What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford (dir. Seán Dunn)

CAST: Peter Mullan, Jakob Oftebro, Gayle Rankin, Sid Sagar, Lewis MacDougall

CREW: Seán Dunn (director, writer), Scott Macaulay, Jennifer Monks and Alex Polunin (producers), Gazelle Twin (composer), David Gallego (cinematographer), Shakti Bhagchandani (editor)

PLOT: In the small Scottish village of Arberloch, widower Kenneth (Mullan) – a descendant of the village’s famed 18th century philosopher Sir Douglas Weatherford – is a tour guide who descends into madness when a big-budget fantasy show begins shooting in the area…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This darkly hilarious debut by writer-director Seán Dunn explores the blurred line between history and fantasy in a unique and sometimes unsettling way
  • Peter Mullan, recently a BAFTA nominee for his turn in I Swear, delivers an exceptional lead performance as the psychologically tormented protagonist who still earns empathy even when doing some rather questionable things
  • It satirises the media’s influence on local culture, such as rural areas of Northern Ireland becoming tourist hotspots after being used as filming locations in Game of Thrones
  • Dunn announces himself as a filmmaker who can juggle varying tones and themes while still retaining control over the ultimate narrative
  • There is some highly amusing, yet occasionally uncomfortable, commentary on cultural heritage that gives this comedy an extra boost of substance amidst the laughter

The Fall of Sir Douglas Weatherford is showing in cinemas from Friday 12 June 2026

Solo Mio (dirs. Charles Kinnane and Daniel Kinnane)

CAST: Kevin James, Alyson Hannigan, Nicole Grimaudo, Kim Coates, Jonathan Roumie, Julee Cerda, Julie Ann Emery, Alessandro Carbonara

CREW: Charles Kinnane and Daniel Kinnane (directors), Kevin James (writer), John Kinnane and Patrick Kinnane (writers), Mark Fasano and Jeffrey Greenstein (producers), Joy Ngiaw (composer), Jared Fadel (cinematographer), Peter Kinnane (editor)

PLOT: After being left at the altar during his wedding in Rome, Matt (James) decides to embark on his planned Italian honeymoon alone, where he immerses himself in the country’s culture and finds true love…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Kevin James headlines and co-writes this charming rom-com which might as well be his very own Eat Pray Love
  • The movie comes from the filmmaking collective known as the Kinnane Brothers, including directors Charles and Daniel (who previously worked with James on the Happy Madison film Home Team), co-writers John and Patrick, and editor Peter
  • Filming took place across Rome, with numerous iconic sights throughout the Italian capital city being incorporated into the heartfelt story
  • Those expecting Paul Blart-esque comedy will be pleasantly surprised by the more sombre and gentler performance that James delivers here, proving he’s far more than his trademark slapstick
  • It may well inspire viewers to set out on their own Italian adventure, and experience the many wonders that the country has to offer

Solo Mio is showing in cinemas from Friday 12 June 2026

Kapodistrias (The Governor) (dir. Yannis Smaragdis)

CAST: Antonis Myriagos, Finbar Lynch, Nikorestis Chaniotakis, Pavlos Kourtidis, Sean James Sutton, Konstadinos Danikas, Errika Bigiou, Giorgos Floratos

CREW: Yannis Smaragdis (director, writer, producer), Gabriel Popescu (producer), Minos Matsas (composer), Aris Stavrou (cinematographer), Stella Filippopoulou (editor)

PLOT: In 19th century Greece, diplomat Ioannis Kapodistrias (Myriagos) is elected as the country’s first Governor and introduces policies that would ultimately transform its economy and policies…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • A major figure in Greek history, considered to be the architect of the country’s modern state, is given the epic biopic treatment
  • Internationally acclaimed filmmaker Yannis Smaragdis brings an expansive sense of scope to his titular figure’s rise to political prominence
  • As portrayed by Antonis Myriagos, the character of Ioannis Kapodistrias is portrayed with great respect while also showing some of his more flawed moments as both a politician and as a human being
  • The historic attention to detail is sublime, especially in sequences that take full advantage of the striking Greek locations
  • It’s a good old-fashioned epic that finally gives Greece a chance to shine on the international blockbuster stage

Kapodistrias (The Governor) is showing in cinemas from Friday 12 June 2026

Time and Water (dir. Sara Dosa)

CAST: Andri Snær Magnason

CREW: Sara Dosa (director, writer, producer), Erin Casper and Jocelyne Chaput (writers, editors), Andri Snær Magnason (writer), Jameka Autry, Shane Boris and Elijah Stevens (producers), Dan Deacon (composer), Pablo Alvaez-Mesa (cinematographer), Mark Harrison (editors)

PLOT: Icelandic poet and author Andri Snær Magnason constructs a cinematic time capsule consisting of family memories, melting glaciers, and the general flow of time…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Experience the heartfelt journey to preserve, even if just on film, the world as we know it right now for the sake of future generations
  • Oscar-nominated documentarian Sara Dosa, who previously made Fire of Love, follows Icelandic writer Andri Snær Magnason on his increasingly time-sensitive mission
  • The writer takes viewers through many items within his personal archive, which includes old photographs of his relatives and even some traditional songs and stories from his native country
  • Dosa frames it as both a deeply personal character study, and as an urgent cry for help as the world begins to crumble beyond repair
  • It’s a striking reflection on what it is to be alive at a great time of change, as well as a universal celebration of what we currently have among our personal treasures

Time and Water is showing in cinemas from Friday 12 June 2026

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Mexico’s first-ever fully stop-motion animated feature is an imaginative and wondrous creation for all to enjoy
  • The film is a prequel to the hit television series Frankelda’s Book of Spooks, which has drawn comparisons to everything from Tales from the Crypt to the gothic stylings of Tim Burton
  • It was originally conceived as a half-hour television special, but after the script transformed into a full-length feature, filmmaker brothers Arturo and Rodolfo Ambriz ended up funding most of the production themselves
  • Luckily, they had help with Guillermo del Toro coming on board as a mentor figure, with the Oscar-winning auteur helping to fine-tune the product before its theatrical release in Mexico
  • Having received high acclaim among critics and audiences in its home country, it’s bound to become an international favourite among animation enthusiasts everywhere

I Am Frankelda is streaming exclusively on Netflix from Friday 12 June 2026

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Jason Segal and Samara Weaving are a couple at each other’s throats in this darkly humorous action-comedy that will have you wincing as well as laughing
  • Director Jorma Taccone (of The Lonely Island fame) remakes Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola’s 2021 film The Trip, which featured Noomi Rapace in the role that Weaving now occupies
  • There are some memorable turns from not just Segal and Weaving, but also the likes of Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis and André Eriksen, who also had a role in the original film
  • Following its debut at SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, it came away with the public-picked Headliner Audience Award over fellow headline attractions like Ready or Not 2: Here I Come and Boots Riley’s upcoming I Love Boosters
  • Its grim martial issues are enough to rival The War of the Roses or even and Mrs. Smith, though with perhaps a bit more unpredictability to its name

Over Your Dead Body is streaming exclusively on Prime Video from Wednesday 10 June 2026

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Paul Thomas Anderson’s legendary porn epic is back to raise eyebrows (among other things) on the big screen with an all-new 4K restoration
  • It was the auteur’s second feature after his breakout debut Hard Eight, with it being based on a mockumentary short film he made in school that was itself inspired by iconic porn actor John Holmes
  • The expansive ensemble is led by Mark Wahlberg who earned acclaim and respect as a dramatic actor, while also being backed up by the likes of Don Cheadle, Heather Graham, Julianne Moore and the late Burt Reynolds (the latter two earning Oscar nominations for their performances in this film)
  • The film became an instant critical and commercial success, establishing Anderson as a provocative filmmaker with a unique and daring vision
  • Now that he’s finally won his long-overdue Oscars for One Battle After Another, anyone looking to do a PTA career retrospective will find this to be a great starting point (though don’t overlook the underrated Hard Eight!)

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Baz Luhrmann’s toe-tapping directorial debut leaps back into cinemas with an all-new 4K restoration
  • The concept stemmed from a critically acclaimed stage play set up by Luhrmann who, when presented with plans to adapt it into a feature film, insisted on directing as he did the original production
  • It quickly became an international breakout hit, earning far beyond its A$3million budget at the box office and going on to win the coveted People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, as well as gain numerous BAFTA nominations including Best Film
  • Most famously, at least to UK audiences, the title would go on to inspire the popular ongoing dance competition series Strictly Come Dancing (better known to international viewers as Dancing with the Stars)
  • It’ll put a serious kick in your step when you experience the uplifting feeling of dancing on your own terms on the big screen
