woman
  • Fans of the original, which starred Rebecca De Mornay and Annabelle Sciorra in the Monroe and Winstead roles, will pick up on memorable moments and lines that are given a whole new meaning in this new setting
  • For anyone who misses the days when intense thrillers like this were a dime a dozen, this will serve as a nice throwback while revelling in being its own thing

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is streaming exclusively on Disney+ from Friday 22 October 2025

PLOT: The story of comedy icons Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, as told by their actor/filmmaker son Ben Stiller…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Ben Stiller presents his most personal film to date as he explores the life and times of his comedian parents
  • The documentary charts the initial partnership and later union of Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, and how they went on to not only conquer the world of comedy but also find genuine connection in one another
  • It also explores the couple’s home life, as Stiller reveals intimate home footage that shows what kind of parents they were and how they navigated their fame in order to preserve their family bond
  • There are plenty of valuable life lessons to take away from the bond that Stiller and Meara shared, as well as their contribution to the wider world of comedy
  • Moreover, it establishes their son as a filmmaker whose heart and sincerity can stretch into any genre, whether it be comedy or thriller or, in this case, documentary

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Neil Marshall’s terrifying horror masterpiece is back to make cinemagoers jump once more in honour of its 20th anniversary
  • The director’s follow-up to his cult horror-comedy breakout Dog Soldiers became a major box office success upon its release, grossing almost $60 million against its £3.5 million budget
  • Numerous critics have called it one of the best horror films of the 2000s, with one of the most memorable endings within the genre so far this century
  • The claustrophobia of the cave-set scenes, along with the unnerving nature of the “crawlers” underneath the surface, makes for some incredibly suspenseful moments that still hold up
  • As it did when it first came out, this film will give you plenty of nightmares and put you off from ever going cave-diving in your life!

The Descent is showing in cinemas from Friday 24 October 2025

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • One of the most acclaimed films by the late filmmaker Terence Davies makes a grand return to the big screen in time for its 25th anniversary
  • Adapted from Edith Wharton’s 1905 novel of the same name, Davies intriguingly aligns the judgement and hypocrisies of turn-of-the-century society with the similar ideals of today’s world
  • Gillian Anderson, then best known for The X-Files, came into her own on the big screen with a lead performance that nabbed her the British Independent Film Award for Best Actress
  • Boasting stellar costumes and sets, as well as a starry supporting cast that includes Dan Aykroyd, Laura Linney and Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern, it truly is a handsome production
  • Filled with heartbreak, tragedy, and above all romance, this is an emotional rollercoaster that shows how well Terence Davies was able to deliver such raw yet understated humanity
