Take a big, bold, beautiful journey to the movies this week, where you’ll encounter a fantastical romantic adventure, a surreal musical collab, and much more…

Movie of the Week

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (dir. Kogonada)

CAST: Margot Robbie, Colin Farrell, Kevin Kline, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Lily Rabe, Jodie Turner-Smith, Billy Magnussen, Sarah Gadon, Brandon Perea, Chloe East, Hamish Linklater, Lucy Thomas, Yuvi Hecht, Calahan Skogman, Jacqueline Novak, Jennifer Grant, Shelby Simmons

CREW: Kogonada (director), Seth Reiss (writer, producer), Dan Friedkin, Ryan Friedkin, Youree Henley and Bradley Thomas (producers), Joe Hisaishi (composer), Benjamin Loeb (cinematographer), Susan E. Kim (editor)

PLOT: Sarah (Robbie) and David (Farrell) are strangers who meet at a mutual friend’s wedding, but fate brings them closer together on a mysterious journey through their individual pasts…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Acclaimed filmmaker Kogonada presents his most fanciful and utterly spellbinding feature yet, filled with plenty of the director’s signature introspection and sensual beauty
  • Margot Robbie, in her first role since leading the blockbuster Barbie, shares palpable chemistry with the ever-sweet Colin Farrell, the latter reuniting with Kogonada after their previous film After Yang
  • The script by Seth Reiss, recently a co-writer on The Menu, offers the kind of imaginative storytelling that few major Hollywood movies are eager to dabble in nowadays
  • Studio Ghibli fans will also be interested to know that celebrated Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi, who provided the hauntingly beautiful music for the likes of Spirited Away, contributes his first-ever score for an American film
  • Filled with humour, romance, fantasy and who knows what else, this is wonderful filmmaking that unlocks the imagination in any and all fortunate viewers

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 September 2025

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

CAST (URDU VERSION): Mooroo, Mariam Riaz Paracha, Khaled Anam, Ameed Riaz, Mahum Moazzam, Faiza Kazi, Dino Ali, Aysha Sheikh, Usman Riaz, Khalifa Sajeeruddin

CREW: Usman Riaz (director, composer, cinematographer), Moya O’Shea (writer), Manuel Cristóbal and Khizer Riaz (producers), Carmine Di Florio (composer), José Manuel Jiménez (editor)

PLOT: Vincent (Dhawan/Mooroo), the young son of renowned glassworker Tomas (Malik/Anam), meets Alliz (Mohindra/Paracha), the beautiful daughter of army colonel Amano (Jayawardena/A. Riaz), but their relationship is complicated when war breaks out…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The very-first hand-drawn animated feature from Pakistan is a striking piece of storytelling that rivals the likes of Studio Ghibli
  • First-time director Usman Riaz presents a style that is very close to the Japanese anime studio’s signature look, but there is plenty of its own visual identity to distinguish itself
  • Among the voice cast of the English dub are Doctor Who veterans Sacha Dhawan and Anjli Mohindra, who play the star-crossed lovers of this romantic tale
  • It played very well with Pakistani critics and audiences, and was even submitted by the country as its official entry for last year’s International Feature Film Oscar, though it ultimately wasn’t nominated
  • Lovers of animation will fall in love with the poetic visuals and imaginative worlds created within them, in a film that promises strong things for the future of Pakistani animation

The Glassworker is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 September 2025

Queen of the Ring (dir. Ash Avildsen)

CAST: Emily Bett Rickards, Josh Lucas, Tyler Posey, Walton Goggins, Francesca Eastwood, Marie Avgeropoulos, Deborah Ann Woll, Cara Buono, Kailey Farmer, Gavin Casalegno, Adam Demos, Kelli Berglund, Damaris Lewis, Martin Kove, James M. Cornette, Tony Rossall, Trinity Fatu, Mickie James, Britt Baker

CREW: Ash Avildsen (director, writer, producer), Alston Ramsay (writer), B.D. Gunnell, Isen Robbins and Aimee Schoof (producers), Aaron Gilhuis (composer), Andrew Strahorn (cinematographer), Craig Hayes (editor)

PLOT: In 1935, Mildred Burke (Rickards) is a single mother who aspires to become a professional wrestler, despite women being banned from the sport…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • A trailblazing figure in women’s sports is paid profound tribute to in a biopic that encapsulates her story in an entertaining package
  • Emily Bett Rickards – whom Arrow fans will recognise as Felicity Smoak – delivers a fiery lead turn as Mildred Burke, the female wrestler who broke down barriers and set an encouraging precedent in the sport
  • The film is directed and co-written by Ash Avildsen, who happens to be the son of John G. Alvidsen, the filmmaker that famously directed the first Oscar-winning movie in the Rocky franchise
  • Some brutal wrestling sequences show the fierce nature of the sport, captured with some energetic cinematography that livens it up with winning enthusiasm
  • It’s an inspiring story that anyone of any gender can look up to if they want to ever succeed at something despite the world denying them permission

Queen of the Ring is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 September 2025

Ebony & Ivory (dir. Jim Hosking)

CAST: Sky Elobar, Gil Gex, Carl Solomon

CREW: Jim Hosking (director, writer, producer), Theo Brooks, Denzil Monk and Ant Timpson (producers), Andrew Hung (composer), Mårten Tedin (cinematographer), Nick Armstrong and Mark Burnett (editors)

PLOT: Music legends Paul (Elobar) and Stevie (Gex) gather at a remote Scottish cottage, where they embark on an increasingly bizarre quest to create a chart-topping collaboration…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Jim Hosking, the surrealist filmmaker behind The Greasy Strangler and An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, offers a suitable weird new vision that may just be his most demented work yet
  • It is an entirely fictional dark comedy that imagines the first meeting between Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, albeit one that quickly descends into utter insanity
  • Actors Sky Elobar and Gil Gex have plenty of fun riffing on these music icons, especially when they’re placed in a setting and situation not too dissimilar to Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse
  • There are scenes that border on hallucinogenic, which may well make it a future cult classic for those who like to similarly experiment with certain substances
  • You’ll get plenty of uncomfortable laughs from the sheer lunacy that Hosking brings to the party, some of which are too weird to even describe in this preview!

Ebony & Ivory is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 September 2025

Happyend (dir. Neo Sora)

CAST: Yukito Hidaka, Hayato Kurihara, Yuta Hayashi, Shina Peng, Arazi, Kilala Inori, Ayumu Nakajima, Masaru Yahagi, Pushim, Makiko Watanabe, Shirō Sano, Yousuke Yukimatsu

CREW: Neo Sora (director, writer), Albert Tholen (producer, editor), Anthony Chen, Alex C. Lo, Aiko Masubuchi and Eric Nyari (producers), Lia Ouyang Rusli (composer), Bill Kirstein (cinematographer)

PLOT: In a near-futuristic Tokyo, where the threat of a catastrophic earthquake looms, high school students Kou (Hidaka) and Yuta (Kurihara) pull a prank on their principal (Sano), who in response installs an oppressive surveillance system that causes the two young friends to have contrasting reactions…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This Japanese high school drama offers biting satire aimed at the growing role of surveillance in our modern society
  • Filmmaker Neo Sora combines dark comedy with thoughtful social commentary as he presents an extreme situation that could genuinely become reality if we’re not careful with how we respond
  • It made its debut in the Orizzonti section at last year’s Venice Film Festival, while it competed for the Sutherland Trophy for the most outstanding debut feature at the BFI London Film Festival months later
  • The high school setting (a popular one in Japan, it seems) adds a fresh perspective to real-life issues that students will undoubtedly tackle later in life
  • As the world grows increasingly Orwellian in its approach to intruding on our online and offline privacy, Sora’s film reminds us that we can still laugh at such alarming things

Happyend is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 September 2025

Can I Get a Witness? (dir. Ann Marie Fleming)

CAST: Keira Jang, Joel Outlette, Sandra Oh, Ben Immanuel, Reece Presley, Elmira Bashash, Zaa Nkweta, Shaz Far, Casey Kenneth Wright, Yuki Morita, Patrick Gallagher, Naika Toussaint, Andre Anthony, Dominique Lucky Martell, Oscar Chark, Jude Wilson, Cassandra Sawtell, Tedra Rogers, Ally Battaggia, Kymo Van Oers

CREW: Ann Marie Fleming (director, writer, producer), Raymond Massey and Ruth Vincent (producers), Brent Belke (composer), C. Kim Miles (cinematographer), Justin Li (editor)

PLOT: In the distant future, humanity preserves the progress it has made by requiring people to end their lives once they turn 50, during a process that is artistically recorded by young government witnesses, one of them being Kiah (Jang) who is beginning her first day on the job…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Some heavy end-of-life themes provide the fuel for a compelling dystopian drama that will have you thinking deeply
  • Rather than leaning into the underlying horror of the premise, filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming adopts a more nuanced tone that is closer to the likes of Her and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
  • Young actor Keira Jang proves to be a formidable lead with plenty of emotional weight, and has strong support in the form of Killing Eve star Sandra Oh
  • The film blends live-action and animation during various segments where the artistic imagination of its protagonists are in full bloom
  • It’s a provocative and cerebral concept that is executed with surprising warmth and intelligence for viewers to easily digest

Can I Get a Witness? is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 September 2025

Diplo: The Mighty Dinosaur (dir. Wojtek Wawszczyk)

PLOT: Diplodocus (Wanderer), a young green dinosaur, finds that the world around him is mysteriously disappearing, and he sets out to restore it on an adventure that will take him further than he ever realised…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • From the mind of Polish filmmaker Wojtek Wawszczyk comes a spectacular family adventure that combines CGI animation with other unexpected elements
  • The writer-director brings to life an all-new interpretation of the 80s comic book character created by Polish illustrator Tadeusz Baranowski
  • It is the largest animated project in Poland’s film history, having been in development since 2014 and finishing production twelve years later!
  • There are plenty of creative storytelling beats, some of which even get a little meta, and all getting earned reactions from audiences of all ages at various festivals around the world
  • It’s a bright and colourful adventure for families who are looking to find a new dino-related big screen adventure in the wake of Jurassic World: Rebirth

Diplo: The Mighty Dinosaur is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 September 2025

Tape (dir. Bizhan Tong)

CAST: Adam Tin-Nam Pak, Selena Lee, Kenny Kwan, Summer Chan, Angus Yeung, Ho Yeung Fung

CREW: Bizhan Tong (director, writer, producer), Selena Lee (writer, producer), Bonnie Lo (writer), Keaton Henson (composer), Colleen Kwok (cinematographer), Mitchell Tolliday (editor)

PLOT: In modern-day Hong Kong, estranged friends Wing (Pak), Jon (Kwan) and Amy (Lee) reunite fifteen years after a life-changing incident during high school, and must deal with the dark secrets that they share…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • A complex friendship triangle is the focus of this contemplative drama from Hong Kong
  • It is a remake of Richard Linklater’s 2001 film of the same name, which itself was based on Stephen Belber’s similarly titled play
  • Linklater is listed as an executive producer on filmmaker Bizhan Tong’s interpretation, which is also co-written and produced by one of the film’s stars Selena Lee
  • Some intimate cinematography homes in on the deep emotional state of its three primary characters, who each have their share of shocking secrets that are undoubtedly revealed along the way
  • Fans of Hong Kong cinema will appreciate the tender love and care put into a new version of a story that really does transcend language

Tape is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 September 2025

PLOT: At a college party in Dublin, rugby player Jace (Lunnon-Collery) meets aspiring trans filmmaker Charlie (Hannon), and the two spend an emotional night together…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Sparks fly among Dublin youth from very different backgrounds in what is being billed as Before Sunrise for a modern generation
  • Newcomers Liath Hannon and Adam Lunnon-Collery share sweet and tender chemistry as two college students who are drawn together against the odds
  • First-time feature filmmaker Donncha Gilmore explores young love within a queer lens that also incorporates heavy themes of trans identity
  • You’re right there with the two main characters as they manoeuvre through, over and under their growing attraction to one another
  • It’s a bright debut that offers viewers a fresh look at what it is to fall in love despite what society at large seems to think

PLOT: In Montreal, Simon (Pellerin) is a rising drag star who falls for Olivier (Maritaud), the new recruit at the bar and show where he performs, but it soon transpires that Olivier has a hidden agenda…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The bold and beautiful drag scene is once again in the spotlight as this riotous French-Canadian romantic drama offers plenty of theatrics all around
  • Rising star Théodore Pellerin, soon to be seen in the Sundance hit psychological drama Lurker, puts on a fierce display as the central drag queen caught in an increasingly tight bond
  • As with last year’s underrated romantic gem Unicorns, the film gives plenty of opportunities for drag performers of all kinds to do what they do best in front of the camera
  • Away from the stage, there is some surprisingly intense human drama that plays with expectations and leads characters down a much darker path than anticipated
  • Under bombastic filmmaking by Sophie Dupuis, the film offers something for anyone looking for more than just the enjoyable drag experience

PLOT: Hamid (Bessa), a Syrian exile, joins a secret undercover cell that is tracking down the fugitive leaders of the Assad regime, a mission that soon transports him to France in pursuit of his former torturer, a man named Harfaz (Barhom)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Your heart simply won’t stop thumping all throughout this tense espionage thriller with shades of Slow Horses and John le Carré all blended together
  • Filmmaker Jonathan Millet presents a suspenseful cat-and-mouse narrative where you completely identify with the cat, but also see some humanity within the mouse
  • Lead actors Adam Bessa, of Netflix’s Extraction franchise, and Tawfeek Barhom, recently seen in the horror prequel The First Omen, put in a pair of gripping performances as two deeply troubled men
  • The film, which borrows elements from real-life incidents of Syrian vigilantism, was nominated for the Caméra d’Or (the prize for first feature film) at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival
  • It’s a must-watch for lovers of different types of spy movies that have nothing to do with Bond, Bourne or any of the more heightened espionage franchises

Ghost Trail is showing in cinemas from Friday 19 September 2025

  • Lily James not only stars as entrepreneur Whitney Wolfe Herd, but is also credited as a producer, her first such credit
  • Under director and co-writer Rachel Lee Goldenberg, James delivers a fierce lead turn as the woman who would define modern dating, for better or worse

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The dangers of anti-establishment extremism are brought to the surface of this fiercely intense thriller about the warped sense of freedom some strive to achieve
  • It puts the radical Sovereign Citizen movement under the microscope, as well as its harmful promotion of conspiracy theories and misinterpreted legal advice that has been known to cause real damage among certain people
  • Nick Offerman puts in his most ferocious and unhinged lead turn to date, supported strongly by Room breakout Jacob Tremblay and beloved character actor Dennis Quaid
  • Writer-director Christian Swegal, making his feature debut, loosely based the film on a real-life incident in 2010 that left two police officers dead at the hands of two members of the movement
