This Week’s Movie Menu (6 – 12 October 2025)

It’s time to log on to a brand-new week of movies, as well as the launch of the annual BFI London Film Festival (which you can expect reviews starting to pour in from very soon!), but among the latest official releases is a tech-driven blockbuster, a couple of animal-centric horror movies, and a psychological cruise…

Movie of the Week

Tron: Ares (dir. Joachim Rønning)

CAST: Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, Jeff Bridges, Sarah Desjardins

PLOT: Ares (Leto), a highly sophisticated Program from the digital world of The Grid, is sent to the real world on a dangerous mission…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The long-in-development second sequel to Disney’s 80s cult classic Tron brings the computer chaos to our world for the first time
  • Jared Leto stars and produces as the titular character, a mysterious new anti-hero with an agenda that may or may not spell doom for humanity and digital kind alike
  • Director Joachim Rønning, previously of Young Woman and the Sea (also for Disney), stages some exciting sequences that shows exactly how the technology of The Grid works in our more realistic environment
  • In addition to stunning visual effects, the film also contains a stellar ensemble cast – from Past Lives’s Greta Lee to original star Jeff Bridges – as well as a thumping soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
  • It’s a blockbuster that offers plenty of action and intriguing ideas about modern technology which everyone can easily enjoy

Tron: Ares is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 October 2025

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

I Swear (dir. Kirk Jones)

CAST: Robert Aramayo, Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson, Peter Mullan, Steven Cree, Adam McNamara, Scott Ellis Watson

CREW: Kirk Jones (director, writer, producer), Georgia Bayliff and Piers Tempest (producers), Stephen Rennicks (composer), James Blann (cinematographer), Sam Sneade (editor)

PLOT: In 1980s Scotland, John Davidson (Aramayo) grows up with a diagnosis of Tourette’s syndrome which leaves him an outcast from a society that doesn’t understand his condition, until he is inspired to come out of his shell and educate people about it…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The life and experiences of Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson is dramatised in an uplifting crowd-pleaser that shows what it’s like to live with such a condition
  • Robert Aramayo, known to Lord of the Rings fans as Elrond in the Amazon series The Rings of Power, gives plenty of life to Davidson and his numerous tics which are often NSFW (hence the title)
  • You really feel for this on-screen portrayal of Davidson as he encounters ostracisation from all corners of his life, which writer-director Kirk Jones carefully depicts without veering too far into emotional manipulation
  • Those who may also have Tourette’s or any other neurodiverse condition can comfortably become engrossed in the character’s journey without feeling as though they’re being mocked or talked down to
  • With plenty of heart and feel-good storytelling, it’s a film that offers sensitivity as well as plenty of shocking language!

I Swear is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 October 2025

Good Boy (dir. Ben Leonberg)

CAST: Indy, Shane Jensen, Arielle Friedman, Larry Fessenden, Stuart Rudin, Anya Krawcheck

CREW: Ben Leonberg (director, writer, producer), Alex Cannon (writer), Kari Fischer (producer), Sam Boase-Miller (composer), Wade Grebnoel (cinematographer), Curtis Roberts (editor)

PLOT: Indy (Indy), a dog, moves with its owner Todd (Jensen) to a rural farmhouse that is occupied by supernatural entities that only Indy can see, and it must do whatever it can to protect Todd from succumbing to their influence…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This chilling supernatural horror takes the unique perspective of an unsung hero in such movies: the protagonist’s loyal dog
  • Said dog is played by a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever named Indy, who also happens to be the lovable pet of filmmaker Ben Leonberg
  • The director employs numerous innovative camera tricks to show events from the literal point of view of the dog, who gives an exceptionally emotional performance without any dialogue or CGI enhancements
  • Leonberg’s film and his canine star earned high praise after its world premiere at SXSW Film Festival, to where the latter received the festival’s “Howl of Fame Award” for best canine performance, and the trailer recently went viral after viewers googled whether or not the dog makes it to the end (an understandable concern)
  • Fans of Paranormal Activity and just about any other haunted house movie will greatly appreciate this spooky and surprisingly emotional twist that will reaffirm your love for dogs

Good Boy is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 October 2025

Plainclothes (dir. Carmen Emmi)

CAST: Tom Blyth, Russell Tovey, Maria Dizzia, Christian Cooke, Gabe Fazio, Amy Forsyth, John Bedford Lloyd, Darius Fraser, Alessandra Ford Balazs

CREW: Carmen Emmi (director, writer), Vanessa Pantley and Eric Podwall (producers), Emily Wells (composer), Ethan Palmer (cinematographer), Erik Vogt-Nilsen (editor)

PLOT: In 1990s New York, Lucas (Blyth) is a young police officer tasked with going undercover and entrapping gay men with the promise of a casual hook-up before they are arrested, but things become complicated when he meets and falls for Andrew (Tovey), one of his targets…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The compelling feature debut of writer-director Carmen Emmi takes a fresh and often upsetting view of 20th century homophobia
  • Tom Blyth, previously seen being intimidating as young Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, delivers an impressive lead turn as a morally conflicted young cop
  • He shares intimate scenes with Russell Tovey as his on-screen love interest, and the two have passionate chemistry that will send you on an emotional rollercoaster
  • At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it had its world premiere, the film was awarded a Special Jury Award for its fiery ensemble cast
  • It’s frighteningly timely stuff as LGBTQ+ rights are under threat across the world, with this film shedding light on a not-too-long-ago period when persecution for being gay was still heartbreakingly lawful

Plainclothes is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 October 2025

Night of the Zoopocalypse (dirs. Ricardo Curtis and Rodrigo Perez-Castro)

CAST: Gabbi Kosmidis, David Harbour, Scott Thompson, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Pierre Simpson, Heather Loreto, Kyle Derek, Christina Nova, Bryn McAuley, Carolyn Scott, Rob Tinkler, Joshua Graham

CREW: Ricardo Curtis and Rodrigo Perez-Castro (directors), Steven Hoban (writer, producer), James Kee (writer), Yohann Comte, Joe Iacono, Wes Lui and Mark Smith (producers), Dan Levy (composer), Matt Ahrens and Gilad Carmel (editors)

PLOT: When a meteorite crashes into a zoo, its mysterious substance unleashes a virus that transforms the animals into ravenous zombies, leaving only young wolf Gracie (Kosmidis), mountain lion Dan (Harbour) and a handful of others to escape the virus and save the day…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Family-friendly antics are mixed with full-on horror in a film that audiences of all ages can comfortably enjoy
  • The animated movie is loosely inspired by a short story from Clive Barker, the legendary writer known for stories that became horror classics like Hellraiser and Candyman
  • A voice cast that includes character actors David Harbour and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee bring life to animal characters who range from heroic to all-out terrifying
  • It really leans on the horror angle (albeit a kid-friendly type) with spooky lighting and creatively monstrous designs that will give kids nightmares
  • For any horror-loving parent wanting to introduce their offspring to the genre, this is perfect for that as well as all-round fun at the movies

Night of the Zoopocalypse is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 October 2025

A Want in Her (dir. Myrid Carten)

CAST: Myrid Carten, Nuala

CREW: Myrid Carten (director, writer, cinematographer), Roisin Geraghty, Kat Mansoor and Tadhg O’Sullivan (producers), Clarice Jensen (composer), Sean Mullan and Donna Wade (cinematographers), Karen Harley (editor)

PLOT: After her troubled mother goes missing, Irish artist Myrid Carten returns from London to find her, but encounters a number of surprising obstacles that cause her to question her own history…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Myrid Carten, the acclaimed visual artist, invites viewers into a deeply personal journey that marks her filmmaking debut
  • Carten began production in 2018, with the majority of footage shot on 16mm film just before the March 2020 lockdowns, with editing taking up the next four years
  • The first-time filmmaker also splices in old home videos and ambitious art school projects to present a broader picture of her rocky family history
  • At its centre is a heartbreaking study of addiction, betrayal and the overall cost of love that Carten documents with the expertise of a seasoned veteran
  • It’s admirable to see a filmmaker open themselves and their inner troubles up to the world in such a raw manner, let alone for their debut feature!

A Want in Her is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 October 2025

Iron Ladies (dir. Daniel Draper)

CAST: Linda Allbutt, Kate Alvey, Kay Case, Betty Cook, Aggie Currie, Linda Erskine, Kate Flannery, Liz French, Lynn Gibson, Juliana Heron, Sally Higgins, Lizzie Hopley, Rose Hunter, Maxine Penkethman, Sue Piotrowski, Christine Powell, Carol Ross, Lorraine Stansbie, Kay Sutcliffe, Janet Wilson-Cunningham, Heather Wood

CREW: Daniel Draper (director, writer, producer, cinematographer), Christie Allanson (producer, editor), Cameron Brown (cinematographer)

PLOT: A group of women look back on their contributions during the Miners’ Strike of the 1980s…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • An unsung group of communal heroes are given their time to shine in a celebratory documentary that marks 40 years after the end of the Miners’ Strike
  • Numerous women involved in local strike-hit communities recall their experiences in rallying their fellow neighbours to the righteous cause of the miners’ union
  • Through in-depth interviews and archival footage, filmmaker Daniel Draper shows how the women played integral roles in fighting the oppressive Thatcher regime
  • You greatly admire the resilience and determination that is fiercely present in the interviewees, perhaps even more so than during the strike!
  • It’s a powerful bit of filmmaking that highlights the power of working-class unity and striving towards a more prosperous future for all

Iron Ladies is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 October 2025

Omar and Cedric: If This Ever Gets Weird (dir. Nicolas Jack Davies)

CAST: Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Chrissie Carnell Bixler, Teresa Suárez Cosío, Flea, John Frusciante, Tony Hajjar, Paul Hinojos, Isaiah Owens, Rick Rubin, Jon Theodore, Jeremy Ward, Jim Ward

CREW: Nicolas Jack Davies (director), Johann Scheerer (producer), Joe Simon (cinematographer), David Atkinson and Gary Forrester (editors)

PLOT: A look at the oddball relationship between era-defining musicians Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala…

FIVE REASONS TO BE REASON:

  • Two of the most unusual music artists in modern history get an in-depth new documentary all about their unlikely rise to fame
  • Compiled from hundreds of hours of old footage recorded by the duo during their younger years, the film takes audiences on a whirlwind journey through their lives and careers
  • Their formation of rock bands like The Mars Volta and At The Drive In is covered, as are some of their less desirable qualities that are admirably put on full display
  • We see the pressures of fame and excess put a strain on their lifelong friendship, and how they ultimately overcame them with fierce passion for their eccentric brand of music
  • It’s a film that gives numerous other musician bio-docs a run for their money with its authenticity and retro aesthetic

Omar and Cedric: If This Ever Gets Weird is showing in cinemas from Friday 10 October 2025

What’s Showing At Home This Week?

The Woman in Cabin 10 (dir. Simon Stone)

PLOT: Laura Blacklock (Knightley), a journalist covering the maiden voyage of a luxury yacht run by wealthy entrepreneur Richard Bullmer (Pearce), witnesses a passenger being thrown overboard, only to later find that all the guests and crew members are all accounted for…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Keira Knightley is in full paranoid mode as the lead of this nail-biting suspense thriller that may even put Hitchcock to shame
  • Adapted from Ruth Ware’s novel of the same name by director and co-writer Simon Stone, it gleefully plays with expectations at every turn in ways that will have you second-guessing what you think you might have seen
  • Knightley is just one of numerous A-list talent among the cast, including fellow Oscar-nominee Guy Pearce, Loki star Gugu Mbatha-Raw and character actors Hannah Waddingham and David Morrissey
  • You’ll feel all kinds of sick (and not just sea-sick) at the levels of gaslighting and psychological torment that may or may not be going on here
  • For lovers of a good old-fashioned murder-mystery with a cerebral twist, this is a devilishly fun outing that may put you off luxury yachts for life!

Maintenance Required (dir. Lacey Uhlemeyer)

CAST: Madelaine Petsch, Jacob Scipio, Madison Bailey, Katy O’Brian, Inanna Sarkis, Matteo Lane, Jim Gaffigan

CREW: Lacey Uhlemeyer (director, writer), Erin Falconer (writer), Rhym Guisse, Matt Luber, Lena Roklin and Matt Williams (producers), Rob Lord (composer), Hamish Doyne-Ditmas (cinematographer), Bruce Green (editor)

PLOT: Charlie (Petsch) is the fiercely independent owner of an all-female mechanic shop who, after business rival Beau (Scipio) moves in next door, turns to an anonymous online confidant for comfort – unaware that she’s actually talking to Beau, who in turn doesn’t know he’s chatting with Charlie…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This chipper romantic-comedy shows how love has the ability to form unexpected connections in the digital age
  • If the basic plot sounds vaguely familiar, that’s because it’s loosely inspired by Hungarian writer Miklós László’s play Parfumerie, famously adapted into the 1940 classic The Shop Around the Corner and, more recently, the 1998 Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan vehicle You’ve Got Mail
  • Riverdale star Madeleine Petsch, recently seen in Renny Harlin’s Strangers trilogy, shares intimate chemistry both online and offline with Bad Boys breakout Jacob Scipio
  • In addition to being a more traditional romance, it’s also an ode to female friendships, as represented in supporting characters played by Love Lies Bleeding’s Katy O’Brian and Outer Banks star Madison Bailey
  • It’s got all the ingredients you could ever want out of a romantic-comedy, not to mention plenty of heart that’ll have you swooning as much as you will laughing

Maintenance Required is streaming exclusively on Prime Video from Wednesday 8 October 2025

John Candy: I Like Me (dir. Colin Hanks)

PLOT: A look at the life and career of beloved character actor John Candy…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • You know him from films like Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck, but this incredibly heartfelt bio-doc dives deep into who John Candy truly was
  • Under the direction of actor Colin Hanks, the film pieces together archive footage and never-before-seen home videos provided by Candy’s surviving family members
  • It’s a star-studded affair on both sides of the camera, with the likes of Steve Martin and Tom Hanks (Colin’s dad) being interviewed, and fellow Canadian acting giant Ryan Reynolds producing the film
  • All of them unite to share their fondest memories of working with or simply being friends with the actor, who sadly passed away in 1994 at the age of 43
  • Coming to screens shortly after opening this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the film is a beautiful tribute to an endearing screen legend that may well cause floods of tears

  • The stop-motion fantasy-musical is filled with plenty of familiar Burton trademarks, from an eccentric gothic style to the inclusion of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter among the cast
  • Burton’s regular composer Danny Elfman also provides a memorable musical score and a set of bouncy original songs filled with suitably macabre lyrics
  • It was a modest hit at the box office and earned critical praise, as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature (losing to fellow stop-motion juggernaut Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit)
  • Lovers of the filmmaker’s distinct storytelling and unusual style will adore experiencing this underrated classic all over again

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The feature directorial debut of anime legend Satoshi Kon makes a dazzling return to cinemas with an all-new 4K restoration
  • Kon, known for films like Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers and most notably Paprika, adapted the novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis by Yoshikazu Takeuchi into a stylish psychological thriller
  • Armed with striking visuals within its meticulous hand-drawn animation, the film was well-received by international critics and is cited as the film that brought Kon (who sadly passed away in 2010) to everyone’s attention
  • Prominent filmmakers have expressed their admiration for the film, including Darren Aronofsky who not only adapted the film’s iconic bath scene into his own Requiem for a Dream but is also rumoured to have based his Oscar-winning movie Black Swan heavily on it
