This Week’s Movie Menu (1 – 7 July 2024)

As Britain heads to the polls this week, there’s never been a healthier choice of movies to chase away the election blues, from a star-studded trilogy capper to an action-packed return of an 80s hero, to a true Coppola classic…

Movie of the Week

MaXXXine (2024, dir. Ti West)

CAST: Mia Goth, Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, Kevin Bacon

CREW: Ti West (director, writer, producer, editor), Mia Goth, Jacob Jaffke, Harrison Kreiss and Kevin Turen (producers), Tyler Bates (composer), Eliot Rockett (cinematographer)

PLOT: In mid-80s Hollywood, former adult film star Maxine Minx (Goth) gets her big break as a mainstream actor. However, when a dangerous killer stalks and preys upon several movie starlets, Maxine’s sinister past threatens to come to light…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Filmmaker Ti West wraps up his slasher trilogy – which also included X and Pearl – with his most star-studded entry yet
  • Mia Goth reprises her role from X, with memorable supporting turns from the likes of Elizabeth Debicki, Kevin Bacon, Lily Collins, singer Halsey and more
  • With X being a homage to 70s-era slashers and Pearl being a callback to classic Technicolour musicals, this one adopts the aesthetic and tone of seedy B-movies from the 80s
  • In true Tarantino style, it mixes fact with fiction as the Night Stalker – a real-life serial killer who terrorised California in the mid-80s – is the film’s primary threat
  • Expect yet another deranged performance by Goth, who quite possibly delivers her most ferocious turn in this series yet

MaXXXine is showing in cinemas from Friday 5 July 2024

  • It’s a traditional romance with plenty of bright, optimistic flare that will have you swooning

His therapist, Anna (Riseborough), and police officer Soren (S. Skarsgård) attempt to investigate the crimes and understand the reasoning behind them, uniting all three people in unexpected ways…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This Scandinavian crime thriller explores the dark and disturbing psychology behind committing some unspeakable acts of violence
