FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • James Gunn launches the newly revitalised DC Universe into the stratosphere with an all-new take on arguably the most iconic superhero of all time
  • David Corenswet fills the red-and-blue suit as everyone’s favourite Krypton-born hero, and he easily makes the role his own with a charming and lovable rendition

  • Director-writer Gunn’s focus is on the necessity of a do-gooder like Superman in a more cynical world, adding a fascinating new layer that makes this story resonate very well for our current times

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Johnny Depp directs his first film in nearly thirty years with the lightly comedic tale of an artist on the cusp of greatness, adapted from Dennis McIntyre’s play of the same name
  • Acclaimed actor Riccardo Scamarcio delivers an impassioned performance as the titular Italian artist, while the supporting cast includes Adolescence star Stephen Graham and screen legend Al Pacino
  • Depp brings to life a vivid portrayal of early 20th century Paris and the pressure-cooker environment for artists like Modigliani to manoeuvre their way through
  • The film was in development for many years, as early as the 1970s when Pacino caught wind of the original play, and went through numerous filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola before Pacino finally asked Depp to direct
  • It’s a bold and striking vision filled with plenty of eccentric personality that captures the very essence of its central artist

Modigliani: Three Days on the Wing of Madness is showing in cinemas from Friday 11 July 2025

  • It comes from filmmaker Jonás Trueba, who also collaborated with lead actors Itsaso Arana and Vito Sanz on the layered script

  • Its offbeat quirky nature, paired with much deeper themes that may resonate with couples in similar situations, are sure to earn it cult film status in the years to come

The Other Way Around is showing in cinemas from Friday 11 July 2025

Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes (dir. Sam Shahid)

CAST: George Platt Lynes

CREW: Sam Shahid (director, writer, producer), Matthew Kraus (writer, producer, cinematographer), John MacConnell (writer, producer), Nando de Carvalho (producer), Sarah Lynch (composer), Conor McBride (editor)

PLOT: A look at the largely forgotten legacy of celebrity photographer George Platt Lynes, whose private passion for the nude male body formed some of his most daring work…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Enter a world of unrestricted artistic beauty in this eye-opening documentary about one of the most influential gay artists of the 20th century
  • Filmmaker Sam Shahid dives deep into the life and career of George Platt Lynes, with particular attention paid to his then-scandalous portraits of the naked male
  • Through numerous on-screen interviews and archival footage, Shahid crafts a compelling picture of the life that Lynes led in a society where homosexuality could sadly still be a prosecutable offense
  • As you witness the raw passion on display in Lynes’ pictures, the more you realise there was a genuinely captivating artist at work whilst snapping them
  • It’s the perfect starting point for anyone interested in exploring 20th century art that leaned into LGBTQIA+ ideals way ahead of its time

Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes is showing in cinemas from Friday 11 July 2025

What’s Showing At Home This Week?

But when Madea et al head out for the ceremony, she begins to grow suspicious of Zavier’s true intentions…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • Tyler Perry’s most iconic character is back for her thirteenth movie, which takes her and others further than they’ve ever gone before
  • Perry once again multitasks as director, writer and producer, while also playing multiple roles including Madea, her long-suffering nephew Brian, and the cantankerous Uncle Joe
  • Scenes were shot in the Dominican Republic to replicate the luxurious landscapes of the Bahamas, sure to be the scene for plenty of chaos
  • As ever with a Madea movie, expect nothing but madness and wild tonal shifts which have made it an ironic favourite among non-fans of the series
  • Whether you’re on board with Madea or not, you can’t deny that you’ll experience things that you’ve never experienced before with a comedy

Madea’s Destination Wedding is streaming exclusively on Netflix from Friday 11 July 2025

What’s Returning to Cinemas This Week?

Nine Queens (dir. Fabián Bielinsky)

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The modern Argentine classic is making its way back to the big screen for its 25th anniversary, with an all-new 4K restoration overseen by the film’s cinematographer Marcelo Camorino
  • With echoes of The Sting and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, it instantly leaped its way into heist movie history with its unpredictable twists and charismatic characters
  • In addition to winning over critics, it proved to be a major box office hit in Argentina, and even became a modest success internationally as well
  • The film was remade as 2004’s Criminal, with John C. Reilly and Andor’s Diego Luna in the main roles, but despite the involvement of producers George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh, it was such a commercial flop that it didn’t even show in cinemas in Argentina
  • Don’t miss your chance to experience the original classic in the way that it was always meant to be seen: in a darkened auditorium surrounded by equally surprised audience members!

Nine Queens is showing in cinemas from Friday 11 July 2025
