FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The early-2000s superhero classic, which introduced audiences around the world to the famous Marvel webslinger, swings its way back into cinemas

  • Sam Raimi brought his trademark campiness to the world-famous origin story, with Tobey Maguire making the title role his own opposite Willem Dafoe’s equally iconic Green Goblin
  • In the UK, its release brought about the introduction of the 12A certificate, after the backlash from its original 12 rating that prevented anyone under that age (i.e. most of its target audience) from seeing it

  • It was Miyazaki’s third directorial feature after Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and was originally released in its native Japan as a double-bill with fellow anime legend Isao Takahata’s more adult-oriented Grave of the Fireflies
  • The film achieved instant international acclaim, with the title character becoming hugely popular to where he even became Studio Ghibli’s official mascot (he shows up in the company’s logo)
