This Week’s Movie Menu (23 – 29 September 2024)

The pure vision within this week’s crop of film releases is hard to ignore, especially when they contain divisive filmmaker epics, bold comic-book reinventions, suave hit-man capers, and a so-fetch teen classic…

Movie of the Week

Megalopolis (2024, dir. Francis Ford Coppola)

CAST: Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, Isabelle Kusman, Bailey Ives, Madeleine Gardella, Balthazar Getty, Romy Mars, Haley Sims, Dustin Hoffman

CREW: Francis Ford Coppola (director, writer, producer), Michael Bederman, Barry Hirsch and Fred Roos (producers), Osvaldo Golijov (composer), Mihai Malaimare Jr. (cinematographer), Cam McLauchlin, Glen Scantlebury and Robert Schafer (editors)

PLOT: As the futuristic city of New Rome begins to decay, idealist architect Cesar Catilina (Driver) makes plans to rebuild it as a sustainable utopia, but corrupt forces attempt to implement a suppressive status quo…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The legendary Francis Ford Coppola makes a grand return to filmmaking with a wildly ambitious new fantasy epic
  • Adam Driver leads a packed ensemble cast that includes screen icons like Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire and Dustin Hoffman, as well as fresher talent like Nathalie Emmanuel and Aubrey Plaza
  • Coppola largely self-financed his long-in-development passion project, raising the $120 million budget himself by selling off his winery
  • The film has been marred by controversy, including reports of on-set misconduct, the visual effects team being fired by the filmmaker, and most recently a scrapped trailer featuring AI-generated critic quotes
  • Nonetheless, everything about it sounds so completely bonkers that one would have to be a fool to not seek it out, even if it’s just out of pure curiosity!

Megalopolis is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 September 2024

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

Never Let Go (2024, dir. Alexandre Aja)

CAST: Halle Berry, Percy Daggs IV, Anthony B. Jenkins, Matthew Kevin Anderson, Christin Park, Stephanie Lavigne

CREW: Alexandre Aja (director, producer), Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby (writers), Dan Cohen, Dan Levine and Shawn Levy (producers), Robin “Rob” Coudert (composer), Maxime Alexandre (cinematographer), Elliot Greenberg (editor)

PLOT: In the middle of the woods, a mother (Berry) lives with her twin sons (Daggs IV and Jenkins) in a secluded cabin, where they have formed a strict close bond with each other to protect themselves from a malicious evil that has apparently taken over the world. However, when one of the brothers begins to doubt his mother’s claims, the family’s bond is tested in increasingly frightening ways…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This unsettling woodlands horror offers something supernatural – or possibly even psychological – to become afraid of
  • Oscar-winner Halle Berry gives a fierce turn as a protective mother at the centre of a growingly tense scenario
  • The film, from horror director Alexandre Aja, creates an unnerving sense of terror behind every tree and within every seemingly safe household
  • Some of its creepy imagery is bound to be seared into your memory in ways where you can’t get rid of them too easily
  • It is a terrifying experience that provides some blissful horror entertainment to get fully invested in

Never Let Go is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 September 2024

The Outrun (2024, dir. Nora Fingscheidt)

CAST: Saoirse Ronan, Paapa Essiedu, Nabil Elouahabi, Izuka Hoyle, Lauren Lyle, Saskia Reeves, Stephen Dillane, Eilidh Fisher, Naomi Wirthner, Danyal Ismail, Posy Sterling, Patch Bell, Nabil Elouahabi, Jack Rooke, Seamus Dillane, Conrad Williamson, Tony Hamilton, Ammar Younis, Scott Miller

CREW: Nora Fingscheidt (director, writer), Amy Liptrot (writer), Sarah Brocklehurst, Jack Lowden, Dominic Norris and Saoirse Ronan (producers), John Gürtler and Jan Miserre (composers), Yunus Roy Imer (cinematographer), Stephan Bechinger (editor)

PLOT: After descending into alcoholism whilst living in London, Rona (Ronan) returns to her remote home on the Orkney Islands, where she reconnects with her past and regains her strength…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Saoirse Ronan delivers the performance of a lifetime in this powerful tale of reconciling with oneself
  • The Oscar-nominated actor also produces the film, which is based on the award-winning memoir by Amy Liptrot (who co-writes the script with director Nora Fingscheidt)
  • Some stunning cinematography captures both the illustrious beauty of the Orkney Islands, and the disorienting and destructive lifestyle that the central character experiences in London
  • There are some deeply moving scenes that fixate on the Orkney culture and its deep resonance with the protagonist
  • It’s an inspiring and exceedingly emotional story that anyone with a pulse should be very, very moved by

The Outrun is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 September 2024

My Old Ass (2024, dir. Megan Park)

CAST: Maisy Stella, Aubrey Plaza, Maddie Ziegler, Kerrice Brooks, Percy Hynes White, Maria Dizzia, Seth Isaac Johnson, Carter Trozzolo, Al Goulem, Alexandria Rivera

CREW: Megan Park (director, writer), Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, Steven Rales and Margot Robbie (producers), Jaco Caraco and Tyler Hilton (composers), Kristen Correll (cinematographer), Jennifer Vecchiarello (editor)

PLOT: During a camping trip with her friends, high school student Elliott (Stella) gets high on mushrooms and unexpectedly hallucinates a conversation with her older self (Plaza), who shares some valuable insight into the young woman’s future…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The present and future collide in surprisingly heartfelt ways during this unique coming-of-age comedy
  • Maisy Stella and Aubrey Plaza portray lovable versions of the same character, who share plenty of young and old wisdom that will ring true for anyone of any age
  • It’s a real breakout for actor turned filmmaker Megan Park, who previously directed the yet-to-be-released (here in the UK, anyway) Jenna Ortega teen drama The Fallout
  • The film also has Margot Robbie among its producers, including her fellow Barbie collaborators Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara under their LuckyChap production company
  • With its sweet and funny nature, it’ll be impossible to not fall in love with this original crowd-pleaser

My Old Ass is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 September 2024

Hellboy: The Crooked Man (2024, dir. Brian Taylor)

CAST: Jack Kesy, Martin Bassindale, Jefferson White, Adeline Rudolph, Joseph Marcell, Leah McNamara, Hannah Margetson

CREW: Brian Taylor (director, writer), Christopher Golden and Mike Mignola (writers), Jeffrey Greenstein, Yariv Lerner, Mike Richardson, Sam Schulte, Robert Van Norden, Les Weldon and Jonathan Yunger (producers), Sven Faulconer (composer), Ivan Vatsov (cinematographer), Ryan Denmark (editor)

PLOT: In the 1950s, Hellboy (Kesy) – a demonic being raised by the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense to fight fellow supernatural forces – is summoned to a small community in rural Appalachia, which is being tormented by a malevolent being known as the Crooked Man (Bassindale)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Hellboy is back on the big screen in a fresh new reboot that takes a wildly different path to previous incarnations
  • Jack Kesy adopts the heavy make-up required to play Mike Mignola’s devilish comic-book character, and brings a new kind of laid-back energy to the role
  • Mignola also co-wrote the screenplay, which is loosely based on a limited series he created for the comics
  • There is some truly frightening imagery that makes effective use of the spooky environment and skin-crawling supernatural creatures
  • Depending on how well this movie does, there could be a lot more theatrical adventures with this comics-accurate take on the beloved character

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 September 2024

Dragonkeeper (2024, dirs. Li Jianping and Salvador Simó)

CAST: Bill Nighy, Bill Bailey, Anthony Howell, Mayalinee Griffith, Paul McEwan

CREW: Li Jianping and Salvador Simó (directors), Pablo I. Castrillo, Rosanna Cecchini, Ignacio Ferreras, Carole Wilkinson and Wang Xianping (writers), Manuel Cristobal, Larry Levene and Wei Wei Song (producers), Arturo Cardelús (composer), José Manuel Jiménez (editor)

PLOT: In ancient China, dragons fight alongside humans, until they are suddenly hunted down and imprisoned. Young enslaved orphan Ping (Griffith) decides to help the last living dragon, Danzi (Nighy), escape captivity and join him on a quest to retrieve a dragon egg…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Spain and China collaborate for the first time to bring audiences an exciting and adventurous animated feature for the whole family
  • Adapted from Carole Wilkinson’s book series, the film introduces audiences to a widespread world filled with magic and fantastical creatures
  • Bill Nighy and Bill Bailey are among the English voice cast, dubbing over the original Spanish language
  • It has some plentiful messages to depart towards its young target audience, while adults can appreciate some of the luscious animation on display
  • This could only be the beginning of an all-new family franchise, provided it goes over well with most viewers

Dragonkeeper is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 September 2024

The Teacher (2024, dir. Farah Nabulsi)

CAST: Saleh Bakri, Imogen Poots, Muhammad Abed Elrahman, Stanley Townsend, Muayyad Abd Elsamad, Andrea Irvine, Nabil Al Raee, Mahmood Bakri, Paul Herzberg

CREW: Farah Nabulsi (director, writer, producer), Sawsan Asfari and Ossama Bawardi (producers), Alex Baranowski (composer), Gilles Porte (cinematographer), Mike Pike (editor)

PLOT: In occupied Palestine, schoolteacher Basam (Bakri) finds himself caught between his dangerous commitment to political resistance and his duties as a step-in father figure to his student Adam (Elrahman)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning British-Palestinian filmmaker Farah Nabulsi makes a fierce feature debut
  • The film was shot entirely within Palestine, a rare occurrence for any filmmaker, let alone ones from the region itself
  • Saleh Bakri’s emotionally charged lead performance has earned him accolades at festivals around the world, while British actor Imogen Poots provides solid support as his character’s love interest
  • Though shot well before the current Israel-Gaza conflict, it is no less eerie to see the streets of Palestine serve as the tense backdrop for all the human drama
  • Some powerful developments make this a film that provides a vital window into a neglected corner of the world

The Teacher is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 September 2024

What’s Showing At Home This Week?

Wolfs (2024, dir. Jon Watts)

CAST: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Austin Abrams, Amy Ryan, Poorna Jagannathan, Zlatko Burić, Richard Kind

CREW: Jon Watts (director, writer, producer), George Clooney, Dede Gardner, Grant Heslov, Jeremy Kleiner, Dianne McGunigle and Brad Pitt (producers), Theodore Shapiro (composer), Larkin Seiple (cinematographer), Andrew Weisblum (editor)

PLOT: Jack (Clooney), a professional fixer who works alone, arrives at the apartment of Margaret (Ryan) to cover up a high-profile crime. However, when rival fixer Nick (Pitt), who also works alone, arrives at the apartment to perform the same task, the two of them are forced to work together across an increasingly difficult night…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • George Clooney and Brad Pitt reunite on-screen together for a wild and extremely entertaining crime caper
  • The Oscar-winning actors and producers are under the direction of MCU Spider-Man filmmaker Jon Watts, who makes a playful return to smaller-concept genre films like Cop Car
  • Expect plenty of bickering between the two A-listers, as well as one unpredictable encounter after another across a long and dangerous night
  • It was originally set for a much wider theatrical release before its streaming debut, but Apple suddenly pulled the plug on those plans in favour of an in-house debut instead
  • Nonetheless, it’s already shaping up to be a fun time – and we know, because a sequel has already been commissioned, with the director and his two leads set to return for more mayhem!

Wolfs is streaming exclusively on Apple TV+ from Friday 27 September 2024

Rez Ball (2024, dir. Sydney Freeland)

CAST: Jessica Matten, Julia Jones, Amber Midthunder, Kiowa Gordon, Dallas Goldtooth, Cody Lightning, Ernest Tsosie, Kauchani Bratt, Devin Sampson-Craig, River Rayne Thomas, Jojo Jackson, Avery Hale, Hunter Redhorse Arthur, Henry Wilson Jr, Jaren K. Robledo, Damian Henry Castellan, Kusem Goodwind, Zoey Reyes

PLOT: The Chuska Warriors, a Native American high school basketball team in New Mexico, are competing for the state championship title when they suddenly lose their star player, forcing them to come together like never before in order to keep the dream alive…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The inspiring story of an Indigenous basketball team will have you cheering and energised all the way through
  • An ensemble cast of young Native actors, among them Prey’s Amber Midthunder, are on ferocious form under the direction of Sydney Freeland
  • The script was co-written by Freeland and Sterlin Harjo, the co-creator of the hit TV series Reservation Dogs, while basketball icon LeBron James is listed as a producer
  • It is based loosely on a nonfiction novel by New York Times journalist Michael Powell, which like this film gives a completely fresh new look at life within Native communities
  • Both a compelling sports movie and a touching teen drama, with the best elements of both, this is a striking feature that you’ll be fully on board for

Rez Ball is streaming exclusively on Netflix from Friday 27 September 2024

Will & Harper (2024, dir. Josh Greenbaum)

CAST: Will Ferrell, Harper Steele

CREW: Josh Greenbaum (director, producer), Jessica Elbaum, Will Ferrell, Chris Leggett and Rafael Marmor (producers), Nathan Halpern (composer), Zoë White (cinematographer), Monique Zavistovski (editor)

PLOT: Actor and comedian Will Ferrell receives news that his friend and collaborator Harper Steele is to undergo gender transition, and the two of them decide to go on an impromptu road trip together…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The hilarious and often touching friendship between Will Ferrell and Harper Steele forms the basis for a truly crowd-pleasing documentary
  • We follow the two as they embark on a cross-country trip together, where they confront personal truths and further cement their close bond
  • Much of the film has to do with Steele’s newfound trans identity, and how she navigates her new life with the support of her closest and dearest companions, among them the Anchorman star
  • Josh Greenbaum, who previously directed Ferrell in last year’s raunchy dog comedy Strays, offers a gentler approach that handles the sensitive subject matter with dignity and grace
  • It’s a touching portrait of friendship that brought the house down at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, as it will surely do when audiences worldwide get the chance to see it

Will & Harper is streaming exclusively on Netflix from Friday 27 September 2024

Killer Heat (2024, dir. Philippe Lacôte)

CAST: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Richard Madden, Clare Holman, Babou Ceesay, Abbey Lee, Eleni Vergeti, Emmanouil Gavridakis, Christos Efthimiou, Dimitris Topalidis, Alexandros Koch, Nikolaos Kokolakis

CREW: Philippe Lacôte (director), Roberto Bentivegna and Matt Charman (writers), Brad Weston (producer), Joseph Shirley (composer), Andrew Dunn (cinematographer), Jay Cassidy and Neil Smith (editors)

PLOT: On a remote Greek island, a man (Madden) and his twin brother (also Madden) become involved in a heated, and eventually violent, love triangle. The arrival of a wounded detective known as “The Jealousy Man” (Gordon-Levitt) complicates matters further…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The game is afoot in a mysterious new crime thriller set underneath the warm Greek sun
  • Ivorian director Philippe Lacôte, here making his English-language debut, adapts the compelling short story The Jealousy Man by noted crime novelist Jo Nesbø
  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays the detective tasked with solving a complex case, while Richard Madden shines in dual roles as twin brothers opposite Shailene Woodley
  • Expect the unexpected when dire secrets are revealed, sinister motivations come to light, and nobody turns out to be safe
  • This could well be the start of a new detective film series over at Prime Video, which would put it in direct competition with Netflix’s ongoing Knives Out franchise

Killer Heat is streaming exclusively on Prime Video from Thursday 26 September 2024

Apartment 7A (2024, dir. Natalie Erika James)

CAST: Julia Garner, Dianne Wiest, Kevin McNally, Jim Sturgess, Marli Siu, Rosy McEwen, Amy Leeson, Scott Hume, Andrew Buchan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith

CREW: Natalie Erika James (director, writer), Skylar James and Christian White (writers), Michael Bay, Nina Byrne, Andrew Form, Brad Fuller, John Krasinski and Allyson Seegar (producers), Adam Price (composer), Arnau Valls Colomer (cinematographer), Andy Canny (editor)

PLOT: In 1965 New York, ambitious young dancer Terry (Garner) suffers a devastating injury, and is forced to rent a room from seemingly friendly elderly couple Minnie (Wiest) and Roman (McNally), who live in the luxurious Bramford apartment building. As Terry attempts to achieve her dream of stardom, she is suddenly thrust into a sinister position when she encounters something horrifying at the centre of the Bramford building…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This shocking prequel to the horror classic Rosemary’s Baby explores a previously unseen chain of events leading up to the ones that occurred in that film
  • Emmy-winner Julia Garner plays the unfortunate tenant that encounters something truly demonic, which may or may not have something to do with her new landlords, one of whom is played by Oscar-winning screen legend Dianne Wiest
  • Michael Bay and John Krasinski are producers on the film, clearly signalling the filmmakers’ continuing alliance after their successful collaboration on Krasinski’s A Quiet Place series
  • The film honours and respects the legacy of the classic horror, but leaves itself more than enough room to tell its own story without much need for unnecessary callbacks
  • After the unexpected critical success of The First Omen earlier this year, it’s not wise to doubt the presence of another prequel to an esteemed timeless example of the horror genre

Apartment 7A is streaming exclusively on Paramount+ from Saturday 28 September 2024

Greedy People (2024, dir. Potsy Ponciroli)

CAST: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Himesh Patel, Lily James, Tim Blake Nelson, Traci Lords, Joey Lauren Adams, Uzo Aduba, Jim Gaffigan, Simon Rex, Nina Arianda, Neva Howell, José María Yazpik, Yingling Zhu

CREW: Potsy Ponciroli (director, producer), Mike Vukadinovich (writer), David Boies, Kevin Brennan, Joshua Harris, Shannon Houchins, Chris Parker, Zack Schiller and Dylan Sellers (producers), Eric Koretz (cinematographer), Jamie Kirkpatrick (editor)

PLOT: In a small and unassuming South Carolina town, rookie cop Will (Patel) and seasoned officer Terry (Gordon-Levitt) stumble upon a pile of $1 million after an accidental death and decide to take the money for themselves. However, it’s not long before numerous residents of the community get a whiff of the cash…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Plenty of wacky incidents are abound in this darkly funny crime comedy that explores greed on both sides of the law
  • The ensemble cast is made up of quirky character actors like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tim Blake Nelson and Simon Rex, with formidable turns by recognisable faces like Yesterday stars Himesh Patel and Lily James
  • It’s a very different tone for director Potsy Ponciroli, who previously made the more serious Western thriller Old Henry, which also featured actor Tim Blake Nelson in a prominent role
  • The zany madcap humour recalls some of the Coen Brothers’ earlier screwball works, though this film has its own devilish sense of dark comedy
  • You’ll have plenty of fun watching this entire community turn itself upside down over the prospect of acquiring more than enough money to get by

Greedy People is available to rent/buy on digital platforms from Monday 23 September 2024

The Island (2024, dir. Fernando Trueba)

CAST: Matt Dillon, Aida Folch, Juan Pablo Urrego, Kika Georgiou, Polydoros Vogiatzis, Marina Argyropoulou

CREW: Fernando Trueba (director, writer, producer), Rylend Grant (writer), Dago García and Cristina Huete (producers), Zbigniew Preisner (composer), Sergio Iván Castaño (cinematographer), Marta Velasco (editor)

PLOT: On a pristine remote Greek island, Alex (Folch) is hired as the new waitress at a boutique seaside restaurant. She soon falls for the restaurant’s reclusive American manager Max (Dillon), but after unearthing some disturbing details about Max’s mysterious past, she finds herself in a dangerous situation…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Sexual tension gives way to something more sinister in this engrossing psychological thriller
  • The film – released as Haunted Heart in some parts of the world – features an alluring central performance by Matt Dillon, in a role not too far removed from the one he played in Lars von Trier’s The House That Jack Built (though hopefully not as serial killer coded)
  • The beautiful Greek seaside provides a stunning backdrop to the intimate and mysterious character drama
  • Certain reveals will have you second-guessing everyone’s intentions, no matter how honourable they may appear to be
  • By the end, you’ll be so wrapped up in the intrigue that you may just forget to breathe!

The Island is available to rent/buy on digital platforms from Monday 23 September 2024

When she experiences the full breadth of Regina’s mean nature, Cady teams with outcast students Janis (Caplan) and Damian (Franzese) for a plan to infiltrate the Plastics and dispose Regina as “Queen Bee”…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The modern teen classic gets a “so fetch” big screen re-release in time for its landmark 20th anniversary
  • The film launched then-unknown actors like Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried into the A-list, while it proved to be an iconic role for then-teen star Lindsay Lohan
  • It has endured a long-lasting legacy within pop culture thanks to its many quotable lines from Tina Fey’s script, which eventually formed the basis for a successful stage musical adaptation (which was also turned into a film earlier this year)
  • You can also hear our editor Jack Martin and his teen goddaughter talk about their own appreciation for the film on this month’s edition of the Film Feeder podcast – watch/listen to it right here!
  • With its hilarious and ultimately timeless takedown of high school society, this is a must-watch for anyone who’s ever gone through (or is going through) the trials and tribulations of teenhood

Shaun of the Dead (2004, dir. Edgar Wright)

Unfortunately, the zombie apocalypse has just begun, and Shaun – along with his lazy best friend Ed (Frost) – must try and save Liz from the oncoming horde of undead people by making their way to the one place he knows they’ll be safe: the Winchester pub…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Edgar Wright’s riotous “rom-zom-com” marks its 20th anniversary with a glorious return to cinemas
  • Highly anticipated at the time after the cult success of Wright and Simon Pegg’s sitcom Spaced, the film became an instant worldwide hit and launched both filmmaker and actor into the mainstream
  • It forms the first part of Wright’s “Cornetto Trilogy”, which also consists of Hot Fuzz and The World’s End, and is named after a distinct flavour of ice cream that appears in each film
  • Today, it is recognised as not just a cult classic among genre fans, but as a genuinely funny, intense, and surprisingly emotional British comedy that ranks among the best
  • If you’ve never had the opportunity to experience the hilarious zombie mayhem on the big screen, now’s your chance to take advantage of this slice of fried gold!

Shaun of the Dead is showing in cinemas from Friday 27 September 2024

Art’s rampage continues in Terrifier 2, where he targets teenager Sienna Shaw (LaVera) and her younger brother Jonathan (Fullam) one year later…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The two most outrageous slasher films of the last decade are being projected onto the big screen for the very first time
  • Filmmaker Damien Leone made waves with his gory first entry, which was promptly outdone by its far more ambitious follow-up
  • It introduced wider audiences to the modern slasher icon known as Art the Clown, who with these films made his feature debut after previously appearing in short films and horror anthologies
  • With the third movie due out in a matter of weeks, this is the perfect time to catch up on the violent madness – or to simply revisit it if you’re already a fan!
