Movie of the Week

Project Hail Mary (dirs. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller)

PLOT: Dr. Ryland Grace (Gosling), a school science teacher, wakes up on a spacecraft deep in space with no memory of himself or his mission, but eventually learns that he is the sole survivor of a mission to search the cosmos for an answer to a catastrophic event back on Earth, and as he continues his mission, he forms an unlikely bond with another intergalactic traveller…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The eagerly anticipated sci-fi epic, adapted from Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, is a rousing celebration of humanity and our ability to achieve the impossible
  • It marks the return of directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative duo behind The LEGO Movie and the Spider-Verse franchise, to live-action filmmaking for the first time in nearly a decade
  • Ryan Gosling carries the movie with a soulful, charismatic and deeply human lead performance that could rank among his very best
  • He shares some impeccable on-screen chemistry with a being named “Rocky” who is brought to life by a stunning mix of practical puppetry and CG effects, to a point where you’ll actually wonder if a puppet can win an Oscar for a supporting turn!
  • Early word suggests that this will be a Hollywood blockbuster to beat, and with such wondrous minds working in front of and behind the camera, it’s bound to become an easy audience favourite

Project Hail Mary is showing in cinemas from Thursday 19 March 2026

PLOT: After surviving a deadly game of hide-and-seek with her now-discarded husband and in-laws, Grace McCaullay (Weaving) finds herself forced to compete in an all-new game wherein the wealthiest and most powerful families on the planet must hunt her down or risk losing their fortunes, but things become personal when Grace’s younger sister Faith (Newton) is also roped into the chaos…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Scream (2022) and Abigail directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – collectively known as Radio Silence – return to the world of their breakout horror-comedy hit for a long-awaited follow-up
  • Lead scream queen Samara Weaving is also back as the former bride-turned-victim Grace, and this time she’s facing even deadlier foes played by the likes of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Elijah Wood, and even legendary genre filmmaker David Cronenberg
  • Weaving’s got company on her side this time, however, as Kathryn Newton is also on-board to play her sister, with their sibling chemistry illuminating an otherwise grimly humorous romp
  • The violence is much more refined and somehow even more entertaining this time round, particularly in much larger set-pieces that make full use of the wacky concept
  • Fans of the first film will enjoy being back in this frightfully fun story and its amusingly eccentric characters, while being engrossed as to where things go from here

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

Dead Man’s Wire (dir. Gus Van Sant)

PLOT: In 1977, disgruntled customer Tony Kiritsis (Skarsgård) enters the office of mortgage broker Richard Hall (Montgomery) and holds him hostage with a shotgun wired to his neck, determined to expose Hall’s business and family for their shady actions against him…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • A fascinating real-life hostage situation is given a darkly humorous cinematic makeover by director Gus Van Sant, who makes his first film in eight years
  • Bill Skarsgård plays Tony Kiritsis, the complex figure who made headlines with his actions, while Stranger Things breakout Dacre Montgomery plays the poor sap who spends most of the movie with a shotgun aimed directly at him
  • Look out for other supporting turns from character actors like Cary Elwes, Colman Domingo, and even the legendary Al Pacino
  • Screenwriter Austin Kolodney enlisted the help of filmmakers Alan Berry and Mark Enochs, who made the documentary Dead Man’s Line based on the events, to help provide as much factual information as possible for his more dramatised take
  • It’s fierce, unpredictable, and hugely entertaining stuff from a visionary director who perfectly applies his experimental sensibilities to his best film in years

Dead Man’s Wire is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

The Good Boy (dir. Jan Komasa)

CAST: Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, Anson Boon, Kit Rakusen, Monika Frajczyk, Savannah Steyn, Callum Booth-Ford, Austin Haynes

PLOT: Tommy (Boon), a young self-destructive hoodlum, is kidnapped by dysfunctional couple Chris (Graham) and Kathryn (Riseborough), who chain him up in their basement and force him into a rehabilitation process that aims to change his overall behaviour…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This dark yet surprisingly heartfelt thriller recontextualises a straightforward kidnapping as something much more human
  • It is the English-language debut of Polish filmmaker Jan Komasa, who previously directed the Oscar-nominated drama Corpus Christi
  • Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough form two of cinema’s most unconventional kidnappers, while Anson Boon is magnetic in his initial volatility that is slowly but surely tempered throughout the film
  • The script by Bartek Bartosik and Naqqash Khalid indulges in twisted family activities that Dogtooth-era Yorgos Lanthimos would be proud of, all while maintaining an air of unpredictability throughout
  • You’ll be fascinated by the unorthodox morals at its centre, but always captivated by the strong performances and the dramatic implications behind their characters

The Good Boy is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

Midwinter Break (dir. Polly Findlay)

CAST: Lesley Manville, Ciarán Hinds, Julie Lamberton, Ed Sayer, Niamh Cusack, Leila Laaraj

CREW: Polly Findlay (director), Bernard MacLaverty and Nick Payne (writers), Guy Heeley and Floor Onrust (producers), Hannah Peel (composer), Laurie Rose (cinematographer), Lucia Zecchetti (editor)

PLOT: Stella (Manville) and Gerry (Hinds) are a middle-aged couple who take a trip to Amsterdam together, where they are confronted with memories of the past…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • A couple’s holiday is upended by some long-buried secrets in this small-scale drama that will leave viewers in complete and utter bits
  • Oscar-nominated actors Lesley Manville and Ciarán Hinds share a warm on-screen chemistry that fuels later, much more emotional revelations
  • Author Bernard MacLaverty adapts his own book of the same name alongside Nick Payne, who also wrote the similarly touching romantic dramas The Sense of an Ending and We Live in Time
  • The film makes understated use of the Dutch capital, where the city’s vibrant culture and atmosphere serve as a warm backdrop for some of the chillier moments (and not just because of the weather!)
  • It will give you the feeling of going on a nice little trip, while still being entertained by the grounded human drama within this powerful story of unconditional love

Midwinter Break is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

  • The English voice cast includes strong A-list talent including Mark Ruffalo, Will Ferrell and Natalie Portman, the latter also being a producer on the film
  • Some striking hand-drawn animation captures the whimsical sci-fi storytelling in ways that recall Studio Ghibli while also establishing its own visual identity

PLOT: In Italy, widowed President Mariano De Santis (Servillo) enters his final term in office with pressure to sign a bill legalising euthanasia and to consider pardoning two criminals who murdered their partners, all while grappling with the revelation of his late wife’s infidelity…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • In an age where heads of state are largely seen as ineffective or destructive, Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino’s latest drama reminds us of the humanity within those who still have their dignity
  • Toni Servillo, the acclaimed Italian character actor who has worked with Sorrentino on numerous other projects, won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at last year’s Venice Film Festival for his sensitive portrayal of a fictional President
  • As to be expected from a visionary like Sorrentino, it’s a beautifully shot feature where nearly every frame could be displayed in an art museum
  • It introduces certain moral dilemmas surrounding some real social issues that anyone around the world will be able to identify with in some way
  • The film is a significant achievement for Sorrentino, who asserts himself as one of the finest Italian directors working today

La Grazia is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

  • The stacked voice cast includes big names like Ewan McGregor, Helen Bonham Carter, Alisha Weir, comedy legend Mel Brooks (who’s also an executive producer) and late Monty Python member Terry Jones
  • In addition to songs lifted directly from the audiobook, there are plenty of new tracks penned by EGOT-certified songwriter Tim Rice, who’s best known for Disney classics like Aladdin and The Lion King
  • With the Easter holidays approaching fast, this is an ideal movie to book for kids who will otherwise be bored senseless!

The Land of Sometimes is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

CREW: Mauro Borrelli (director, writer), John Collins (writer), Shawn Boskie, Ivan Cohen, Manu Gargi, Kenneth Halsband and Michael Scott (producers), Leonardo De Bernardini (composer), Vladislav Opelyants (cinematographer), Vane Null (editor)

PLOT: In Jerusalem 33 AD, Jesus (Ward) and his disciples – including Peter (Wheatley) and Judas (Knepper) – gather for a meal to celebrate Passover, during which they all face their inner regrets before what comes next…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • One of the most infamous episodes in the life of Jesus is recreated with great love and care in time for the upcoming Easter celebrations
  • Director and visual artist Mauro Borrelli presents a bold and beautiful new vision of the oft-told Passion story
  • In addition to focusing on the inevitable demise of Jesus, as played by Jamie Ward, we get to see events unfold from the complex perspectives of his closest followers, among them Robert Knepper as the traitorous Judas
  • Borrelli reportedly underwent extensive research into the Gospels and the Torah to ensure that his film has a more accurate and plausible feel than most other past depictions of these events
  • For those seeking out something to reconfirm their faith during one of the most important religious holidays in existence, this will be a comforting and spiritual experience

The Last Supper is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

PLOT: The decades-spanning life and career of 60s music icon Marianne Faithfull, as told from the perspective of the fictional “Ministry of Not Forgetting” and an Overseer (Swinton) who’s been tasked with gathering information on her life…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The documentary format is significantly altered in this highly unusual hybrid of factual biopic and borderline Orwellian fantasy
  • It’s the most ambitious project yet from filmmakers Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, who previously pushed the traditional documentary layout to its limits with films like 20,000 Days on Earth and more recently The Extraordinary Miss Flower
  • In addition to showcasing the many highs and lows of singer Marianne Faithfull, who sadly passed away just over a year ago, the film includes a framing device featuring performances from the likes of Tilda Swinton and George MacKay
  • There are still many of the usual documentary traits, however, from plenty of archive footage to on-screen interviews with Faithfull’s friends and colleagues, to a recording of her final ever live performance
  • It is bold and inventive documentary filmmaking that will have your imagination soaring as you witness what the format can evolve to become

Broken English is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

  • One man’s fierce determination leads to something utterly incredible, which this suspenseful documentary capture with raw crowd-pleasing energy
  • Filmmaker Jeff W. Tseng follows central athlete Mark Sowerby on a decade-long mission to conquer the oceanic equivalent of Mount Everest
  • Throughout the film, we see the many dangers that Sowerby finds himself confronting, whether it’s deadly sea creatures or an increased heart rate that could jeopardise everything
  • Some gripping cinematography, both under and above the water, shows up front how perilous yet rather beautiful such an endeavour can be
  • If you loved similar documentaries like Free Solo and Touching the Void, this will make a fine addition to the collection of humans conquering (or sometimes not entirely) some of the greatest wonders of our planet

Don’t Be Prey is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

  • It’s a sweet and enjoyable collection that will have you chuckling in all the right places, but also leave you with a nice and sweet feeling inside

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The global television phenomenon returns with a long-awaited feature-length continuation of the Shelby criminal family saga
  • Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy returns to the role of Tommy Shelby, and it barely feels as though he’s spend any time away from the deeply complex character
  • Other returning cast members include Sophie Rundle and Stephen Graham, while Barry Keoghan, Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Roth are among the starry newcomers
  • It serves as a formidable entry point for those who may not have seen the show prior, while of course being a welcome return for those who have
  • As its own movie, this is a gripping and astutely performed historical thriller that deserves its transition to the big screen (or small screen, if you’re waiting for streaming)

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is streaming exclusively on Netflix from Friday 20 March 2026

What’s Returning to Cinemas This Week?

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Baz Luhrmann’s infamous jukebox musical returns to cinemas for its landmark 25th anniversary
  • The film redefined the movie musical with its extravagant and eye-popping visual style, collection of anachronistic popular songs, and a melancholic love story at its centre
  • Nicole Kidman earned an Oscar nomination for her role as the beautiful Satine, while the film also scored a nod for Best Picture and came away with two awards for its production and costume design
  • It quickly became a divisive hit among audiences, with some embracing the unique style and its chart-topping soundtrack, while others found it to be overly obnoxious and irritatingly simple-minded
  • Whether you love it or feel it to be an assault on all the senses, the big screen truly is where a film as mad and borderline unhinged deserves to be experienced

Moulin Rouge! is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

The Killer (dir. John Woo)

CAST: Chow Yun-Fat, Danny Lee, Sally Yeh, Kenenth Tsang, Chu Kong, Shing Fui-On, Ricky Yi Fan-Wai, Barry Wong

CREW: John Woo (director, writer), Tsui Hark (producer), Lowell Lowe (composer), Peter Pao and Wong Wing-Hang (cinematographers), Fan Kung-Ming (editor)

PLOT: Ah Jong (Yun-Fat), a professional Triad assassin, accidentally blinds young nightclub singer Jennie (Yeh) during a shootout, and riddled with guilt he decides to take on one final job to pay for her surgery…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Re-experience the film that made Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo a certified legend in the realm of action cinema, with this all-new 4K restoration of his 1989 classic
  • Before Hard Boiled (re-released a couple of weeks ago), Bullet in the Head and even his more Hollywood offerings like Face/Off and Mission: Impossible II, Woo crafted the intense and heavily violent story of an assassin bound by a moral obligation
  • It features some of the gnarliest and impressively choreographed action in cinema history, which helped the film and Woo gain international acclaim and attention from filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez
  • Despite a mixed critical reception upon release, it has become a pinnacle in action movie history, with Woo even going on to direct a gender-swapped English-language remake in 2024
  • If you’re an action movie die-hard (pun intended), then there’s no reason for you to skip seeing on the biggest screen possible one of the very best within the genre

The Killer is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026

The Revenant (dir. Alejandro G. Iñárritu)

CAST: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, Forrest Goodluck, Paul Anderson, Kristoffer Joner, Duane Howard, Melaw Nakehk’o, Arthur Redcloud, Lukas Haas, Brendan Fletcher, Tom Guiry, Grace Dove, Fabrice Adde

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s stone-cold masterpiece (no pun intended) celebrates its 10th anniversary with an exclusive IMAX run for the very first time
  • The biggest of big screens is the best place to experience the gorgeous Oscar-winning cinematography, as well as Leonardo DiCaprio’s captivating lead turn which finally won him his own much-elusive Oscar
  • Production on Iñárritu’s film was notoriously difficult, with several crew members quitting after being forced to endure extreme weather conditions that ballooned the original $60 million budget to well over $130 million
  • Nevertheless, the ambition remains present on-screen as Iñárritu displays a brutal naturalistic vision that is breathtaking in its raw audacity (but not as raw as the bison liver that DiCaprio actually ate on-screen!)
  • Before Iñárritu attempts to do what he did for DiCaprio here for Tom Cruise in the upcoming Digger, check out how he pushes even himself to the edge of his artistic talents with a breathtaking and visceral piece of art

The Revenant is showing in cinemas from Friday 20 March 2026
