This Week’s Movie Menu (24 February – 2 March 2025)

Dive into our latest round-up of the week’s biggest film releases, from a poignant Las Vegas character study to an unusual time-travel adventure…

Movie of the Week

The Last Showgirl (dir. Gia Coppola)

CREW: Gia Coppola (director), Kate Gersten (writer), Natalie Farrey and Robert Schwartzman (producers), Andrew Wyatt (composer), Autumn Durald Arkapaw (cinematographer), Blair McClendon and Cam McLauchlin (editors)

PLOT: In Las Vegas, Shelly Gardner (Anderson) has been performing in the same revue for decades and remains as dedicated to it as she was when she first started, even favouring it over raising her daughter Hannah (Lourd). However, when producer Eddie (Bautista) announces that the show is closing, Shelly begins to worry about what she will have to do with herself…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Pamela Anderson gives everything she’s got into the lead role of director Gia Coppola’s intimate character study
  • The former Baywatch icon delivers her best-ever performance in a role that perfectly mirrors the actor’s own struggles with ageism in a shallow and youthful industry
  • A strong ensemble supports Anderson at every turn, including Dave Bautista, Kiernan Shipka, and a scene-stealing turn by Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis
  • Coppola brings out the gritty beauty of the Las Vegas Strip with some avant-garde cinematography that compliments the protagonist’s personal journey
  • It’s a glorious comeback role that only Pamela Anderson could play, and should hopefully give her some newfound respect among her Hollywood peers after years of humiliation
