CREW: Andrew Stanton (director, writer), McKenna Harris (writer), Jessica Choi and Lindsey Collins (producers), Randy Newman (composer), Matt Aspbury and Jean-Claude Kalache (cinematographers), Jennifer Neysa Jew (editor)

PLOT: The toys that live in the room of young Bonnie (Spears), as led by Jessie (Cusack) and Buzz Lightyear (Allen), are startled by the arrival of Lilypad (Lee), a smart tablet that threatens to take up all of Bonnie’s playtime, so they call in their friend Woody (Hanks) to help out…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Woody, Buzz and the whole gang are back for a brand-new adventure that addresses the growing presence of technology in children’s lives
  • Andrew Stanton, who also directed Pixar classics like Finding Nemo and WALL-E, steps in to helm a poignant new entry in the beloved franchise
  • Tom Hanks and Tim Allen are of course back in their signature voiceover roles, along with most of the rest of the cast, while Past Lives star Greta Lee brings a fresh presence as the feared new piece of tech
  • Fans can expect plenty of heartfelt moments and hilarious comedy, while also seeing their favourite characters evolve to some unexpected new places
  • While the jury is still out over whether this movie was wholly necessary, given how well the previous films concluded, it’s nonetheless exciting to return to this world that has enchanted viewers’ imaginations for years

Toy Story 5 is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 June 2026

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

CREW: Tina Gharavi (director), Justine Waddell (writer, producer), Christopher Figg, Julie Link, Philipp G. Steffens and Meg Thomson (producers), Simon Goff (composer), Sebastian Edschmid (cinematographer), Hansjörg Weißbrich and Ben Wilson (editors)

PLOT: In 1910 Britain, Katherine Hilbery (Bennett) seeks to pursue a career in astronomy, but after her controlling father Trevor (Spall) forces an engagement between her and family friend William (Whitehall), she sets out to reclaim her independence…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • One of the livelier stories by influential 20th century author Virginia Woolf is adapted into a winning romantic-comedy that will appeal to just about anyone
  • It is the first known film adaptation of Woolf’s novel, with this one coming from BAFTA-nominated director Tina Gharavi
  • Haley Bennett leads a formidable cast including acting thespians Timothy Spall and Jennifer Saunders, as well as fresher faces like Jack Whitehall and singer Lily Allen
  • Like most of Woolf’s work, it features empowering feminist themes that might have been shocking at the time but will likely resonate with many viewers in this day and age
  • With enough wit, charm and energy to match the likes of Bridgerton or even Jane Austen’s work, this will inspire anyone to look well beyond the stars

Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 June 2026

Nino (dir. Pauline Loquès)

CAST: Théodore Pellerin, William Lebghil, Salomé Dewaels, Jeanne Balibar, Camille Rutherford, Estelle Meyer, Victoire Du Bois, Mathieu Amalric

CREW: Pauline Loquès (director, writer), Maud Ameline (writer), Sandra da Fonseca (producer), Lucie Baudinaud (cinematographer), Clémence Diard (editor)

PLOT: After being diagnosed with throat cancer, 29-year-old Nino (Pellerin) confronts his possible mortality as he wanders throughout the streets of Paris before starting chemotherapy…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • As this quiet and contemplative French drama proves, the most effective character pieces are the ones where little, yet more than enough, is said
  • French-Canadian actor Théodore Pellerin, previously seen in Lurker and Never Rarely Sometimes Always, is a revelation as the conflicted young man of the title
  • It marks the feature debut of filmmaker Pauline Loquès, who shot the film entirely on location in Paris to give scenes an extra dose of realism
  • After premiering during last year’s Cannes Film Festival (in the Critics’ Week program), it received widespread critical acclaim as well as two Césars (aka the French Oscars) for Best First Feature Film and Best Male Revelation for Pellerin
  • Viewers will find themselves emotionally invested in a story that hints at profound tragedy while also fighting back tears as it reaches a bittersweet conclusion

Nino is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 June 2026

Cactus Pears (dir. Rohan Parashuram Kanawade)

CAST: Bhushaan Manoj, Suraaj Suman, Jayshri Jagtap, Nitin Bansode, Harish Baraskar, Ram Daund, Vidya Joshi, Hemant Kadam, Rani Kasliwal, Vaishali Kendale, Pratiksha Kote, Sandhya Pawase, Hitesh Porje, Supekar Pruthvi

PLOT: After the death of his father, call-centre worker Anand (Manoj) returns to his ancestral village in rural Western India to observe the ten-day mourning ritual, but after reconnecting with childhood friend Balya (Suman), he finds himself confronting unexpected feelings…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Indian filmmaker Rohan Parashuram Kanawade makes a powerful statement with his debut feature that explores queer identity in a deeply traditional part of the country
  • The film was shot in Kanawade’s home village in Western India, with the story inspired by his own experiences as a queer man in addition to particular familial relationships
  • Lead actors Bhushaan Manoj and Suraaj Suman share a tender chemistry as their characters both wrestle with unresolved emotions and fear of becoming their authentic selves
  • Notably, it is the first Indian narrative film to have been awarded the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival
  • Its LGBTQ+ themes lend a unique perspective to the resounding universality of the story, which the debut filmmaker presents with impressive humanity

Cactus Pears is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 June 2026

Lesbian Space Princess (dirs. Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese)

CAST: Shabana Azeez, Bernie Van Tiel, Gemma Chua-Tran, Richard Roxburgh, Kween Kong, Mark Bonanno, Zachary Ruane, Broden Kelly, Madeleine Sami, Jordan Raskopoulos, Demi Lardner, Reuben Kaye

CREW: Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese (directors, writers), Tom Phillips (producer), Michael Darren (composer), Ben Fernandez (editor)

PLOT: Saira (Azeez), the introverted princess of the planet Clitopolis, is forced to venture beyond her comfort zone in order to save her ex-girlfriend Kiki (Van Tiel) from the sinister clutches of “Straight White Maliens” (Bonanno, Ruane and Kelly)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • With visuals as wacky as that eye-catching title, this adult-centric Australian sci-fi animated comedy is a rip-roaring adventure across the queer-friendly galaxy
  • Debut writer-directors Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese create a vivid and often crude animation style that neatly accompanies the unpredictable and surprisingly heartwarming narrative
  • The voice cast includes Shabana Azeez from HBO Max’s hit show The Pitt, character actor Richard Roxburgh as a sardonic spaceship, and comedy troupe Aunty Donna as a group of hilariously named “Straight White Maliens”
  • Beyond the hilarious intergalactic escapades, the film tackles some poignant themes of self-love and independence which anyone can relate to, regardless of their sexuality
  • It has all the ingredients to become a future cult classic, not just among queer audiences but also animation enthusiasts after something very different from the regular crop of cartoon movies

Lesbian Space Princess is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 June 2026

Familiar Touch (dir. Sarah Friedland)

CAST: Kathleen Chalfant, Carolyn Michelle Smith, Andy McQueen, H. Jon Benjamin, Bernard Beck, Jon Lopez, London Garcia, Mike G., Joahn Webb, Sandy Velasco, Dick Myers

CREW: Sarah Friedland (director, writer, producer), Alexandra Byer and Matthew Thurm (producers), Gabe C. Elder (cinematographer), Aacharee Ungsriwong (editor)

PLOT: Ruth (Chalfant) is an octogenarian woman who moves into an assisted living centre, where she contends with her relationship to herself and her caregivers as her memory begins to fade away…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This emotional drama has been described as a coming-of-old-age film that is far more accurate than you’d imagine
  • Filmmaker Sarah Friedland dives into the cognitively declining head of an elderly person in the most effective ways since Oscar-winners The Father and Amour
  • Kathleen Chalfant delivers an exceptional lead performance, and she’s supported by professional actors like Carolyn Michelle Smith and H. Jon Benjamin (yes, of Archer and Bob’s Burgers fame), as well as actual members of the retirement community where the film was primarily shot
  • It won a few awards at the 2024 edition of the Venice Film Festival, including the Lion of the Future prizethat highlights debut filmmakers, as well as both Best Director and Best Actress in the festival’s Orizzonti section (its version of Cannes’s Un Certain Regard program)
  • Viewers will be deeply touched by the gentle and dignified depiction of old age that few other films can claim to deliver so compassionately

Familiar Touch is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 June 2026

Effi o Blaenau (dir. Marc Evans)

CAST: Leisa Gwenllian, Tom Rhys Harries, Gavin Lee Lewis, Owen Alun, Sion Eifion, Leah Gaffey, Carys Gwillym, Nel Rhys Lewis, Mared Llywelyn, Sarah Timmins

CREW: Marc Evans (director), Gary Owen (writer), Branwen Cennard (producer), Ioana Selaru and Sion Trefor (composers), Eira Wyn Jones (cinematographer), Elen Pierce Lewis (editor)

PLOT: Effi (Gwenllian) is a young woman who is desperate to escape her destitute town in North Wales, but a chance nightclub encounter with injured soldier Lee (Harries) sets her on a much different path…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The harsh realities of working-class life have never felt more real than in this engrossingly bleak Welsh-language drama
  • Based on playwright Gary Owen’s influential monodrama Iphigenia in Splott, director Marc Evans reimagines the hard-hitting story as an expansive and deeply cinematic portrait of socio-economic woe
  • Leisa Gwenllian is breathtaking in a deeply complex lead role that invites a fair amount of sympathy and condemnation, and you can expect her to go on to great things from the strength of this performance alone
  • It tackles numerous issues like healthcare, alcoholism, infidelity, and the unmistakable attraction of co-star Tom Rhys Harries, soon to be seen as the lead in DC’s upcoming horror Clayface
  • Both a searing character study and a devastating reflection of our desolate reality that would make Ken Loach proud, the film works exceptionally for empathetic audiences

Effi o Blaenau is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 June 2026

PLOT: 18-year-old Noah (Banks) and her affluent step-brother Nick (Broome) are in a forbidden relationship with each other, which is tested when Noah begins studying at Oxford University and Nick becomes consumed by his work…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The UK-set remake of Mercedes Ron’s racy Culpables book series – previously adapted into a hit Spanish-language trilogy – takes the central romance to new extremes
  • Most of the cast and crew from the previous film are back, including leads Asha Banks and Matthew Broome, directors Charlotte Fassler and Dani Girdwood, and screenwriter Melissa Osborne (who’s joined this time by co-writer Bella Heesom)
  • This second entry takes a look at how the main lovers’ realities, whether it be studying or working, can realistically drive couples like them further apart, and not just in terms of distance
  • Even so, there’s still plenty of passionate romance and sensual set-pieces that fans have come to expect from the franchise
  • It was shot back-to-back with the upcoming third and final entry in the trilogy, titled Our Fault: London, so audiences can look forward to at least one more chapter after this exciting one!

Your Fault London is streaming exclusively on Prime Video from Wednesday 17 June 2026

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The sexy and thrilling crime caper that wowed audiences at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival finally gets a chance to be seen by the masses
  • Samara Weaving not only shares steamy on-screen chemistry with Strange Darling star Kyle Gallner, but also delivers one of her fiercest lead performances to date
  • There are touches of Bonnie & Clyde and Terrence Malick’s Badlands in director Adam Rehmeier’s steady combination of whirlwind romance and dark criminal activity
  • As of writing, the film still retains a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, a certain sign that this is bound to be a classic crime thriller of the future
  • It’s got everything that audiences could want in a movie, from high-stakes thrills to passionate romance to even a few twists and turns along the way

What’s Returning to Cinemas This Week?

Angel’s Egg (dir. Mamoru Oshii)

CAST (ENGLISH VERSION): Justice Slocum, Briana Knickerbocker

CAST (JAPANESE VERSION): Jinpachi Nezu, Mako Hyōdō

CREW: Mamoru Oshii (director, writer), Hiroshi Hasegawa, Masao Kobayashi, Mitsunori Miura, Toshio Suzuki and Yutaka Wada (producers), Yoshihiro Kanno (composer), Shigeo Sugimura (cinematographer), Seiji Morita (editor)

PLOT: In a desolate primordial world, a young girl (Knickerbocker/ Hyōdō) firmly protects a mysterious large egg, and encounters a young boy (Slocom/Nezu) who begins to question his faith and existence whilst on a secret mission…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The revered anime fable from famed filmmaker Mamoru Oshii, who also directed the original Ghost in the Shell, returns to cinemas with an all-new 4K restoration to mark its 40th anniversary
  • It was Oshii’s first original project, one that features much less dialogue and far heavier allegorical imagery than a lot of his other works
  • While Japanese critics were quick to praise the film upon release, Western audiences found it to be rather confusing, which led to the film underperforming at the box office and cementing Oshii’s reputation as an overly complex director
  • In the years since, its experimental nature and provocative Biblical themes have transformed the film into a revered cult classic, to where this 4K version made its debut at last year’s Cannes Film Festival
  • It may be initially hard to understand, but its gorgeous visuals and cerebral messages are bound to leave a good crack on your memory

Angel’s Egg is showing in cinemas from Wednesday 17 June 2026
