This Week’s Movie Menu (21 – 27 April 2025)

By our calculations, this week is set to be an absolutely jam-packed one with plenty of new releases to get excited for, including long-awaited action sequels, time-resetting video game adaptations, violent crime thrillers, and a modern Jane Austen classic…

Movie of the Week

The Accountant 2 (dir. Gavin O’Connor)

CAST: Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda, Allison Robertson, J.K. Simmons, Robert Morgan, Grant Harvey, Andrew Holland

CREW: Gavin O’Connor (director), Bill Dubuque (writer), Ben Affleck, Lynette Howell Taylor and Mark Williams (producers), Bryce Dessner (composer), Seamus McGarvey (cinematographer), Richard Pearson (editor)

PLOT: After years of living off the grid, autistic criminal accountant Christian Wolff (Affleck) is contacted by Treasury agent Marybeth Medina (Addai-Robinson) to solve the murder of her former boss, Raymond King (Simmons). He soon approaches his estranged brother Braxton (Bernthal), a lethal hitman, for help on the case, but the two soon find themselves targeted by powerful killers…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The long-awaited sequel to the hit 2016 action-thriller sees Ben Affleck reprise one of his most intriguing recent roles
  • Affleck also reunites with director Gavin O’Connor and writer Bill Dubuque for the follow-up, as well as with co-star Jon Bernthal who has a much bigger role this time
  • The actors’ chemistry gives a surprisingly lighter tone compared to the dourer original film, which makes it more enjoyable for audiences put off by some of the coldness last time
  • Plenty of action and suspense also helps to keep it afloat, with early reviews suggesting it’s even more of a rollercoaster than before
  • Should the film do well with audiences, it’s likely that we won’t have to wait nearly another decade for a potential third entry

The Accountant 2 is showing in cinemas from Friday 25 April 2025

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

Until Dawn (dir. David F. Sandberg)

The group soon learns that they are in a time-loop that resets with a different killer, and that to survive they need to make it until dawn…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The hit interactive video game series gets a movie adaptation that somehow doesn’t betray the inventive spirit of the source material
  • Shazam! director David F. Sandberg reunites with his Annabelle: Creation writer Gary Dauberman to rework the game’s unique gameplay into a narrative that expands upon the series’ lore
  • Each reset is rumoured to invoke the style of several different horror genres, which could also make it an interesting love letter to horror as a whole
  • The young cast – and Peter Stormare, in a homage to his original role in the game – encounter numerous deadly foes that get more terrifying as they go along
  • Those sceptic of a video game like Until Dawn working on the big screen will be reassured by its bold decisions that help it translate better than anyone could have predicted

Until Dawn is showing in cinemas from Friday 25 April 2025

The Friend (dirs. Scott McGehee and David Siegel)

CAST: Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, Sarah Pidgeon, Constance Wu, Ann Dowd, Noma Dumezweni, Felix Solis, Owen Teague, Carla Gugino, Gina Costigan, Josh Pais

CREW: Scott McGehee and David Siegel (directors, writers, producers), Liza Chasin and Mike Spreter (producers), Trevor Gureckis and Jay Wadley (composers), Giles Nuttgens (cinematographer), Isaac Hagy (editor)

PLOT: Iris (Watts), a writer living in New York, is unexpectedly bequeathed by her late friend and mentor Walter (Murray) his Great Dane dog Apollo, even though she is not allowed to have pets in her apartment building. As she struggles to find Apollo a new home, she soon forms an unbreakable bond with the dog…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The most lovable Great Dane since Scooby-Doo is the main attraction of this heartwarming comedy-drama about friendship and healing
  • Filmmakers Scott McGehee and David Siegel adapt Sigrid Nunez’s award-winning semiautobiographical novel of the same name, which last year charted on the New York Times’s list of best 100 books of the 21st century so far
  • The human cast includes Oscar-nominees Naomi Watts and Bill Murray, who bring warmth and unexpected humour to tender arcs that may have you reaching for the tissues
  • It’s gotten extremely high praise since debuting at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, with critics highlighting the genuine drama and the scene-stealing antics of the central dog
  • Those looking for a sweet-natured and deeply emotional drama with its own adorable canine will get plenty of that and more from this film

The Friend is showing in cinemas from Friday 25 April 2025

Julie Keeps Quiet (dir. Leonardo Van Dijl)

CAST: Tessa Van den Broeck, Ruth Becquart, Koen De Bouw, Claire Bodson, Laurent Caron

CREW: Leonardo Van Dijl (director, writer), Ruth Becquart (writer), Gilles Coulier, Gilles De Schryver, Wouter Sap, Roxanne Sarkozi and Delphine Tomson (producers), Caroline Shaw (composer), Nicolas Karakatsanis (cinematographer), Bert Jacobs (editor)

PLOT: Julie (Van den Broeck) is a promising young champion at a prestigious tennis academy, but after her coach Jérémy (Caron) is placed under suspicion following the suicide of a fellow player, the students are encouraged to come forward about their experiences with the disgraced coach – except for Julie, who decides to remain silent…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This powerful Belgian drama takes a sobering look at the harsh realities of control and abuse in a post-#MeToo world
  • Writer-director Leonardo Van Dijl makes a surprisingly tense feature debut where the drama comes from what isn’t necessarily shown or said, adding to the complexity of the situation
  • It features a striking lead turn by Tessa Van den Broeck, who like her character is also a highly skilled young tennis prodigy who has already competed in several international tournaments
  • Following its successful debut at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, the film was picked to be Belgium’s entry for the International Feature Film Oscar, though it ultimately wasn’t nominated
  • Viewers will be compelled as well as haunted by the drama that should hit home for a lot of people, whether they’re in tennis or in any other industry

Julie Keeps Quiet is showing in cinemas from Friday 25 April 2025

The Ugly Stepsister (dir. Emilie Blichfeldt)

CAST: Lea Myren, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, Ane Dahl Torp, Flo Fagerli, Isac Calmroth, Malte Gårdinger, Ralph Carlsson, Isac Aspberg, Albin Weidenbladh, Oksana Czerkasyna, Katarzyna Herman, Adam Lundgren, Willy Ramnek Petri, Cecilia Forss

CREW: Emilie Blichfeldt (director, writer), Maria Ekerhovd (producer), John Erik Kaada (composer), Marcel Zyskind (cinematographer), Olivia Neergaard-Holm (editor)

PLOT: In 19th century Norway, Elvira (Myren) is a young woman who is forced to compete with her more attractive stepsister Agnes (Næss) for the attention of handsome Prince Julian (Calmroth), which soon drives her to more and more extreme measures…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Coming hot off the heels of The Substance is a shocking new body-horror take on the classic fairy tale of Cinderella
  • The Norwegian dark comedy marks the magnetic feature debut of writer-director Emilie Blichfeldt, as well as lead actor Lea Myren in a role that goes to some messed-up places
  • To give you an idea of how sick and twisted the film is, there were reports of an audience member throwing up during its Sundance premiere – which is as promising as it is gross
  • Its provocative themes on impossible beauty standards are presented in a different fashion to last year’s Oscar-winning runaway hit, but are no less timely and relevant to anyone in this image-obsessed age
  • You’ll come away never looking at the fairy tale in quite the same way, which is saying something because there are things in that original story that are already quite disturbing (and wisely nixed from the Disney versions)!

The Ugly Stepsister is showing in cinemas from Friday 25 April 2025

April (dir. Dea Kulumbegashvili)

CAST: Ia Sukhitashvili, Kakha Kintsurashvili, Merab Ninidze, Roza Kancheishvili, Ana Nikolava, David Beradze, Sandro Kalandadze, Tosia Doloiani, Beka Songhulashvili

CREW: Dea Kulumbegashvili (director, writer), Ilan Amouyal, Archil Gelovani, Luca Guadagnino, Francesco Melzi d’Eril, Gabriele Moratti, Alexandra Rossi and David Zerat (producers), Matthew Herbert (composer), Arseni Khachaturan (cinematographer), Jacopo Ramella Pajrin (editor)

PLOT: After she becomes involved in a tragedy at a Georgian maternity hospital, skilled obstetrician Nina (Sukhitashvili) faces an inquiry that threatens to reveal her other secret job: driving to the homes of pregnant young women and performing unsanctioned abortions…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The provocative second feature from Georgian filmmaker Dea Kulumbegashvili is a striking look at a controversial underworld of female autonomy
  • Kulumbegashvili reunites with actors Ia Sukhitashvili and Kakha Kintsurashvili, who worked on her similarly compelling 2020 debut Beginning
  • Among the film’s producers is none other than Luca Guadagnino, who also lends his Bones and All cinematographer Arseni Khachaturan to provide the film’s luscious visuals
  • It was awarded the Special Jury Prize at last year’s Venice Film Festival, where it also competed for the Golden Lion award
  • As challenging as its themes and depictions may be, it’s an important film to watch for anyone who’s even the least bit sympathetic to the unethical lack of resources for women’s health in Europe

April is showing in cinemas from Friday 25 April 2025

Cloud (dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa)

CAST: Masaki Suda, Kotone Furukawa, Daiken Okudaira, Amane Okayama, Yoshiyoshi Arakawa, Masataka Kubota, Yutaka Matsushige, Masaaki Akahori, Maho Yamada, Mutsuo Yoshioka, Yusei Mikawa, Toshihiro Yagi, Yoshiyuki Morishita, Tetsua Chiba

PLOT: In Japan, Ryosuke Yoshii (Suda) is a young man who makes a living reselling unwanted goods on the Internet, but soon he becomes drawn into a series of mysterious and dangerous events…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The latest film from Japanese auteur Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a thrilling psychological adventure into the darkest pits of humanity
  • It features a compelling central performance from Japan acting and singing sensation Masaki Suda, who plays against type in a film that pushes the performer to his limits
  • The movie received a warm reception at international film festivals like Venice and Toronto, and was even submitted as Japan’s official entry for the International Feature Film Oscar, though it wasn’t nominated
  • In typical Kurosawa fashion, there are twists and turns that will break your brain, as well as bursts of violence that recall the filmmaker’s earlier horror work such as Pulse and Cure
  • You can bet on it becoming a cult favourite among lovers of Japanese cinemas, as well as admirers of tense psychological thrillers in general

Cloud is showing in cinemas from Friday 25 April 2025

Treading Water (dir. Gino Evans)

CAST: Joe Gill, Becky Bowe, Darren Connolly, Darryl Clark, Jo Dakin, Eliane Hawley, Christine Dalby, Vincent Davies, Leah Salmon, Tahlia Cherry, Thomas Ende, Ben Toye, Christine Barton-Brown, Wendy Patterson, Barney Thompson, Mike Hilton, David Males, Gemma Louise Nuttall, Junior Akinola, Keane Sudworth, Umar Ali

PLOT: After being released from prison, Danny (Gill) attempts to keep his addiction and mental health under control, but a chance encounter with old schoolmate Laura (Bowe) soon sends him into a pit of tragic obsession…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This compassionate British drama tackles some heavy issues that need to be talked about more in general society
  • Writer-director Gino Evans makes a heartfelt filmmaking debut that is tough to stomach in parts, but always has its heart in the right place
  • Joe Gill and Becky Bowe give a pair of excellent lead performances amidst the backdrop of a chilly Manchester setting
  • Anyone struggling with mental health and substance addiction can recognise the deeply layered mannerisms that the film carefully replicates to emotional effect
  • With its tender narrative and empathetic filmmaking, it’s the kind of movie that we need a lot more of, especially within independent cinema

Treading Water is showing in cinemas from Friday 25 April 2025

An Army of Women (dir. Julie Lunde Lillesæter)

CAST: “Amy Smith,” Marina Garrett, Hanna Senko, Jenny Ecklund, Elizabeth Myers, Margaret Moore

CREW: Julie Lunde Lillesæter (director, producer, cinematographer), Arne Dahr and Natalya Sarch (producers), Therese Aune (composer), Mathias Askeland and Trude Lirhus (editor)

PLOT: In Austin, Texas, the cases of three women who have experienced sexual assault are dismissed, leading them to join a class-action lawsuit against the local authorities that brings about much-needed changes to the law…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The power of unity, especially among women, is evident in this inspiring legal documentary about those who brought about real change in today’s modern world
  • Its focus is on three women including anonymous plaintiff “Amy Smith” who, despite suffering traumatic sexual violence, are badly let down by the justice system
  • Their efforts to challenge the governing forces directly are captured by Norwegian filmmaker Julie Lunde Lillesæter, who gives the involved women their own chance to have their voices heard
  • The documentarian also takes a hard look at the borderline criminal mishandling of sexual assault cases which, until the resulting action, are relatively shocking in today’s society
  • It is a powerful reminder that change can be brought about, especially in these stubborn political times, if people are actually willing to band together and make their case with force

An Army of Women is showing in cinemas from Friday 25 April 2025

  • Tom Hardy both stars and produces the film, in which he engages in some extremely violent set-pieces that are among the most gnarly and spectacularly choreographed in modern action cinema
  • The film was shot all the way back in 2021, but years of reshoots caused the film to experience heavy delays – but the end result was surely worth it!

  • With violence aplenty and some masterful action filmmaking always on display, it’s set to become a new favourite among genre afficionados everywhere

  • A much more complex plan is put into motion that makes effective use of several European locations, including the Canary Islands and parts of the UK
  • Expect more thrilling action as friendships are betrayed, plans go awry, and lots of gunfire is fired upon our outlaw anti-heroes
  • Like the first film, it’s a fun heist caper that gets plenty of cinematic enjoyment out of its increasingly heightened plot and setting

Den of Thieves: Pantera is streaming exclusively on Prime Video from Friday 25 April 2025

  • This intense psychological thriller brings a heavy sci-fi twist to a familiar amnesia storyline

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Peter Dinklage leads this bleak and gruesome Western that’s filled with gnarly action and a cool cast of characters
