PLOT: Marvin Gable (Quan), a seemingly mild-mannered real estate agent, has a violent past he is keen to stay away from, but when his former partner-in-crime Rose (DeBose) comes back into his life, he is forced to face off against a close threat…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan finally gets the lead role he deserves in this fun and action-packed new blockbuster
  • He is joined by fellow Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose on a journey filled with plenty of crowd-pleasing violence
  • Action director and former stunt performer/coordinator David Leitch is one of the producers, so you can absolutely count on some extremely lively fight choreography
  • It’s also a mini-Goonies reunion, as Sean Astin – Quan’s co-star from that family classic – pops up in a small but memorable role
  • With plenty of fun action and hilarious comedy, this is an ideal pick for a Valentine’s Day viewing that will satisfy both parties

Love Hurts is showing in cinemas from Friday 7 February 2025

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

PLOT: In a crime-ridden city, a police officer and his canine sidekick are gravely injured whilst on duty, but after a life-saving surgery where the dog’s head is placed on the officer’s body, the hero known as Dog Man is born, drawing the wrath of wannabe supervillain Petey the cat (Davidson)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The popular children’s book series gets an animated film adaptation by DreamWorks Animation that is just as delightfully silly
  • Creator Dav Pilkey is also behind the iconic Captain Underpants book series, which DreamWorks Animation also turned into a film back in 2017
  • A starry voice cast including Lil Rel Howery and SNL alumni Pete Davidson eagerly support the silent titular hero, whose barks and growls are provided by the film’s director Peter Hastings
  • The animation is not only close to Pilkey’s original designs, but is also heavily stylised with a slower frame rate in a similar fashion to the likes of The Peanuts Movie and the Spider-Verse series
  • Kids will love seeing their favourite human-dog hybrid on the big screen, while adults can appreciate the fast-paced and giggle-inducing comedy

Dog Man is showing in cinemas from Friday 7 February 2025

September 5 (dir. Tim Fehlbaum)

PLOT: In 1972, during the Munich Summer Olympics, an American sports broadcasting team unexpectedly shifts its focus to live coverage of Israeli athletes being taken hostage by armed militants…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The shocking events of September 5, 1972, when the world witnessed the massacre of Israeli Olympians, are told from an equally shocking but essential new perspective
  • Director and co-writer Tim Fehlbaum shifts the focus to the media covering the games and eventually the ultimately tragic hostage taking on that fateful day
  • The ensemble cast, including Peter Sarsgaard and Past Lives star John Magaro, expertly convey the real-time stresses of covering such a horrific incident, and the moral consequences of showing it at all
  • Some tight editing gives it the feel of an action-thriller, leaving your heart skipping a few beats as one tense moment after another unfolds in the Oscar-nominated script
  • It plays a vital role in assessing the media’s part in the escalation of certain events, but also its importance as a harbinger of truth in an era where news is contested more than ever

September 5 is showing in cinemas from Thursday 6 February 2025

The Fire Inside (dir. Rachel Morrison)

  • The fierce and inspirational true story of Claressa Shields is dramatized in this moving and surprising sports drama
  • Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison makes her directorial debut, with Oscar-winning Moonlight filmmaker Barry Jenkins in her corner as the film’s screenwriter and producer
  • Ryan Destiny puts in a striking breakthrough performance as Shields, and shares formidable chemistry with her equally impressive co-star Brian Tyree Henry
  • The film initially lures you in with the reliable sports movie conventions, but then turns into a much more fascinating and depressingly realistic look at what happens after the moment when such a movie ends
  • It’s one of the more engaging and genuinely original movies of its kind to come along in a good while, so don’t miss your chance to see it on the big screen!

The Fire Inside is showing in cinemas from Friday 7 February 2025

The Seed of the Sacred Fig (dir. Mohammad Rasoulof)

CAST: Missagh Zareh, Soheila Golestani, Mahsa Rostami, Setareh Maleki, Niousha Akhshi, Amineh Mazrouie Arani, Reza Akhlaghirad, Shiva Ordooie

CREW: Mohammad Rasoulof (director, writer, producer), Rozita Hendijanian, Amin Sadraei, Jean-Christophe Simon and Mani Tilgner (producers), Karzan Mahmood (composer), Pooyan Aghababaei (cinematographer), Andrew Bird (editor)

PLOT: In the Iranian capital of Tehran, devout lawyer Iman (Zareh) is appointed as an investigative judge amidst severe political protests in the country. However, he soon becomes increasingly paranoid, which puts him at extreme odds against his family, especially after his gun goes missing…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof presents a shocking and deeply psychological depiction of political unrest in the authoritative state of Iran
  • Rasoulof’s film, which is highly critical of the Iranian government, condemned the director to a lengthy prison sentence, forcing him and several cast and crew members to flee the country and seek asylum in Germany, where the smuggled footage was edited and completed
  • It made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme D’Or and won the Special Jury Prize
  • Despite being an Iranian film, it was entered as Germany’s official entry for the International Feature Film Oscar – and is currently nominated for the accolade itself
  • Whether you’re moved by its profound backstory or the compelling themes of persecution and paranoia, this is a film that should not be overlooked under any circumstances

The Seed of the Sacred Fig is showing in cinemas from Friday 7 February 2025

PLOT: In Ireland, Michael (Abbott) lives a secluded life on a shepherding farm with his ailing father Ray (Meaney), but an increasingly tense conflict with rival farmer Gary (Ready) and his son Jack (Keoghan) force him into a series of grim events…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This bleak revenge thriller explores the deep anger and resentment of two rival shepherding families in the rural Irish countryside
  • It’s a powerful first feature from writer-director Christopher Andrews, who was recently nominated for Best Debut Director at the British Independent Film Awards
  • Christopher Abbott and Oscar-nominee Barry Keoghan put in a pair of exemplary performances as the young men drawn into ferocious countryside conflict
  • There are some shocking scenes of ruthless violence that draw out some raw human emotion which will stay with you long afterwards

PLOT: The story of how the iconic band Led Zeppelin formed and took the world by storm – all within a single year…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Immerse yourself in the world of Led Zeppelin as they take you through their unique path towards music infamy
  • It is the first-ever officially sanctioned movie biopic of the band, which until now has routinely turned down requests to bring their story to the screen
  • The documentary, from award-winning filmmaker Bernard MacMahon, features fresh interviews with the band members, as well as never-before-seen footage of their backstage antics and on-stage performances
  • A rough cut of the film debuted to rapturous applause at last year’s Venice Film Festival, so just imagine what the final cut must be like!

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Legendary filmmaker Chantal Akerman’s slice-of-life masterpiece is coming to the big screen, almost fifty years after its debut
  • The late writer-director employs a minimalist approach, with long static takes of mundane real-time tasks making up most of its gargantuan 3+ hour runtime
