This Week’s Movie Menu (28 April – 4 May 2025)

It’s time for another summer blockbuster season to get underway, with this week’s releases including an exciting anti-Avengers team-up, an intimate look at the final years of a Beatle, and a sunny mystery sequel…

Movie of the Week

Thunderbolts* (dir. Jake Schreier)

CAST: Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Geraldine Viswanathan, Chris Bauer, Wendell Pierce, Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Weisz

CREW: Jake Schreier (director), Lee Sung Jin and Eric Pearson (writers), Kevin Feige (producer), Son Lux (composer), Andrew Droz Palermo (cinematographer), Angela M. Catanzaro and Harry Yoon (editors)

PLOT: After being caught in a deadly trap, a group of antiheroes – former Black Widow assassin Yelena Belova (Pugh), enhanced super-soldier Bucky Barnes (Stan), Russian defender Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian (Harbour), disgraced Captain America John Walker (Russell), distortive fugitive Ava Starr / Ghost (John-Kamen) and skilled fighter Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster (Kurylenko) – must work together to take down a greater evil…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Some of Marvel’s least heroic figures form the MCU’s least likely team-up to date in a sprawling action-adventure that offers plenty of darkly enjoyable fun
  • Characters from past MCU films and TV shows pop up left and right, with the actors forming a very different kind of chemistry than we’re used to from past Avengers movies
  • The creative team of Netflix’s hit anthology Beef, including director Jake Schreier and writer Lee Sung Jin, are also involved in this film, so expect some truly spicy drama and pitch-black comedy on a blockbuster level
  • As the final film in Phase Five, it sets up a potentially grimmer future for the MCU, with many of the film’s cast members already confirmed for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday
  • Pay close attention to that asterisk in the title – could it be that there’s another, more comics-accurate name waiting to be revealed?

Thunderbolts* is showing in cinemas from Thursday 1 May 2025

Two to One (dir. Natja Brunckhorst)

CAST: Sandra Hüller, Max Riemelt, Ronald Zehrfeld, Ursula Werner, Peter Kurth, Martin Brambach, Kathrin Wehlisch, Anselm Haderer, Lotte Shirin Keiling, Robert Höller, Olli Dittrich, Tom Keune, Uwe Preuss, Yorck Dippe, Tilla Kratochwil, Hilmar Eichhorn, David Bredin, Christoph Müller

PLOT: In 1990 East Germany, as unification with the West looms over an otherwise pleasant summer, childhood friends Maren (Hüller), Robert (Riemelt) and Volker (Zehrfeld) stumble across a fortune in East German currency, and come up with a plan to spend it wisely before the capitalist West takes over and the cash becomes worthless…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The unification of East and West Germany, a significant event that marked the end of the Cold War, is given a lighter touch in this hilarious comedy with plenty of heart and humour
  • Sandra Hüller, previously seen in The Zone of Interest and her Oscar-nominated turn in Anatomy of a Fall, is one of the three leads, alongside Berlin Syndrome star Max Reimelt and Ronald Zehrfeld of filmmaker Christian Petzold’s Phoenix
  • Writer-director Natja Brunckhorst adopts the lively spirit of Danny Boyle’s Millions, a film with a strikingly similar plot, while also exploring the long-term consequences of living under Communism
  • There are some inventive ways in which the main characters choose to spread the wealth amongst their community, ultimately representing the social values they were raised to believe in but were never granted
  • You’ll laugh, gasp, shed a tear, and then do it all over again as this winning comedy gives viewers a fun history lesson about the value of community and friendship

Two to One is showing in cinemas from Friday 2 May 2025

  • Lennon’s tragic demise is also explored, in ways that are deeply upsetting but important in understanding the very last few moments of his life
  • If you can’t get enough of Lennon on the big screen, then this will more than satisfy your tastes regarding the most mythologised Beatle of them all

Borrowed Time: Lennon’s Last Decade is showing in cinemas from Friday 2 May 2025

Where Dragons Live (dir. Suzanne Raes)

CAST: Edward Impey, Harriet Impey, Lawrence Impey, Matthew Impey

There, they reflect on their parents’ eccentric imaginations that elevated their childhoods…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Uncover a fantastical world within a confined family unit in this endearing documentary about the power of imagination
  • The homely Oxfordshire estate where we spend most of the movie looks and feels like something out of a classic children’s novel, further elevating the otherwise grounded fantasy element
  • Siblings Edward, Harriet, Lawrence and Matthew invite filmmaker Suzanne Raes into their family home to show the world all the wondrous dragon-themed items that their parents collected throughout their lives
  • Each sibling is given an equal amount of dramatic weight as Raes taps into their individual relationships with their now-gone father and mother
  • Their imagination lives on through the various items we come across, resulting in a sweet-natured look at family and the stories we tell the ones we love

Where Dragons Live is showing in cinemas from Friday 2 May 2025

  • There are some brutal fight sequences that take full advantage of the performers’ physical agility and the vertigo-inducing setting
  • The ever-reliable Clive Owen is also around to deliver a chilling antagonistic role opposite Ridley’s formidable hero

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The Twisted Childhood Universe – which began with the two Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey movies – expands further with a dark new take on yet another childhood classic
  • M. Barrie’s most famous creation is given a creepy makeover that’s brought to life by actor Martin Portlock, in a towering lead performance that will haunt your nightmares

  • The sharp direction by Scott Chambers (aka Christopher Robin in Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2) does not shy away from some utterly gruesome violence where nobody is safe from Peter Pan’s wrath
  • It all hints at a major future crossover with other deadly figures in the TCU, including Winnie-the-Pooh and upcoming violent takes on Bambi and Pinocchio, both of which are due out later this year

  • Go and see it if you’re up for the silliest quest ever, and prepare to laugh from Camelot to Castle Aarrgh!

  • In addition to playing members of the titular fictional band Flame, Slade was instrumental in the film’s development, bringing writer Andrew Burkin and director Richard Loncraine on tour with them so they could gather anecdotes and sprinkle them into the script
  • Unlike most other band-centric movies of the time, it focuses on the darker side of rock ‘n’ roll fame as well as the corporate side of it all, represented by character actor Tom Conti as a ruthless agent
  • It quickly became a cult hit, with Mark Kermode dubbing it “the Citizen Kane of rock musicals”, while the soundtrack album reached gold status in the UK
  • Come for the rocking music, and stay for an honest depiction of what it really was to live the life of a rock star, as told from the perspective of actual rock stars
