This Week’s Movie Menu (9 – 15 June 2025)

You certainly won’t be “dragon” your feet to the movies this week (apologies for the pun), for among the new releases is an anticipated live-action remake, an unexpected samurai tale, and a spy comedy featuring an undercover improv team…

Movie of the Week

How to Train Your Dragon (dir. Dean DeBlois)

CAST: Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, Murray McArthur

CREW: Dean DeBlois (director, writer, producer), Marc Platt and Adam Siegel (producers), John Powell (composer), Bill Pope (cinematographer), Wyatt Smith (editor)

PLOT: On the secluded island of Berk, where Vikings and dragons have been enemies for centuries, young Hiccup (Thames) – the son of Berk’s chieftain Stoick the Vast (Butler) – unexpectedly befriends a feared Night Fury dragon named Toothless, which leads to a realisation that everything he and his fellow Vikings have known about dragons isn’t entirely true…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • DreamWorks gets in on the live-action remake craze with an all-new take on the animation studio’s beloved 2010 family classic
  • Franchise director and writer Dean DeBlois is overseeing the film’s transition to live-action, ensuring it is as faithful to the original as possible
  • A horde of young talent is playing the adolescent heroes including Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as love interest Astrid, while there are adult roles for Nick Frost, Peter Serafinowicz, and Gerard Butler who reprises his voiceover role as Stoick
  • A blend of dazzling visual effects and striking practical sets recreate every aspect of the original, right down to some of the exact same iconic shots
  • For anyone who’s ever dreamed of seeing their favourite animated film be lovingly replicated by real people and state-of-the-art effects, this will be pure heaven – and with a sequel already in active development, there’s no doubt that DreamWorks is counting on that being the case!

How to Train Your Dragon is showing in cinemas from Monday 9 June 2025

What’s Showing in Cinemas This Week?

Tornado (dir. John Maclean)

CREW: John Maclean (director, writer), Leonora Darby, James Harris and Mark Lane (producers), Jed Kurzel (composer), Robbie Ryan (cinematographer), Selina Macarthur and Ryan Morrison (editors)

PLOT: In 1790 England, a young woman named Tornado (Kōki) is part of a travelling samurai show who finds herself on the run from local criminal Sugarman (Roth) and his violent band of thieves…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • If you somehow had a samurai movie set in the Scottish Highlands on your 2025 bingo card, you can now bask in this thrilling historical thriller that delivers ten-fold on that promise
  • BAFTA-winning filmmaker John Maclean returns for his first feature in ten years, after his well-received debut Western film Slow West
  • Japanese performer Kōki delivers a fierce lead performance as the titular hero, sharing the screen with British thespians like Tim Roth and Jack Lowden
  • There is plenty of gory action to witness, much of it shot with classic samurai movie tricks that are bound to capture the attention of long-time genre fans
  • It may just be the summer’s little film that could, going by the way it pays homage to classic samurai flicks while also doing its own crowd-pleasing thing

Tornado is showing in cinemas from Friday 13 June 2025

Juliet & Romeo (dir. Timothy Scott Bogart)

CAST: Clara Rugaard, Jamie Ward, Jason Isaacs, Dan Fogler, Rebel Wilson, Rupert Everett, Rupert Graves, Derek Jacobi, Tayla Parx, Nicholas Podany, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Iara del Bustio, Martina Ortiz Luis, Alex Grech, Dennis Andres, Ledisi, Max Parker, Zac Bellward

PLOT: In Verona, the generational rivalry between the Montagues and Capulets is disrupted by the unexpected romance between Romeo Montague (Ward) and Juliet Capulet (Rugaard)…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The timeless Shakespeare play about two star-crossed lovers is reimagined as a bright and sparkling new musical for everyone to enjoy
  • Gone are the weight iambic pentameters of the play, here replaced by bouncy and original pop tunes co-written by Grammy-winner Evan Bogart, who’s crafted songs for the likes of Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna among many others
  • Clara Rugaard and Jamie Ward play the tragic lovers of the title, while there’s fiery support from Jason Isaacs, Dan Fogler, Rebel Wilson and Rupert Everett in the many adult roles
  • Expect to tap your feet along to some sprawling musical numbers where they’re plenty of catchy tunes and stunning dance choreography
  • It reinvents the original tale in unexpected ways, so those anticipating a usually glum ending may want to hold off on their predictions until they see it!

Juliet & Romeo is showing in cinemas from Wednesday 11 June 2025

Lollipop (dir. Daisy-May Hudson)

PLOT: After being released from prison, Molly (Sterling) attempts to regain custody of her children, but after reconnecting with her childhood friend Amina (Ahmed), she joins forces with her to take their destinies into their own hands…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • A bright new voice in British independent cinema arrives in the form of writer-director Daisy-May Hudson, who gives this emotional human drama a healthy helping of heart
  • Hudson makes her narrative feature debut after her deeply personal 2015 documentary Half Way, which captured her family’s experiences with homelessness
  • Her film is led by a couple of winning turns from actors Posy Sterling and Idil Ahmed, whose chemistry makes for some of the film’s most emotional moments
  • It tackles heavy themes that might not sit well in the stomachs of some, but are executed with unexpected optimism and authenticity
  • The film’s deeply moving messages will certainly strike a chord with many others who feel as though they’ve been left on the sidelines of society

Lollipop is showing in cinemas from Friday 13 June 2025

Jane Austen Wrecked My Life (dir. Laura Piani)

CAST: Camille Rutherford, Pablo Pauly, Charlie Anson, Annabelle Lengronne, Liz Crowther, Alan Fairbairn, Lola Peploe

CREW: Laura Piani (director, writer), Gabrielle Dumon (producer), Peter Von Poehl (composer), Pierre Mazoyer (cinematographer), Floriane Allier (editor)

PLOT: Agathe (Rutherford), a Parisian woman who dreams of becoming a writer and experiencing love in the style of Jane Austen, is invited to an exclusive Austen-inspired writers’ residency in England, where she finds herself in an unexpected romance…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The long-lasting legacy of Jane Austen is dissected in this amusing multilingual romantic-comedy
  • French lead actor Camille Rutherford, previously seen in the Oscar-winning Anatomy of a Fall, proves herself to be a sprawling and charming romantic lead opposite her own Mr. Darcy, British veteran Charlie Anson
  • It is a sparky original work by writer-director Laura Piani, who takes heavy inspiration from the many works of the legendary author
  • Audiences were highly amused following its world premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, as well as this year’s Santa Barbara International Film Festival where it served as the opening film
  • Austen die-hards will appreciate the numerous references to classic literature, while still being entertained by the story being told here

Jane Austen Wrecked My Life is showing in cinemas from Friday 13 June 2025

Protein (dir. Tony Burke)

PLOT: After returning home to South Wales, former soldier and serial killer Sion (Russell) attempts to escape his demons by obsessively working out at the local gym. However, his deadly appetite returns when he sets his sights on a drug dealer, igniting a dangerous gang war…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This dark Welsh horror introduces a new serial killer to rival the likes of Patrick Bateman and Hannibal Lecter
  • The latter comparison is more than apt, in one of many ways that writer-director Tony Burke spices up his grim narrative
  • Burke adapts his acclaimed 2014 short of the same name, diving much deeper into the disturbed psyche of its anti-hero as well as the far-reaching consequences of his actions
  • It gives a new perspective to the dangerously muscular gym environments that last year’s Love Lies Bleeding memorably went all-out with
  • Genre fans will feel their stomachs gurgling as they witness such devious and violent acts committed on-screen

Protein is showing in cinemas from Friday 13 June 2025

As she further explores the deaf community around her, Sophie begins to have an identity crisis about her own definition of what “deaf” means…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • This touching drama from Hong Kong focuses on the undervalued deaf community and its various bright personalities
  • Filmmaker Adam Wong casts a wide variety of deaf and non-deaf actors in roles told in Hong Kong Sign Language that seek to redefine common perceptions of HOH individuals
  • In addition to being a critical and commercial success in its home country, it also won over audiences at international film festivals, including in London where it had its world premiere

PLOT: In 1984, lowly ice cream truck driver Michael Larson (Hauser) becomes a contestant on the popular game show Press Your Luck, where he surprises everyone by continuously winning record sums of cash prizes, thanks to an intriguing secret that soon becomes a scandal…

FIVE REASONS TO BE EXCITED:

  • The unusual true story of Michael Larson and his history-making television success is retold in this fascinating dramatisation
  • Paul Walter Hauser is eerily convincing in his lead role as Larson, as do the supporting players including Walton Goggins, Maisie Williams and Oscar-nominee David Strathairn

  • Not just a loving recreation of a monumental moment in 20th century television history but also a study of the mysterious man behind the buzzer, this is a film that is far from a Whammy

  • Its heavy focus on the militant era of the Troubles, which was still ongoing at the time of the film’s release, made it an extremely timely film that carries uncomfortable truths to this day
