This Week’s Movie Menu (26 January – 1 February 2026)

If you’re in the mood for a good laugh, a good cry, or just about any other good emotion, then you’ll definitely want to check out this week’s stellar line-up of film releases, including a romantic-comedy where the emphasis is on “comedy”, a terrifying simian horror, and a loving homage of French New Wave cinema…

Movie of the Week

Is This Thing On? (dir. Bradley Cooper)

CAST: Will Arnett, Laura Dern, Andra Day, Bradley Cooper, Amy Sedaris, Sean Hayes, Christine Ebersole, Ciarán Hinds, Scott Icenogle, Chloe Radcliffe, Jordan Jensen, Peyton Manning, Reggie Conquest, James Tom, Gabe Fazio, Blake Kane, Calvin Knegten, Derek Gaines, Matt Richards

CREW: Bradley Cooper (director, writer, producer), Will Arnett (writer, producer), Mark Chappell (writer), Weston Middleton and Kris Thykier (producers), James Newberry (composer), Matthew Libatique (cinematographer), Charlie Greene (editor)

PLOT: Alex (Arnett) and Tess (Dern) are a married couple who have amicably decided to separate, but as they both struggle to adjust to their new lives, Alex takes an unexpected shine to stand-up comedy which ends up helping both of them in unexpected ways…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Bradley Cooper’s third directorial outing is his most grounded and funniest to date, not to mention one of his most surprisingly endearing
  • Cooper also takes on a supporting role, allowing Will Arnett (who also co-writes and co-produces with Cooper) and Oscar-winner Laura Dern to shine as the lead couple who are helped by the power of comedy
  • It has an unlikely source of inspiration, with the story being loosely based on the life and early career of UK comedian John Bishop
  • The stand-up circuit is treated with care and respect, as is the central romance which unfolds with genuine warmth and even a great deal of maturity
  • It’s a lovely story with strong characters and a tender narrative that solidifies Cooper as a real natural behind the camera

Is This Thing On? is showing in cinemas from Friday 30 January 2026

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

Primate (dir. Johannes Roberts)

CAST: Johnny Sequoyah, Jessica Alexander, Troy Kotsur, Victoria Wyant, Gia Hunter, Benjamin Cheng, Charlie Mann, Tienne Simon, Miguel Torres Umba, Kae Alexander, Amina Abdi, Albert Magashi

CREW: Johannes Roberts (director, writer), Ernest Riera (writer), Walter Hamada, John Hodges and Bradley Pilz (producers), Adrian Johnston (composer), Stephen Murphy (cinematographer), Peter Gvozdas (editor)

PLOT: Lucy (Sequoyah) returns home from college to Hawaii to visit her family, including their pet chimpanzee Ben (Umba) who suddenly becomes deadly when he is bitten by a rabid animal…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • A killer chimpanzee headlines this bonkers creature horror which is not only entertaining but often extremely intimidating
  • Director Johannes Roberts takes his horror expertise from films like 47 Meters Down and Storage 24, and applies it to something that will give you nightmares about chimpanzees more than Nope’s own memorable killer ape
  • Ben, the murderous chimp, is played by actor Miguel Torres Umba via a wholly convincing practical suit which helps transforms the performer into a believable and menacing figure
  • It doesn’t hold back on the kills, with various people getting brutally offed during some violent encounters that get more sinister as the film goes along
  • Even if the idea of a killer chimpanzee sounds rather silly, you’ll come out shaking with fear as it reinforces the original and highly plausible concept with a gleeful nastiness

Primate is showing in cinemas from Friday 30 January 2026

Nouvelle Vague (dir. Richard Linklater)

CAST: Guillaume Marbeck, Zoey Deutch, Aubry Dullin, Bruno Dreyfürst, Benjamin Clery, Matthieu Penchinat, Pauline Belle, Blaise Pettebone, Benoît Bouthors, Paolo Luka Noé, Adrien Rouyard, Jade Phan-Gia, Jodie Ruth-Forest, Antoine Besson, Franck Cicurel, Roxane Rivière, Jean-Jacques Le Vessier, Côme Thieulin, Laurent Mothe, Jonas Marmy, Niko Ravel

CREW: Richard Linklater (director), Michèle Halberstadt (writer, producer), Holly Gent, Laetitia Masson and Vincent Palmo Jr. (writers), Laurent Pétin (producer), David Chambille (cinematographer), Catherine Schwartz (cinematographer), Catherine Schwartz (editor)

PLOT: In 1959, French film critic Jean-Luc Godard (Marbeck) sets out to make his own film, which would go on to become the influential French New Wave classic Breathless…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Richard Linklater presents a deeply loving homage to the films of the French New Wave with a dramatised look at the making of an early example of the cinematic movement
  • Linklater hires numerous actors to closely resemble its real-life filmmaking legends, among them French actor as Guillaume Marbeck as Jean-Luc Godard and Zoey Deutch as his American star Jean Seberg
  • The filmmaker also shoots the film in stark black-and-white within the Academy ratio, just as Godard’s own Breathless was shot back in the day
  • It competed for the Palme D’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, and scored one of the highest acquisitions of the edition when Netflix paid $4 million for US domestic distribution (Altitude is handling it in the UK)
  • As well as being a resounding love letter to the French New Wave, it is also a vital tribute to filmic storytellers whose eccentric visions have the power to transform how we view cinema as a whole

Nouvelle Vague is showing in cinemas from Friday 30 January 2026

Shelter (dir. Ric Roman Waugh)

CAST: Jason Statham, Bill Nighy, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Bodhi Rae Breathnach

CREW: Ric Roman Waugh (director), Ward Parry (writer), Jon Berg, Brendon Boyea, John Friedberg, Greg Silverman and Jason Statham (producers), David Buckley (composer), Martin Ahlgren (cinematographer), Matthew Newman (editor)

PLOT: Mason (Statham), a reclusive former assassin living on a remote island, ends up saving young orphan Jessie (Breathnach) from a deadly storm, which ignites a series of events that force him to go after his old enemies in order to protect her…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Jason Statham is at his gruffest in this gritty action-thriller that gives him some of the more bone-breaking moments in his recent strand of films
  • He’s teamed with director Ric Roman Waugh, previously behind the Gerard Butler vehicles Angel Has Fallen and Greenland (as well as the latter’s upcoming sequel)
  • Starring alongside Statham are notable names like Bill Nighy, Naomi Ackie and Daniel Mays, while young Bodhi Rae Breathnach more than holds her own opposite the action lead
  • The action is suspenseful, not to mention executed with a rough and grounded lens that makes each punch, kick and gunshot feel all the more painful
  • It’s solid viewing for anyone wanting to see one of their favourite modern action heroes in a much more realistic setting while still kicking as much ass as possible

Shelter is showing in cinemas from Friday 30 January 2026

Kangaroo (dir. Kate Woods)

CAST: Ryan Corr, Rachel House, Lily Whiteley, Brooke Satchwell, Deborah Mailman, Rarriwuy Hick, Rick Donald, Ryan Clark, Wayne Blair, Trisha Morton-Thomas, Emily Taheny, Ernie Dingo

CREW: Kate Woods (director), Harry Cripps and Melina Marchetta (writers), Rachel Clements, David Jowsey, Angela Littlejohn, Trisha Morton-Thomas and Greer Simpkin (producers), Josie Mann and Matteo Zingales (composers), Kieran Fowler (cinematographer), Chris Plummer (editor)

PLOT: In Western Australia, disgraced TV personality Chris Masterman (Corr) finds himself stranded in an Outback town where he forms an unexpected friendship with 12-year-old Indigenous girl Charlie (Whiteley), with whom he begins rescuing and rehabilitating injured orphan joeys…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The heartwarming Australian family drama hops all the way over to the UK with a mission to charm British audiences with its adorable nature
  • It is loosely based on the real-life work of Chris Barns, the founder of the Kangaroo Sanctuary which gained international attention when one of his joeys named Roger went viral for its muscular physique
  • The film was shot largely on location in Alice Springs where the actual Sanctuary is located, with numerous joeys being used for many of the film’s cutest moments
  • While the kangaroos are undoubtedly the biggest scene-stealers, there’s plenty of sweetness among the human cast as well, with actors Ryan Corr and Lily Whiteley sharing a nice on-screen bond
  • It will certainly make you want to travel all the way to Oz and experience its pristine wildlife, including getting up close to the titular native animals themselves!

Kangaroo is showing in cinemas from Friday 30 January 2026

Rabbit Trap (dir. Bryn Chainey)

CAST: Dev Patel, Rosy McEwen, Jade Croot, Nicholas Sampson

CREW: Bryn Chainey (director, writer), Alex Ashworth, Lawrence Inglee, Elisa Lleras, Sean Marley, Martin Metz, Daniel Noah, Adrian Politowski and Elijah Wood (producers), Lucrecia Dalt (composer), Andreas Johannessen (cinematographer), Brett W. Bachman and Sam Sneade (editors)

PLOT: In 1976, Darcy (Patel) and Daphne (McEwen) are a married musician couple who relocate to an isolated cabin in Wales, where they intend to complete their new album, but after accidentally recording a mystical sound whilst out in the wilderness, they are visited by a mysterious child (Croot) who causes them to disconnect from reality…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This chilling psychological thriller plays around with folklore and feelings of isolation in ways that remind you fondly of films like Starve Acre and The Witch
  • Dev Patel and Rosy McEwen are a formidable pair as they experience first-hand a series of reality-warping encounters that will give you nightmares
  • It’s the feature directorial debut of Bryn Chainey, whose award-winning shorts gained him serious attention at various international film festivals such as Berlin, Brussels and Warsaw
  • The haunting musical score by Lucrecia Dalt was inspired by experimental electronic musicians like Delia Derbyshire, who most famously created the theme for Doctor Who
  • You’ll feel yourself on edge at all times as you witness the terrifying events that lead to an impossibly shocking outcome for our leads

Rabbit Trap is showing in cinemas from Friday 30 January 2026

Iron Lung (dir. Mark Fischbach)

CAST: Mark Fischbach, Caroline Rose Kaplan, Seán McLoughlin, David Szymanski, Troy Baker, Elsie Lovelock, Isaac McKee

CREW: Mark Fischbach (director, writer, editor), Jeff Guerrero and Will Hyde (producers), Andrew Hulshult (composer), Philip Roy (cinematographer), Marc Schneider (editor)

PLOT: In a post-apocalyptic future where a mysterious event known as “The Quiet Rapture” caused all the universe’s stars and habitable planets to suddenly disappear, a convict (Fischbach) is sent to a desolate moon to explore an ocean of blood via a tiny submarine called the Iron Lung…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • YouTube sensation Mark Fischbach – who you may know better as Markiplier – steps into the world of Hollywood with this stylish video game adaptation
  • It is based on the popular indie game of the same name, which originally found success on Windows platforms before being released on the Nintendo Switch and most recently on the PlayStation 5
  • Fischbach not only stars in the film as the unnamed convict at the centre of the madness, but he also directs, writes and co-edits in a true announcement within the realm of filmmaking
  • He brings a dark and intimidating visual style to the terrifying narrative, with scares around every dark corner as well as a little bit of claustrophobia for extra discomfort
  • It’ll be easy to put Fischbach alongside other prominent YouTubers-turned-horror-filmmakers like the Philippou brothers and Chris Stuckmann once he unleashes his passion project unto the world

Iron Lung is showing in cinemas from Thursday 29 January 2026

Another World (dir. Tommy Kai Chung Ng)

PLOT: Gudo (Chung) is a spirit guide who is tasked with helping the souls of the deceased move on to their next lives, but when he comes across young Yuri (Choi) he embarks on a perilous journey to prevent her rare curse from upsetting the balance of the universe…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The feature directorial debut of Hong Kong animator Tommy Kai Chung Ng is a gorgeously imaginative adventure that offers a compelling sense of adventure
  • It is based on the fantasy novel Sennenki: Thousand-Year Journey of an Oni by award-winning Japanese author Naka Saijo, and visually aligns itself with traditional Japanese anime stylings
  • You’ll be transported to a creative vision of the afterlife that few animated films, even Pixar’s Oscar-winning Soul, can claim to stretch as far as this movie does
  • At its centre is a touching story about discovering and embracing human emotions, which the two leads embody with rich and tender personalities that are easy to love
  • Lovers of animation will find this to be a beautiful addition to their collection, and potentially a new cult classic in the making

Another World is showing in cinemas from Friday 30 January 2026
