This Week’s Movie Menu (12 – 18 October 2026)

Step into the arena of new film releases and pick your player to, erm, play at your leisure, with the big one this week being an all-new take on a classic video game series…

Movie of the Week

Street Fighter (dir. Kitao Sakurai)

CAST: Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Callina Liang, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, Andrew Schulz, Eric André, Vidyut Jammwal, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Jason Momoa, Orville Peck, Olivier Richters, Hirooki Goto, Mel Jamson, Rayna Vallandingham, Alexander Volkanovski, Kyle Mooney

CREW: Kitao Sakurai (director, writer), T.J. Fixman (writer), Cale Boyter, Stefan Makhoul, Jason Momoa, Takayuki Nakayama and Mary Parent (producers), Ken Seng (cinematographer), Luke Lynch and James Thomas (editors)

PLOT: In an alternate 1993, where highly-skilled fighters compete in the World Warrior Tournament as overseen by the authoritarian M. Bison (Dastmalchian), estranged friends and former street fighters Ken Masters (Centineo) and Ryu (Koji) are recruited by the mysterious Chun-Li (Liang) for a plot to take down Bison and his sinister plot…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Now that we’ve had not one but two Mortal Kombat movie reboots, it’s only fair that its biggest rival – the Capcom fighting series of the same name – gets its chance to shine again on the big screen
  • Director and co-writer Kitao Sakurai, a frequent collaborator with comedian Eric André (who also pops up here), brings to life a faithful vision of the game’s vast dystopian world and its many memorable characters
  • Just some of the actors playing such characters are Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, and David Dastmalchian as the villainous M. Bison
  • On top of the thrilling and borderline cartoonish fight sequences, the film carries a knowing sense of humour throughout that pays respectful homage to the games and their campy history
  • As Mortal Kombat II was earlier this year, it’s a love letter to the games while also working as a fun and mindless blockbuster that anyone can easily watch and enjoy

Street Fighter is showing in cinemas from Friday 16 October 2026

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

CREW: Brian Duffield (director, writer, producer), Daniel Kraus (writer), Jeb Brody, Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum (producers), Joseph Trapanese (composer), Aaron Morton (cinematographer), Pietro Scalia (editor)

PLOT: Jay Gardiner (Abrams), a young scuba diver searching for the remains of his father Mitt (Brolin) in the ocean, is swallowed by a giant sperm whale and finds himself with just an hour to try and escape…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • If you’ve ever wanted to know what it’d be like to be swallowed by a whale, this intense survival thriller will give you exactly what you were weirdly looking for
  • Brian Duffield, the screenwriter behind recent cult hits like The Babysitter, Love and Monsters and No One Will Save You, directs and co-writes the high-scale adaptation of Daniel Kraus’s novel of the same name
  • Fresh from running for his life in the recent Resident Evil, Austin Abrams is stuck in yet another life-threatening situation and manages to carry the film with his effortlessly terrified performance
  • Some realistic effects create the claustrophobic interiors of this giant whale, where it’s not just digestion that’s the only threat our hero is facing
  • With its wild premise, this is sure to be a survival movie unlike any other – and may even make you a bit hungry like the whale is!

Whalefall is showing in cinemas from Friday 16 October 2026

Forgotten Island (dirs. Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado)

CAST: H.E.R., Liza Soberano, Dave Franco, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy, Ronny Chieng, Lea Salonga, Kevin McCann, Amielynn Abellera, Sophia Laforteza

CREW: Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado (directors, writers), Mark Swift (producer), Nathan Matthew David (composer), James Ryan (editor)

PLOT: In the Philippines during the 1990s, childhood friends Jo (H.E.R.) and Raissa (Soberano) are struggling to maintain their bond as Raissa prepares to move to the United States for college, when they are suddenly transported to the mystical island of Nakali where they find their memories of one another fading the longer that they remain there…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • DreamWorks Animation’s latest family feature contains some of their stylish visuals and most mature storytelling yet
  • It heavily embraces the Philippine culture and mythology for an original story that is universally identifiable for friends of all types
  • The film is the brainchild of writer-directors Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, who previously scored an Oscar nomination for their dazzling work on Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
  • As in that film, there is some truly awe-inspiring animation that combines CG and 2D visuals to create a wholly unique aesthetic that makes it consistently wondrous to look at
  • With all that and a stacked voice cast that includes Filipino talent like Liza Soberano, Manny Jacinto and Dolly de Leon, as well as Dave Franco and Oscar-winning musician H.E.R., this is a gorgeously animated adventure that everyone can enjoy

Forgotten Island is showing in cinemas from Friday 16 October 2026

NAZA (dirs. Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor)

CAST: Yuval Abraham

CREW: Rachel Szor (director, writer, cinematographer, editor), Yuval Abraham (director, writer, editor), Harry Davies, Lindsay Poulton and James Wilson (producers)

PLOT: Filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor investigate the systemic automated targeting of civilians in war-torn Gaza by Israeli forces…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The makers of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land return with a bold and brave exposé of the inhumanity that has fuelled the ongoing war and genocide in Gaza
  • Co-directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor shot the film in secret at nighttime on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, where numerous IDF soldiers reveal some devastating secrets of their country’s attack on Palestinian people
  • As more is revealed, from the implementation of AI technology to randomised attack coordination, we see just how little regard for innocent lives that certain sides of the conflict have, leaving you more devastated and angry than before
  • The film was awarded the Special Jury Prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival, where it also received a record 25-minute standing ovation from audiences, as well as widespread criticism throughout Israel’s government, to where bills were introduced to revoke the filmmakers’ citizenship
  • It’s essential viewing, not just as a fantastic and timely documentary but also for anyone who is thoroughly against the horrific actions unfolding right now in the Middle East

NAZA is showing in cinemas from Friday 16 October 2026

Case 137 (dir. Dominik Moll)

CAST: Léa Drucker, Jonathan Turnbull, Mathilde Roehrich, Guslagie Malanda, Stanislas Merhar, Sandra Colombo, Valentin Campagne, Mathilde Riu, Côme Péronnet, Solàn Machado-Graner, Théo Costa-Marini, Théo Navarro-Mussy, Florence Viala

CREW: Dominik Moll (director, writer), Gilles Marchand (writer), Caroline Benjo, Barbara Letellier and Carole Scotta (producers), Olivier Marguerit (composer), Patrick Ghiringhelli (cinematographer), Laurent Rouan (editor)

PLOT: During a series of mass protests in Paris, a young teenager is critically injured by a police weapon, which leads internal affairs investigator Stéphanie (Drucker) on a fact-finding mission to uncover the truth, only to find herself blocked by institutional intimidation and pressure, especially when the case becomes increasingly personal for her…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This gritty French crime thriller explores the unstable morality of law enforcement that is meant to protect civilians and not endanger them
  • Léa Drucker, of Lukas Dohont’s Oscar-nominated Close among numerous other outstanding roles, leads the charge as a meticulous investigator with a heart of gold
  • There are disturbing displays of police brutality and corruption that show plain as day how the legal system has become deeply eroded over time
  • It competed for the Palme D’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and scored numerous nominations at France’s Cesar and Lumiere Awards, winning one at the latter for Best Actress
  • Fans of police procedurals will find themselves engrossed in the intricate and heavily detailed facts that filmmaker Dominik Moll presents to his audience

Case 137 is showing in cinemas from Friday 16 October 2026

Winter of the Crow (dir. Kasia Adamik)

CAST: Lesley Manville, Tom Burke, Zofia Wichłacz, Andrzej Konopka, Melissa Dalton, Rhianne Barreto, Jakub Guszkowski, Miron Jagniewski, Sascha Ley, Magdalena Smalara

CREW: Kasia Adamik (director, writer), Sandra Buchta and Lucinda Coxon (writers), Olga Chajdas, Stanislaw Dziedzic, Katarzyna Ozga, Nicolas Steil and Sam Taylor (producers), Emre Sevinsik (composer), Tomasz Naumiuk (cinematographer), Andonis Trattos (editor)

PLOT: In 1981 Poland, Dr Joan Andrews (Manville) is a visiting academic who finds herself in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse when the country enters martial law…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The Cold War has never felt more chilling – both literally and figuratively – than in this tense wintery historical thriller where nothing is guaranteed
  • Oscar-nominee Lesley Manville is splendid as an ordinary woman who’s unexpectedly thrust into an extraordinary situation
  • The harsh and bleak cinematography recreates the barren Soviet wasteland of early 80s Poland, when the country’s communist government enforced a strict crackdown on oppression of all sorts
  • It’s the perfect setting for an unpredictable conspiracy mystery where the fate of the war could rest in the hands of an unlikely player
  • Viewers will certainly want to at the very least put on a light jacket to warm themselves up after experiencing a film that makes the European nation feel especially cold

Winter of the Crow is showing in cinemas from Friday 16 October 2026

The Influencer Project (dir. Mike Nybroe)

CAST: Chiara King, Luca Storm, Mike Nybroe, Jazmine Summer, Alexandre Willaume

CREW: Mike Nybroe (director, writer, producer), Anders Jon (writer, editor), Lars Andreas Pedersen (writer), Gregg Hale, Alex Hertzberg, Eduardo Sánchez and Ahmet Zappa (producers), Daniel Parmo (cinematographer)

PLOT: Popular influencer Chiara King (as herself) travels to Copenhagen with a documentary crew filming her every move, but the trip becomes a nightmare when Chiara finds herself stalked and harassed by an unknown online threat…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This unsettling horror-thriller takes a dark look at the price of online notoriety in a situation where there is no true escape from everyone’s eyes
  • Chiara King, the social media personality and content creator with millions of followers to her name, plays a fictionalised version of herself and puts in a compelling lead performance
  • The faux-documentary style makes the sinister elements feel so much more real, especially when you take into account that it’s produced by Eduardo Sánchez, who co-wrote and co-directed the OG found-footage horror The Blair Witch Project
  • Through King’s terrifying on-screen journey, debut filmmaker Mike Nybroe manages to create an alarming statement on the ever-surveillant nature of social media
  • It’ll terrify anyone who, like King, has had experience with online predators among their millions of admirers, as well as those who may not even have social media accounts themselves!

The Influencer Project is showing in cinemas from Friday 16 October 2026

By Design (dir. Amanada Kramer)

CAST: Juliette Lewis, Mamoudou Athie, Melanie Griffith, Samantha Mathis, Robin Tunney, Udo Kier, Clifton Collins Jr., Betty Buckley, Alisa Tores, Keir Gilchrist, Bridey Elliott, Sophie von Haselberg, Madison McKinley, Miranda Bailey, Cristo Montt, Greer Cohen, Jessie-Ann Kohlman, Ruby Cruz, Michelle Farrah, Jim Chapa, Cricket Arrison

CREW: Amanda Kramer (director, writer, producer), Jacob Agger, Miranda Bailey, Natalie Whalen and Sarah Winshall (producers), Giulio Carmassi and Bryan Scary (composers), Patrick Meade Jones (cinematographer), Benjamin Shearn (editor)

PLOT: Camille (Lewis) becomes fascinated by a showroom chair and suddenly finds herself in the chair’s body where she is pursued by minimalist bachelor Oliver (Athie), while the chair in Camille’s body experiences a whole new life…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • In what is perhaps the strangest body-swap movie ever made, Juliette Lewis trades places with an inanimate chair – yes, really!
  • That’s the central concept of filmmaker Amanda Kramer’s surreal and deeply absurdist fable which tackles female objectification and interiority with stunningly deadpan humour
  • Lewis is joined by many supporting faces like Mamoudou Athie, Robin Tunney, Clifton Collins Jr., the late Udo Kier, and Melanie Griffith whose monotone vocals make her the perfect narrator for this movie
  • Beneath the weirdness is a smart and contemplative commentary focused on how easy it is to treat people, especially women, as though they were mere props instead of actual people
  • The out-there premise may not be for everyone, but there’s plenty of oddball charm to be won over by in a film that is, by design (see what we did there?), unlike anything you’ve ever seen

By Design is showing in cinemas from Friday 16 October 2026

It’s My Time (dir. Bai Xue)

CAST: Michelle Yeoh, Haoran Liu, Rina Sa, Nicole Crewe, White-K, Tongsheng Han, Xi Qi, Yang Liu, Qiming Jiang, Jing Jin, Ken Wu, Yao Huang, Halin Chen

CREW: Bai Xue (director, writer), Yan Sun and Yizhou Xu (writers), Bin He and Mingyi Liu (producers), Huang Chao and Gao Xiaoyang (composers), Da Jiang (cinematographer), Huang Shang (editor)

PLOT: Zhao Yanhong (Yeoh) is a rebellious nursing home resident who strikes a bond with young magic-cube champion Wu Youwei (Liu), who teaches her all she needs to know before she enters the World Cubing Championship…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Hollywood superstar Michelle Yeoh, fresh from her Oscar-winning turn in Everything Everywhere All at Once and appearances in the two-part Wicked adaptation, returns to her Asian cinema roots for a winning sports comedy
  • Yeoh reportedly spent two years mastering the classic Rubik’s Cube in preparation for her role as an unlikely potential speed-cubing champion
  • She’s under the direction of filmmaker Bai Xue, who returns with her first movie in seven years after her debut feature The Crossing
  • Beyond the cube solving is a sweet story of friendship between a cantankerous elder and a humbled young slacker, the latter played by Haoran Liu of the Detective Chinatown series
  • Whether you’re coming for Yeoh or for the feel-good sports formula, you’ll get plenty of entertainment value for your money

It’s My Time is showing in cinemas from Friday 16 October 2026

What’s Showing At Home This Week?

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The inspiring true story of the climbers who made history is retold in a breathtaking historical drama that shows the perilous attempt in all its glory
  • While Tom Hiddleston and Willem Dafoe provide reliable A-list support, the film truly belongs to Chinese-Tibetan actor Genden Phuntsok who portrays the titular Sherpa mountaineer
  • It also marks the narrative feature debut of director Jennifer Peedom, who previously specialised in making documentaries like River and Deeper about some of the world’s most striking natural environments
  • You’ll feel more than just a light chill as Peedom puts you right alongside Phuntsok and Hiddleston for the dangerous journey across the largest mountain on the planet
  • If you’re after a feel-good movie showing what the human spirit can accomplish when pushed to its extreme limits, this will definitely make it worth the climb!

Love of Your Life (dir. Rachel Morrison)

CAST: Margaret Qualley, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Aaron Pierre, Gabriel Basso, Catherine Keener, Tamara Lawrence, Corey Johnson

CREW: Rachel Morrison (director), Julia Cox (writer), Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson (producers), Dustin O’Halloran (composer), Todd Benhazl (cinematographer), Jennifer Vecchiarello (editor)

PLOT: Maya (Qualley) has a chance encounter with Charlie (Basso) which ignites a sweeping romance and a future she never could have imagined, but when that future is abruptly taken away from her, she discovers a brand-new life for herself…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Fresh from her boxing biopic The Fire Inside, cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Rachel Morrison turns her talents toward this powerful romantic drama
  • Morrison has assembled a fine-as-hell cast that includes Margaret Qualley, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Lanterns star Aaron Pierre and Oscar-nominee Catherine Keener
  • As if that wasn’t enough star power, among the producers is none other than Ryan Gosling, whose new production company General Admission has struck a first-look film deal with Amazon MGM Studios that includes this film
  • The story by screenwriter Julia Cox is filled with love, charm, heartbreak and self-reliance, just some of the many ingredients that have been proven to make a formidable modern romance
  • It will sweep viewers off their feet with the attention and care given to these characters, the emotional narrative, and the overall vibes that are utterly irresistible

Masterplan (dir. Thomas Vincent)

CAST: Stanley Tucci, Victor Belmondo, Simona Tabasco

CREW: Thomas Vincent (director, writer), David Wolstencroft (writer), Marco Rosi (producer), Polérik Rouvière (composer), Matteo Cocco (cinematographer), Nathalie Cheron (editor)

PLOT: After escaping from prison, a legendary thief (Tucci) recruits Italian cybercrime expert Chiara (Tabasco) and French explosives specialist (Belmondo) for a daring heist involving the Mona Lisa – only for the thief to reveal that his new accomplices are actually long-lost siblings, and that he is their father…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The newest heist caper to break its way onto your screens is not just a rip-roaring adventure but also a surprisingly sweet family affair
  • It is the first Franco-Italian production to be made under Amazon’s umbrella, with Reacher and Role Play director Thomas Vincent combining both cultures for an English-language delight
  • Staney Tucci is the headline act, but he is matched by White Lotus breakout Simona Tabasco and rising French talent Victor Belmondo as his on-screen offspring
  • Their combined charisma and screen presence, as well as their unexpected familial bond, carries the usual exciting heist movie tropes which are given a whole new boost of life
  • It may not initially seem as cool as Ocean’s Eleven, but this is one heist movie that gets the job done while also flaunting its own eccentric style

Masterplan is streaming exclusively on Prime Video from Friday 16 October 2026

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The creepy-as-hell supernatural chiller that terrified audiences 25 years ago is back on the big screen to mark its quarter-century anniversary
  • Nicole Kidman is stunning in a lead role that landed her various nominations for Best Actress, including at the BAFTAs and Golden Globes (her ex-husband Tom Cruise is also an executive producer on the film)
  • It was written and directed by Alejandro Amenábar, who incorporated an unnerving dark atmosphere to a ghost story that struck a chord with many viewers at the time
  • The film is also perhaps best known for a twist ending – no spoilers here! – that is genuinely shocking, and flips the entire thing in all sorts of directions that make it even more satisfying
  • It’s highly recommended if you’re after an effective ghost story that gives you everything from otherworldly scares to compelling performances and filmmaking

  • In addition to Lee, the cast is stacked with British acting thespians including Peter Cushing, Michael Gough, Charles Lloyd-Pack and many more
  • The film’s critical and financial success helped launch the popularity of Hammer Horror, as well as a further eight sequels (seven of which featured Lee reprising his titular role)
  • Today, it is revered as one of the most popular screen renditions of Bram Stoker’s timeless Gothic novel, and one of the most beloved adaptations of that book in general
  • It’s a must-watch for horror fans who are up for a classic story told in an equally classic and frightfully entertaining way

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This lovely little gem from Studio Ghibli, adapted from Mary Norton’s book series The Borrowers, is coming to IMAX screens for the very first time
  • Hayao Miyazaki co-wrote the script for director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who at the time was the youngest director at the Japanese animation studio (he would later direct the Oscar-nominated When Marnie Was There)
  • Among the English voice cast is heavy-hitting talent like Saoirse Ronan, Olivia Colman, Mark Strong, and a young Tom Holland who made his film debut here
  • While not as popular as the likes of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, the film received healthy critical feedback and a modest box office intake
  • It’s a gentle, sweet-natured and highly imaginative film that fits extremely well into Studio Ghibli’s highly artistic library of hits
