This Week’s Movie Menu (23 – 29 March 2026)

You’re in for a killer new week at the movies, for among the line-up of fresh releases coming to cinemas and at home, we have an ultra-violent action extravaganza, a hilarious relationship comedy, and the return of a 90s Shakespeare classic, to highlight just a few…

Movie of the Week

They Will Kill You (dir. Kirill Sokolov)

CAST: Zazie Beetz, Myha’la, Paterson Joseph, Tom Felton, Heather Graham, Patricia Arquette

CREW: Kirill Sokolov (director, writer), Alex Livtak (writer), David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Dan Kagan, Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti (producers), Carolis Rafael Rivera (composer), Isaac Bauman (cinematographer), Luke Doolan (editor)

PLOT: Asia Reaves (Beetz), a former convict desperately looking for work, answers a job ad seeking a housekeeper at a mysterious New York high-rise known as the Virgil, only to discover she’s entered the domain of a demonic cult that seeks to make her their next offering – but not unless she fights back…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • If last week’s Ready or Not 2: Here I Come wasn’t enough blood-soaked mayhem involving twisted plots against hapless protagonists, then this balls-to-the-wall action rollercoaster offers plenty of extra helpings
  • Zazie Beetz announces herself as an action hero to never underestimate as she lays into her deadly assailants with the kind of brute force that could make even Jason Statham wet himself!
  • It marks the English-language debut of Russian filmmaker Kirill Sokolov, who previously made a name for himself with the gory Tarantino homage Why Don’t You Just Die!
  • There are some truly unhinged fight sequences as Beetz faces off against everyone from Tom Felton to Heather Graham to a creepy Patricia Arquette, all of whom are having a blast playing up their deranged evil
  • Original films like this, especially within the action genre, should be nurtured and treated with as much excitement as John Wick and The Raid when those franchises made their own debuts!

They Will Kill You is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 March 2026

Splitsville (dir. Michael Angelo Covino)

CAST: Dakota Johnson, Adria Arjona, Kyle Marvin, Michael Angelo Covino, Nicholas Braun, David Castañeda, O-T Fagbenle, Charlie Gillespie, Simon Webster, Nahéma Ricci, Tyrone Benskin, Letitia Brookes, Jessika Mathurin, Stephen Adekolu

CREW: Michael Angelo Covino (director, writer, producer), Kyle Marvin (writer, producer), Jeff Deutchman, Ro Donnelly, Ryan Heller, Dakota Johnson, Emily Korteweg and Samantha Racanelli (producers), Dabney Morris and David Wingo (composers), Adam Newport-Berra (cinematographer), Sara Shaw (editor)

PLOT: After his wife Ashley (Arjona) reveals that she’s been unfaithful before asking for a divorce, Carey (Marvin) seeks support in his married friends Paul (Covino) and Julie (Johnson) who reveal that they are in an open relationship, which leads to unexpected connections that threaten to dismantle everyone’s lives…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This hilarious relationship comedy will leave you laughing hard at the farcical steps taken between two very different but also very similar couples
  • It’s the much-anticipated second film from director Michael Angelo Covino and co-writer Kyle Marvin, two longtime friends who previously made waves with their toxic friendship comedy The Climb
  • They also act opposite each other as they did in The Climb, only this time they’ve also got incredible support in the form of co-stars Dakota Johnson and Adria Arjona
  • For much of the film’s outlandish physical comedy, both Covino and Marvin performed many of the dangerous stunts themselves!
  • It brought the house down at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, with many declaring it to be one of the year’s funniest films – and now is your chance to see if they were telling the truth!

Splitsville is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 March 2026

DJ Ahmet (dir. Georgi M. Unkovski)

CAST: Arif Jakup, Agush Agushev, Dora Akan Zlatanova, Aksel Mehmet, Selpin Kerim, Atila Klince

CREW: Georgi M. Unkovski (director, writer), Ivana Shekutkoska and Ivan Unkovski (producers), Alen Sinkauz and Nenad Sinkauz (composers), Naum Doksevski (cinematographer), Michal Reich (editor)

PLOT: In a remote and fiercely conservative Yörük village in North Macedonia, 15-year-old Ahmet (Jakup) lives on a sheep farm with his father (Mehmet) and younger brother Naim (Agushev) when he finds solace in techno music and falls in love with Aya (Zlatanova), who is arranged to be married…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • It’s impossible not to smile all throughout this charming coming-of-age crowd-pleaser that sheds light on a vibrant community within North Macedonia
  • Young performers Arif Jakup, Agush Agushev and Dora Akan Zlatanova form a bright unit as they form meaningful connections whilst also fighting against their elders’ conservatism
  • The mix of EDM music into the emotional core of the narrative gives it a funky zest of life that sets it apart from other films of similar concepts
  • Debut feature filmmaker Georgi M. Unkovski was awarded the World Cinema Audience Award at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, and it has gone on to delight other festival audiences across the world
  • Like the recent Sirât, it will make you want to dance along with the music and good vibes – though this one will certainly leave you feeling a little happier!

DJ Ahmet is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 March 2026

Redoubt (dir. John Skoog)

CAST: Denis Lavant, Agnieszka Podsiadlik, Livia Millhagen, Aron Skoog, Sol Roach, Michalis Koutsogiannakis

CREW: John Skoog (director, writer, editor), Kettil Kasang (writer), Caroline Drab and Erik Hemmendorff (producers), Amina Hocine (composer), Ita Zbroniec-Zajt (cinematographer), Jussi Rautaniemi (editor)

PLOT: In Cold War-era Sweden, eccentric farmhand Karl-Göran Persson (Lavant) is inspired to construct a bomb shelter out of makeshift items to protect himself and his fellow villagers from a possible nuclear strike…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • An unusual bit of Swedish folk history is brought to appropriately idiosyncratic life in filmmaker John Skoog’s quirky debut narrative feature
  • Primarily known for his shorts and feature docudrama Ridge, Skoog was inspired by a local legend who lived very close to where he once did
  • French actor Denis Lavant makes his Swedish-language debut in the central role of Karl-Göran Persson, whose real-life exploits were almost as strange as they’re depicted in this film!
  • The film was shot with 35mm monochrome cinematography which gives a lightly bleak yet visually stunning lens to the stark Cold War atmosphere
  • It is bizarre yet surprisingly endearing, as you’re wholly on this guy’s side as he sets out to complete his unorthodox personal mission

Redoubt is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 March 2026

Two Prosecutors (dir. Sergei Loznitsa)

CAST: Aleksandr Kuznetsov, Aleksandr Filippenko, Anatoliy Beliy, Andris Keišs, Vytautas Kaniušonis, Valentin Novopolskij, Dmitrij Denisiuk

CREW: Sergei Loznitsa (director, writer), Kevin Chneiweiss (producer), Christiaan Verbeek (composer), Oleg Mutu (cinematographer), Danielius Kokanauskis (editor)

PLOT: In 1937, as Joseph Stalin carried out his Great Purge throughout the USSR, newly appointed Soviet prosecutor Kornyev (Kuznetsov) discovers a letter from political prisoner Stepniak (Filippenko) that reveals evidence of corruption within the system, but finds himself in danger as he investigates further…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The harsh persecution of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin’s enemies forms the backdrop of a compelling thriller that exposes the compromised nature of the USSR
  • Eastern European filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa carefully constructs an eerie replica of 30s Soviet politics, where nobody can truly be trusted while anyone is always at risk of imprisonment or worse
  • The film competed for the Palme D’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, and came home with the François Chalais Prize which awards films for their dedication to journalistic values
  • Its themes of political corruption and inhumane treatment of anyone deemed to be an enemy are frighteningly relevant today, especially in modern-day Russia and even the United States
  • You’ll be left in stunned silence as you witness just how rotten the entire apple of Stalin’s regime was, right to the very core

Two Prosecutors is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 March 2026

Orwell: 2+2=5 (dir. Raoul Peck)

CAST: Damian Lewis

CREW: Raoul Peck (director, writer, producer), George Chignell, Alex Gibney and Nick Shumaker (producers), Alexi Aigui (composer), Benjamin Bloodwell, Stuart Luck and Julian Schwanitz (cinematographers), Alexandra Strauss (editor)

PLOT: An investigation into how present-day authoritarianism is not too far removed from the political observations of author George Orwell, particularly those within his dystopian novel 1984

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Award-winning documentarian Raoul Peck presents an incredibly bleak yet utterly essential look at our deeply troubled present and how it aligns with particular observations of the past
  • Peck frames his study around the life and works of George Orwell, whose era-defining work remains all too relevant in today’s world
  • Damian Lewis provides narration as Orwell, with the actor reading aloud the author’s personal letters and journals to better explain his inner thoughts
  • Just some of the devastating real-life events being shown over the narration are the Russia-Ukraine War, the January 6th attack on the Capitol, the genocide in Gaza, and the rise of certain authoritarian figures
  • It’s eye-opening in the worst possible way, as it reveals how the world is so entrenched in the very kind of totalitarianism that Orwell warned people about in his day

Orwell: 2+2=5 is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 March 2026

Underland (dir. Rob Petit)

CAST: Bradley Garrett, Sandra Hüller

CREW: Rob Petit (director, writer), Robert Macfarlane (writer), Darren Aronofsky, Lauren Greenwood, Ari Handel and Jessica Harrop (producers), Hannah Peel (composer), Ruben Woodin Dechamps (cinematographer), David G. Hill (editor)

PLOT: A cinematic voyage into the very depths of our planet, uncovering some of the most pristine discoveries beneath the surface…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • David Attenborough has got nothing on the sights you’ll behold as this striking documentary takes viewers deep into a whole world that exists underneath our very feet
  • Filmmaker Rob Petit adapts Robert Macfarlane’s bestselling book of the same name by similarly exploring numerous subterranean realms that offer some unexpected answers to the way our world works
  • Oscar-nominated actor Sandra Hüller narrates the incredibly captured footage of urban explorer Bradley Garrett immersing himself in just some of these amazing new landscapes
  • Darren Aronofsky is also on-board as a producer through his Protozoa Pictures, which given the director’s own visually astounding projects like Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain makes all too much sense
  • It will no doubt inspire viewers to learn more about all the various ecosystems that our planet has to offer, and may even cause some to set out and explore it for themselves

Underland is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 March 2026

Empire of Lies (dir. Matthew Hope)

CAST: Joseph Millson, Natalie Spence

CREW: Matthew Hope (director, writer, producer), Joseph Millson (writer, producer), Elliot Millson (cinematographer), Emma Gaffney (editor)

PLOT: Dave (Millson) is a conspiracy theorist who lives in isolation after being accused of murdering his daughter, but when a young woman (Spence) approaches him for a filmed interview, their conversation turns into a psychological duel…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This suspenseful two-hander is a great showcase for lead actors Joseph Millson and Natalie Spence, as well as filmmaker Matthew Hope
  • Millson, known for roles in Casino Royale and The Last Kingdom, also co-wrote and produced the film alongside Hope, who previously impressed with films like The Veteran and All the Devil’s Men
  • He and Spence engage in a tightly worded battle of wits as they each attempt to delve deep into their extremely complex characters and their dark histories
  • Hope makes effective use of the limited settings as the sense of eternal isolation always hovers over the two leads
  • It’ll leave you gripped as the character study produces some unexpected results while drawing toward a satisfying conclusion

Empire of Lies is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 March 2026

What’s Showing At Home This Week?

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice (dir. BenDavid Grabinski)

CAST: Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, Eiza González, Jimmy Tatro, Keith David, Emily Hampshire, Arturo Castro, Lewis Tan, Ben Schwartz, Stephen Root

CREW: BenDavid Grabinski (director, writer), Andrew Lazar (producer), Joseph Trapanese (composer), Larry Fong (cinematographer), Tim Squyres (editor)

PLOT: Mike (Marsden) and Nick (Vaughn) are two gangsters who along with Alice (González), the woman they separately love, attempt to survive the most dangerous night of their lives – one that happens to involve time-travel…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Filled with style and hilarious time-travel action, this wacky romantic-comedy (with gangsters) is one you’ll want to revisit over and over again
  • Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, Vince Vaughn (again) and Eiza González form a tight quartet as the titular love square caught in a mind-bending series of escapades that get wilder with every turn
  • It’s the second film by writer-director BenDavid Grabinski, who previously came onto the scene with the 2021 comedy-thriller Happily, and whose spec script for this film was quickly picked up by 20th Century Studios
  • Some hugely entertaining action along with some bonkers sci-fi plotting add up to a radical and truly unique movie experience
  • With plenty of laughs to match its physical energy, it’s a film that is worthy of a rewind so you can go through it all once more

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is streaming exclusively on Disney+ from Friday 27 March 2026

Pretty Lethal (dir. Vicky Jewson)

CAST: Lana Condor, Millicent Simmonds, Iris Apatow, Maddie Ziegler, Avantika, Uma Thurman, Michael Culkin

CREW: Vicky Jewson (director), Kate Freund (writer), William Bindley, Mike Karz, David Leitch, Annie Marter, Kelly McCormick and Piers Tempest (producers), Paul Leonard-Morgan (composer), Bridger Nielson (cinematographer), Richard Smither (editor)

PLOT: A small troupe of ballerinas find themselves stranded in a remote forest after their bus breaks down whilst travelling to a prestigious dance competition, but after taking shelter at a mysterious inn run by Devora Kasimer (Thurman), a reclusive former ballet prodigy, the ballerinas soon find themselves fighting for their lives…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Ballet is weaponised in ways never before thought possible in this action-packed and rather suspenseful cinematic ride
  • David Leitch, the former stunt co-ordinator turned prolific filmmaker, produces the film with Vicky Jewson, previously of the Netflix thriller Close, directing it
  • Our central ballet dancers are played by the likes of To All the Boys franchise lead Lana Condor, real-life dancer Maddie Ziegler, and deaf actor Millicent Simmonds of A Quiet Place (a win for disability representation)
  • A devilishly unhinged Uma Thurman proves to be more than a formidable foe for the troupe (she is The Bride, after all!), who utilised their training for much deadlier purposes
  • It’s got fight sequences that’s (presumably) set to some tightly choreographed moves, which makes it the rare film that will please afficionados of both action cinema and classical ballet

Pretty Lethal is streaming exclusively on Prime Video from Wednesday 25 March 2026

What’s Returning to Cinemas This Week?

William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (dir. Baz Luhrmann)

CAST: Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, Brian Dennehy, John Leguizamo, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino, Diane Venora, Christina Pickles, Dash Mihok, Jesse Bradford, Zak Orth, Jamie Kennedy, Vincent Laresca, Carlos Martín Manzo Otálora, Miriam Margolyes, Harold Perrineau, Paul Rudd, Vondie Curtis-Hall, M. Emmet Walsh, Quindon Tarver, Edwina Moore

CREW: Baz Luhrmann (director, writer, producer), Craig Pearce (writer), Gabriella Martinelli (producer), Marius De Vries and Nellee Hooper (composers), Donald M. McAlpine (cinematographer), Jill Bilcock (editor)

PLOT: In modern-day Verona Beach, Romeo Montague (DiCaprio) and Juliet Capulet (Danes) are teenagers from the warring families of the Capulet and Montague business empires who, despite their families’ feud, fall in love with each other…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Baz Luhrmann’s typically stylish take on the classic Shakespearian tragedy returns to the big screen in honour of its 30th anniversary
  • Luhrmann famously updated the story to present day while still retaining the writing style of the original play, playing around with certain phrases (for example, “swords” are now guns)
  • The two title roles proved to be iconic for both Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, the latter becoming a breakout star due to the film’s success – ironically, she later turned down the lead role in Titanic opposite DiCaprio!
  • Though initially met with mixed reception, the film has become a cult classic among audiences, especially Shakespeare die-hards who consider this to be one of the most accomplished film adaptations of this play
  • It’s filled with typical Luhrmann excess, but at its centre is the classic story we all know and love that’s performed passionately and with powerful emotion

William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 March 2026
